Book The Reenchantment of Nineteenth Century Fiction

Download or read book The Reenchantment of Nineteenth Century Fiction written by D. Payne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-05-23 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious weave of ideological, literary, and commodity history, The Reenchantment of Nineteenth-Century Fiction shows how Dickens, Thackeray, and George Eliot sacralized Victorian modernity in two contradictory ways: by incarnating their moment as one of transcendent development, and by reenacting bloody rituals from a fading Protestant past. Both the magnitude and the brevity of their success make these works exemplary for our own era, caught between the archaic gods of traditional religion and the still-mysterious ones of market society.

Book Editing Nineteenth Century Fiction

Download or read book Editing Nineteenth Century Fiction written by Jane Millgate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this collection of papers, first presented at the thirteenth annual Conference on Editorial Problems in 1977, focuses on the editing of nineteenth-century fiction. Four of the papers are devoted to single authors – Dickens, Thackeray, Hardy and Zola – while the fifth takes its principle examples from Hawthorne, Twain and Crane. Looking at a range of works from English, American and French literature, this volume demonstrates the number of different attitudes that exist towards the editorial process as well as the different ambitions for the texts that scholars seek to produce. This book will be of interest to those studying and editing nineteenth-century literature.

Book Breeches and Metaphysics

Download or read book Breeches and Metaphysics written by S. S. Prawer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study traces the successive stages of Thackeray's contact with the German world and analyses the discourse he developed as a result. The author is concerned with the fiction and criticism of Thackeray's :Paris Sketch Book"" and the impressions related by the cockney traveller in ""Irish Sketch Book"" and ""Notes of a Journey from Cornhill to Grand Cairo"". Thackeray's own pictorial illustrations of his writings and those by Cruikshank, Doyle and Walker, which he supervised and supplemented, are recognized as an integral part of his German discourse. The study is a chronological one, setting Thackeray's construction of ""German"" and ""the Germans"" against the background of his own development and of the social, industrial, cultural and political history of Britain and its continental neighbours."

Book Behind the News

Download or read book Behind the News written by Sarat Chandran Nair and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overweight, though, in showcasing topical economic issues that excite reader interest in general, Behind the News, On a Journalist’s Radar, spreads out a rich and varied fare the sum and substance of which can’t be defined by a single theme or title. Tersely presented is a pack of incisive reviews of headline-making stuff that come to surface often sparking lively debates right across the spectrum. Behind the News is all the more conspicuous for its venturesome and, indeed, the first ever, attempt to project a personality, magisterial enough to be equated with the tumultuous millennium that has just gone by. Elsewhere, the author picks up signals from the omissions and commissions of a host of law-makers, central bankers and the media to boot. Heroes and hero-worship are alien to the ethos of the financial world but Behind the News spots one in the thick of the 1997 currency crisis. For relief and spicing, fugitive pieces from personal life, career rounds and fictional sources too are keyed in. As for the Indian economy, the book’s main focus, the author pithily notes it had never gained momentum at any point in history, and is unlikely to, given its empire-like structure and organisation. Also due from the author: All in the Shadow of Marx.

Book Reading Thackeray

Download or read book Reading Thackeray written by Michael Lund and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars are aware that serialization was the usual publication format for the Victorian novel, few take into account how this special reading experience affected the meaning of Thackeray's novels for his audience. Thackeray used a number of techniques to encourage his readers to take an active and prolonged part in his installment fiction. Michael Lund's study focuses on the reading of Thackeray's novels and investigates how Victorian understanding of Vanity Fair and Thackeray's other major texts was significantly shaped by the manner in which readers encountered these novels. Situating modern readers in the context of the Victorian audience, particularly within the monthly serial mode, Lund demonstrates in what ways Thackeray made use of his readers' prolonged commitment to his fictional worlds to shape and refine Victorian culture in positive ways.
