Book excerpt: An examination of sex and the Bible by one of the leading biblical scholars in the United States. For several decades, Michael Coogan's introductory course on the Old Testament has been a perennial favorite among students at Harvard University. In God and Sex, Coogan examines one of the most controversial aspects of the Hebrew Scripture: What the Old Testament really says about sex, and how contemporary understanding of those writings is frequently misunderstood or misrepresented. In the engaging and witty voice generations of students have appreciated, Coogan explores the language and social world of the Bible, showing how much innuendo and euphemism is at play, and illuminating the sexuality of biblical figures as well as God. By doing so, Coogan reveals the immense gap between popular use of Scripture and its original context. God and Sex is certain to provoke, entertain, and enlighten readers.

Book excerpt: "Complete bible - old and new testaments The prime objective in producing this new edition of the scriptures was a desire to accurately represent the most sacred names of our Father and His Son. The personal name of the Heavenly Father, Yahweh, was inspired into the Hebrew and Aramaic texts of the Old Testament nearly 7000 times. This includes 134 instances where the Masoretic scribes admittedly changed Yahweh to the more common Hebrew Adonai. In all instances where LORD, or GOD was substituted for the Sacred Name in the English text we have properly restored Yahweh. It was also our goal to restore the Hebrew name of our savior Yahshua into the text."

Book Hey God What Went Wrong and When Are You Going to Fix It

Download or read book Hey God What Went Wrong and When Are You Going to Fix It written by Samuel D. G. Heath and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded an American Legion Scholarship I am also an award winning author and have published numerous articles and books. Having attended several colleges and universities eventually earning my Ph. D. in Human Behavior I hold several life credentials in education earned during many years as an educator together with years spent working in the Aerospace Industry and other occupations. But to call Einstein's famous equation E=MC2 incomplete because it does not account for life and death does seem quite extraordinary, yet these remain the two greatest mysteries they have ever been denying us thus far a "theory of everything." The title of this book: "Hey, God! What went wrong and when are You going to fix it?" is a perfectly legitimate question and one that often comes to the minds of most of us. We know something animates life and departs with death, but what this "something" is not all our science has yet discovered, though things like the Large Hadron Collider may provide needed insight, and it has been in the pursuit of knowledge about these two greatest mysteries that has compelled me into so many varied academic studies and careers attempting to make sense of the world and our place in it and how people think and deal with the issues of life and death philosophically, religiously, and politically. The things I have discovered along the way compelled me to much research and speculation about these mysteries and how they impact our lives, to communicate my thoughts about them to others. But there are many things, some of them terribly wrong which we wish God would intervene and set right and question why He does not. Some years ago I removed from the greater part of society to live in semi-seclusion alone with my books and thoughts in a quiet part of the Sequoia National Forest devoting myself to contemplation, speculating about many things and committing my thoughts in writing fulltime. As a writer and author given to much introspection and fascinated by human behavior, nature, and our universe it was important to me to simplify my life as much as possible as anyone given to philosophical speculation about many things must. That much of my writing covers some metaphysical thoughts about God, angels and demons, an afterlife and Biblical stories of origins, of prophecies of the End Times and so much more have been absorbing studies as well and I freely share my thoughts about these in this volume.

Book Walking with Faith

  • Author : Walter J. Woods
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2010-02-01
  • ISBN : 1608992853
  • Pages : 545 pages

Download or read book Walking with Faith written by Walter J. Woods and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walking with Faith addresses a long-standing need to develop the faith-related dimensions of Christian moral life and explore their implications. It responds to Vatican II's exhortation that theological studies be renewed through a lively contact with the mystery of Christ and the history of salvation. Accordingly, this book examines the relationship between faith and moral life in the Scriptures and acknowledges the normative quality of the biblical texts. It reviews the long experience of the Church, paying special attention to history, worship, and intellectual currents. These dimensions of Christian life show the relationship between faith and moral life at any given time and allow the actions of one generation to have effects that extend far into the future. Walking with Faith promotes an understanding of contemporary pastoral and theological issues and encourages a deep and informed approach to Christian life.

Book God s Kingdom through God s Covenants

Download or read book God s Kingdom through God s Covenants written by Peter J. Gentry and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible records a number of covenants that God made with his people. However, rather than merely abstract ideas for theologians and scholars to study, the covenants in Scripture hold the key to understanding the Bible’s overarching story and message. In God’s Kingdom through God’s Covenants, two world-class scholars offer readers an engaging snapshot of how God has chosen to lovingly relate to his people in history, tracing the significance of the concept of “covenant” through both the Old and New Testaments. Explaining the differences between covenant theology and dispensationalism while offering a thoughtful alternative to both, this book ultimately highlights the covenantal framework through which God has promised to remain faithful to his people.
