Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testimony of Reason From the middle of the last century to the present time a great wave of unbelief in the principles of revealed religion has been passing over the minds of some of the most learned men. The dicta of the Scriptures have been ignored by them and nothing believed except it be agree able to natural reason. What are supposed to be the teachings of science have largely dis placed faith. Those who have rejected the doctrines of orthodox Christian churches are not to be regarded with either indifference or pity. N 0 man lives who is a greater lover of truth than the scientist. For further proof about such a place turn to Rev. 19 chap., and 20 verse, and many other places in the Bible. Hellfire, brimstone, and the devils are mentioned. Such tales of love and vice, were distilled into my young mind at home, and in the church as well. Just think, what poor children are taught to believe. No matter how unreasonable the Bible may appear to y, ou you must believe. No matter how impossible the miracles may seem, you must believe. N o matter how cruel the laws your heart must approve of them all. This is what the Church calls liberty of thought. W here is the evidence that Christ was, and is God? Who can. Furnish the evidence that there is a God that made all things from nothing Where is the evidence that the places called Heaven and Hell exist There is none. Where is the evidence that angels, ghosts, devils and gods ex ist? There is none. Have those beings been seen or touched Do any of our senses certify to their existence? No. We now know that Heaven is not just above the clouds, and that Hell is not just below the earth. The telescope has done away with the ancient Heaven, and the revolving world has quenched the flames of the ancient Hell. Those imaginary worlds have disappeared for good. Since I received the new search light of rea son I applied it to the Bible, to see if it would stand inspection on what I was taught by my parents, and by preachers of the Gospel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witness of the World to Christ That there is a widespread feeling prevalent in these days that reason is in some way an tagonistic to revealed truth that the fresh discoveries of modern research, and the better conclusions to which the progress of science has advanced, have cut away the ground on which Christian theology rests - must be known to all who are at all familiar with the currents of modern thought. And there are probably few who do not also know the pain and distress of incertitude that this very assumption causes to most minds, who are unwilling to plunge into the chaos of unbelief which seems the only alter native for those who forsake the sure ground of a divine revelation on which to build their faith, and yet are fearful to rest all their hopes upon a foundation which is so generally assumed to be Visionary and delusive. And in like manner can God, in ten thousand ways unknown to us, make the productions of the press instrumental in gathering for him a vast revenue of glory. And the fact, that God does often put honour upon very humble efl'orts to advance his cause, through the medium of the press, is a very great encouragement to prompt those who feel inclined to try to do something in this way to cast their bread upon the waters. Book Manifold Witness for Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manifold Witness for Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Alfred Barry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manifold Witness for Christ, Vol. 1 It is certain, as a matter of fact, that the Christianity of the mass of men is received by inheritance and teaching, and tested first by practical experience, and then by simple study of the Gospel in itself. I contend not only that this is perfectly reasonable, but that by no other method could Christianity, in accordance with the laws of human nature and experience, hope to assert for itself anything like a universal sway. But when this natural process is chal lenged to justify itself by reason, it appears to me that Christian thought generally passes through the two phases which I have attempted to Sketch in the first and second parts of this volume. I. Christianity obviously presents herself as the chief re presentative of Supernatural Religion', probably the only representative who has any chance of a hearing. The first question which suggests itself to most men on hearing her claim, is the question of the relation in which the Gospel stands to the conclusions and doubts of Natural Religion.' Can it do anything to strengthen the one, and to dispel the other In answer to that question I have endeavoured to Show that here, as in all other cases, the Supernatural is not Preternatural.' Tracing the gradual development in the Bible of the full Christian doctrine, under the pervading idea of Covenant with God, ' I have contended that, in relation to the three fundamental points of religion, the personality of God, the Spirituality of man, and the solution of the mystery of evil, Christianity accords at all points with the main principles of Natural Religion; but at the same time confirms in the calmness of absolute certitude the modest inductions of Natural Theology, and supplements them, when they are silent or speak with stammering tongue.
