Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Medical News, 1906, Vol. 16: A Journal of Medicine, Surgery and Hygiene, Devoted to the Interests of the Medical Profession of Texas and the Southwest The patient, if he passes safely through the strain of the first thirty-six or forty-eight hours, manifests the destructive influence of the venom upon the protoplasm of the blood corpuscles and tis sues, by more or less violent mental symptoms or exhaustion and coma. In many cases, however, where the patient is otherwise strong, he slowly recovers. Individuals weakened by disease, overwork, or insufficient food, which is generally the case with the poor Mexicans, are those in which the prognosis is unfavorable. The poison acts most readily upon warm-blooded animals, especially if injected into a vein, when death is often practically instantaneous, and the season of the year, more toxic, the hotter and the condition and the health of the snake, more so in the hungry. Rattlesnakes, like all snakes of the viperoid family, are born into the world. The mother will give birth, from the middle of July to the middle of August, to from six to twelve baby rattlers, about fourteen inches long, and no thicker than a lead pencil. The baby is self-reliant from birth and is provided with poison and fangs and is capable of self-existence without any assistance from its mother. Dangerous little fellows they are, marked like the adult snakes and provided with a single button at the end of the tail the first link in the series of rattles to be developed ring by ring with each shedding of the skin. All snakes are carnivorous, and, as a rule, take living prey only, a few feed habitually or occasionally on eggs. Many swallow their victims live, others first kill it by smothering it between the coils of their body. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As in Canada, the question of medical reciprocity is far from being on a satisfactory basis, and it will be many years before it is accomplished. The hospitals of Los Angeles are a credit to the medical profession, for, with the exception of the magnificent County Institution for the Poor and the sightly and commodious Sisters' Catholic hospitals, they are nearly all owned and controlled by individuals or companies com posed almost entirely of doctors. The best of them are handsomely furnished with from two to five operating rooms of the most approved character. The poor man or woman has no right to be sick in Los Angeles, for hospital charges range from $15 to $50 per week, and special nurses, if required, $25 per week extra, besides drugs and the physicians' charges. Physicians' fees partake of that characteristic elasticity which estimates the ability of the patient to pay - feeling his pulse means feeling his purse. Day visits, night Visits, office consultation, to and if you come with an introduction from a leading eastern surgeon, the office consultation fee may more likely be Operations are charged for without any unanimity save to obtain all the patient will or can stand. A wealthy man pays $1500 for an ordinary appendectomy, and the same surgeon will operate for another man for $50. Hysterectomies are scaled from $100 to $3000. A moderate charge for a Colles' fracture is while other fractures bring from $100 to $500. The minimum charge for obstetrical cases is As far as possible all the sick are sent to the hospitals, particularly by those physicians fortunate enough to hold stock in some of the paying institutions. The public generally recognize the advantages of good nursing, and trained nurses are in good demand, and are paid $25 and $30 per week. All of the hospitals have training schools con nected with the institution, but the training received in the private hospitals is not as thorough as that secured at the County Hospital. But the nurses in the former acquire a more extended acquaintance with the busiest practitioners which is of great advantage when they are ready for private nursing.
