Book Rambo and the Dalai Lama

Download or read book Rambo and the Dalai Lama written by Gordon Fellman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-07-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rambo and the Dalai Lama suggests that the assumption that human life is based on conflicts of interest, wars, and the opposition of people to each other and to nature exists as a paradigm that supplies meaning and orientation to the world. An alternative paradigm sees cooperation, caring, nurturing, and loving as equally viable ways of organizing relationships of humans to each other and to nature. Fellman sees this shifting emphasis from adversarialism to mutuality as essential to the survival of our species and nature itself.

Book The Zend Avesta

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Library of Alexandria
  • Release : 1965-01-01
  • ISBN : 1465575324
  • Pages : 2167 pages

Download or read book The Zend Avesta written by and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 1965-01-01 with total page 2167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zend-Avesta is the sacred book of the Parsis, that is to say, of the few remaining followers of that religion which feigned over Persia at the time when the second successor of Mohammed overthrew the Sassanian dynasty, and which has been called Dualism, or Mazdeism, or Magism, or Zoroastrianism, or Fire-worship, according as its main tenet, or its supreme God, or its priests, or its supposed founder, or its apparent object of worship has been most kept in view. In less than a century after their defeat, nearly all the conquered people were brought over to the faith of their new rulers, either by force, or policy, or the attractive power of a simpler form of creed. But many of those who clung to the faith of their fathers, went and sought abroad for a new home, where they might freely worship their old gods, say their old prayers, and perform their old rites. That home they found at last among the tolerant Hindus, on the western coast of India and in the peninsula of Guzerat. There they throve and there they live still, while the ranks of their co-religionists in Persia are daily thinning and dwindling away. As the Parsis are the ruins of a people, so are their sacred books the ruins of a religion. There has been no other great belief in the world that ever left such poor and meagre monuments of its past splendour. Yet great is the value which that small book, the Avesta, and the belief of that scanty people, the Parsis, have in the eyes of the historian and theologist, as they present to us the last reflex of the ideas which prevailed in Iran during the five centuries which preceded and the seven which followed the birth of Christ, a period which gave to the world the Gospels, the Talmud, and the Qur’ân. Persia, it is known, had much influence on each of the movements which produced, or proceeded from, those three books; she lent much to the first heresiarchs, much to the Rabbis, much to Mohammed. By help of the Parsi religion and the Avesta, we are enabled to go back to the very heart of that most momentous period in the history of religious thought, which saw the blending of the Aryan mind with the Semitic, and thus opened the second stage of Aryan thought.

Book Terror Terrorism and the Human Condition

Download or read book Terror Terrorism and the Human Condition written by C. Webel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-05 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to clarify the often murky connections between terrorism, terrorists, and terror. It is designed for the general educated audience interested in recent events, the history leading up to them, and the prospects for dealing with the after effects. Using personal accounts from people who have lived through various forms of terror (survivors of the Dresden fire bombing, Hiroshima, the 9/11 attacks, and others) the book explores terror and its use as a weapon. Providing a unique perspective on terrorism, the book places current events within the broader context necessary to understand how we got here and where we are going.

Book The Mahabharata Volume 3

Download or read book The Mahabharata Volume 3 written by J. A. B. van Buitenen and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahabharata, an ancient and vast Sanskrit poem, is a remarkable collection of epics, legends, romances, theology, and ethical and metaphysical doctrine. The core of this great work is the epic struggle between five heroic brothers, the Pandavas, and their one hundred contentious cousins for rule of the land. This is the third volume of van Buitenen's acclaimed translation of the definitive Poona edition of the text. Book 4, The Book of Virata, begins as a burlesque, but the mood soon darkens amid molestation, raids, and Arjuna's battle with the principal heroes of the enemy. Book 5, The Book of the Effort, relates the attempts of the Pandavas to negotiate the return of their patrimony. They are refused so much as a "pinprick of land," and both parties finally march to battle.

Book Old Norse Mythology

Download or read book Old Norse Mythology written by John Lindow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative and accessible overview of how ancient Scandinavians understood and made use of their mythological stories. Old Norse Mythology provides a unique survey of the mythology of Scandinavia: the gods Þórr (Thor) with his hammer, the wily and duplicitous Óðinn (Odin), the sly Loki, and other fascinating figures. They create the world, battle their enemies, and die at the end of the world, which arises anew with a new generation of gods. These stories were the mythology of the Vikings, but they were not written down until long after the conversion to Christianity, mostly in Iceland. In addition to a broad overview of Nordic myths, the book presents a case study of one myth, which tells of how Þórr (Thor) fished up the World Serpent, analyzing the myth as a sacred text of the Vikings. Old Norse Mythology also explores the debt we owe to medieval intellectuals, who were able to incorporate the old myths into new paradigms that helped the myths to survive when they were no longer part of a religious system. This superb introduction traces the use of the mythology in ideological contexts, from the Viking Age until the twenty-first century, as well as in entertainment.

Book excerpt: "At a time when each Society had its own medium of propogation of its researches ... in the form of Transactions, Proceedings, Journals, etc., a need was strongly felt for bringing out a journal devoted exclusively to the study and advancement of Indian culture in all its aspects. [This] encouraged Jas Burgess to launch the 'Indian antiquary' in 1872. The scope ... was in his own words 'as wide as possible' incorporating manners and customs, arts, mythology, feasts, festivals and rites, antiquities and the history of India ... Another laudable aim was to present the readers abstracts of the most recent researches of scholars in India and the West ... 'Indian antiquary' also dealt with local legends, folklore, proverbs, etc. In short 'Indian antiquary' was ... entirely devoted to the study of MAN - the Indian - in all spheres ..."--Introduction to facsimile volumes, published 1985
