Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader. The Ten Spring Woods is in fact a real place, located within the City of Saratoga Springs N.Y. It was with unspeakable pleasure that the author, with his friends, played in that beautiful woodland as a young child nearly eighty years ago. Today, the Ten Spring Woods is but a shadow of its former self, due to the relentless pressures of home building and other human activities. Today it might be difficult to find those ten pure bubbling springs. However, fortunately, a small 15 acre tract of the Woods has been set aside for protection and conservation today. A legend engraved in 1793 on a water pitcher, belonging to the author's family, says it all: "Come to the living waters, come. Sinners obey your makers call. Oh, come ye weary wanderers home, and find his grace is free for all."

Book The L M Montgomery Reader

Download or read book The L M Montgomery Reader written by Benjamin Lefebvre and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The L.M. Montgomery Reader assembles significant rediscovered primary material on one of Canada's most enduringly popular authors throughout her high-profile career and after her death. Each of its three volumes gathers pieces published all over the world to set the stage for a much-needed reassessment of Montgomery's literary reputation. Much of the material is freshly unearthed from archives and digital collections and has never before been published in book form. The selections appearing in this first volume focus on Montgomery's role as a public celebrity and author of the resoundingly successful Anne of Green Gables (1908). They give a strong impression of her as a writer and cultural critic as she discusses a range of topics with wit, wisdom, and humour, including the natural landscape of Prince Edward Island, her wide readership, anxieties about modernity, and the continued relevance of “old ideals.” These essays and interviews, joined by a number of additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature, make up nearly one hundred selections in all. Each volume is accompanied by an extensive introduction and detailed commentary by leading Montgomery scholar Benjamin Lefebvre that trace the interplay between the author and the critic, as well as between the private and the public Montgomery. This volume – and the Reader as a whole – adds tremendously to our understanding and appreciation of Montgomery's legacy as a Canadian author and as a literary celebrity both during and beyond her lifetime.

Book excerpt: A former soldier who’s been unwittingly living another man’s life is given the chance to turn back the clock Anton Blum is the strongest man in Konigswald. But the German peasant is mute; he hasn’t spoken a word since he was wounded in action nearly a decade earlier. On a stormy night, he is recruited by British officers to help remove a tree that has fallen across the road. A flash of lightning strikes, and Anton is struck in the head by a branch. He opens his eyes and addresses one of the officers in English, calling him a nickname he couldn’t possibly know. The truth is even more extraordinary: Anton isn’t actually Anton, but a long-missing English soldier. Lookalike cousins Jack and Jim Laydon were presumed to have perished in a raid during the war. Cotterell Laydon, the present owner of Laydon Manor, is stunned to discover that one of his grandsons might be alive. But is he Jack or Jim? Now the long-lost Laydon must prove his identity before he can lay claim to the ancestral estate—and the wife who sees him as a complete stranger. Is it possible he isn’t a Laydon at all?
