Shortly after Miss Bunkley had escaped from St. Joseph's in the manner she has stated in her narrative, the Superior of that convent published a defamatory letter against her. This decided Miss Bunkley not only to defend herself, but also to give an exhibition of convent life, as it had come under her observation, for the information and warning of her American countrymen; and, in coming to this determination, she did not act on her own judgment only, but availed herself of the advice of judicious friends, who believed that it was a sacred duty to the American community and the best interests of society to do so. In accordance with this resolution, she wrote a narrative of what she had seen and heard while in the institution of St. Joseph, and committed the same for revision, with other papers bearing on the subject, to a gentleman in Norfolk, Virginia, the city of her father's residence. "About two years ago, Miss Bunkley, of her own accord, came here and made a spiritual retreat, that is, spent some days in meditation and prayer. She then expressed an ardent desire to become a Sister of Charity--a member of our society. One year after this she again applied by letter to be admitted as a candidate, and was authorised to come here on trial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Early Days: Pages From the Annals of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph's Convent, Mount Carmel Dubuque, Iowa, 1833-1887 In the following pages we attempt to chronicle the heroic achievement of our Founders and our first members, and the not less noble efforts of their worthy and efficient successors, all for the glory of God and the good of souls. Our work will be acceptable we know, and will be a gratification to those who have so eagerly desired this record of the early days. That it has been so long delayed is attributable mainly to the virtue of self-effacement which characterized our revered Foundress of holy memory. The early Annalists faithfully recounted each trial, disappointment, failure and success, but a disastrous fire on May 15, 1849, destroyed these precious records. This, which seemed to be a serious loss, drew only a smile from Mother Clarke, who said: "God knows it all; that should be enough for us." Nor did she encourage a rewriting. Moreover, she positively forbade all mention of certain matters, supernatural favors, which God vouchsafed to grant her; the recital of these we reluctantly withhold. But for the edification of our young members, and to safeguard the traditions of the Institute, we shall try to reproduce some of the lost pages, depending for our information upon the narratives of several of the early companions of our Foundress, documents from our Archives, notes from our Annals, - gathering indeed from all available sources, presenting a compilation rather than an original work.
