It may perhaps seem needless to have referred from time to time to the theories of Dr. Van Manen, but two reasons for this may be given: (1) that an attempt has been made to deal with such theories at first hand; (2) that these theories have not only been popularised in Germany during the past year by a certain Pastor Kalthoff, but also in England by J. M. Robertson in Pagan Christs, and by the publications of the Rationalist Press Association. With regard to the second series, it may be well to add that the testimony of St. Paul to the facts and teaching of the Gospels is worked out on lines different from those pursued in the Witness of the Epistles, as it is here considered in relation to each group of the Apostle's letters.
