The actions of the post-communist mafia state model are closely aligned with the interests of power and wealth concentrated in the hands of a small group of insiders. While the traditional mafia channeled wealth and economic players into its spheres of influence by means of direct coercion, the mafia state does the same by means of parliamentary legislation, legal prosecution, tax authority, police forces and secret service. An increasing number of community leaders have become aware of this defect and have sought to remedy it through courses on the techniques of Communism. Certain colleges and universities have introduced such courses into the curriculum. The National Education Association, at its 1952 convention, recommended moves in the same direction by suggesting the study of Communism in the schools. The Senate Sub-Committee on Internal Security, in its July 1953 report on education, strongly recommends the necessity of classes for teachers and students in high schools and colleges, conducted by those effective in combating Communism. An adequate textbook will make possible a dynamic study of Communism in our schools and in community groups. It will give an impetus to the wider introduction of this subject into colleges and civic organizations which have lacked the material for organizing such courses. The fact that a handbook or textbook of this character was not prepared in the past is one of the chief explanations for the slow progress so far. The present book, designed to answer this need, is an analytical and critical study of Communism. It deals with Communist ideology, strategy, and ‘movement’ as presented by the Marxist-Leninist classics themselves and by current Communist documents and directives. It examines the relationship of the directives given by the Kremlin to the basic works of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin. It considers these books and documents as the Communist himself studies and uses them. It analyzes Communist activities as the Communist is instructed to carry them out. This is the competent manner in which the techniques of Communism can be mastered in order to defeat them.

Book excerpt: The political system established by the Chinese Communist Party in 1949 had its origins, in many respects, in the Chinese Soviet Republic of 1931–1934, based in southern Kiangsi province about 400 miles southwest of Shanghai. The Kiangsi period was important because it gave the Chinese Communists their first opportunity to govern an extensive area and a large population, and in so doing to develop methods of mass mobilization as well as new techniques for conducting party and government affairs. Kim explores the evolution of the Chinese Communist movement during the Kiangsi soviet period, especially its organizational concepts, behavioral patterns, and development techniques of "mass line" politics. He seeks answers to several questions: What notions of organization shaped the Kiangsi political system? Who formulated the policies? How were they implemented at the rice-roots level of government? Asked if he believed the lawsuit was an effort by the Chinese government to stop the publication of his book, Mr. Hamilton said: “I have no evidence of that, although it should be noted that the Chinese government has used lawfare in the past.” Lawfare is the use of legal action as part of a campaign against a target. Governments around the world are in the early stages of a repositioning of power, as China rises and the United States is drawn into direct competition. However, some are beginning to wonder whether, for all of the economic benefits, engaging with China carries unseen dangers. The Chinese Communist Party is now determined to reshape the world in its image. The party is not interested in democracy. It divides the world into those who can be won over and enemies. They have already lured many leaders to their corner; others are weighing up a devil's bargain. Through its exercise of ‘sharp power,’ the party is weakening global institutions, aggressively targeting individual corporations, and threatening freedom of expression from the arts to academia. At the same time, security services are increasingly worried about incursions into our communications infrastructure. Indeed, the vaunted Great Firewall is a temporary measure, only necessary until the party has transformed the global conversation.
