Download or read book Mr G s Battle Cry La Causa De La Raza Wants You written by Javier Gomez and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wave of revolution swept across the United States in the sixties and the seventies. And across California, Cesar Chavez sparked the Chicano civil rights movement in the barrio, giving prominence to new leaders, new voices, and new demands for freedom from injustice and oppression. For young Javier Gomez, this battle cry would be the beginning of a fight to stand up to injustice in his home of East LA. In Mr. Gs Battle Cry!, author and civil rights activist Javier Gomez chronicles his march into the streets of East LA and beyond as he and his Chicano and Chicana brothers and sisters take up the cause of the civil rights movement and create hope for a better futureagainst great odds. Gomez also explores the history of his people, showing how their culture and their spirit was renewed during this historic era of equality and justice. Javier Gomez was inspired by the Chicano civil rights movement, and today his battle cry endures. Mr. Gs Battle Cry! gives voice to the enlightened individuals who fought, side by side, at protests, and in the streets, against the institutions of injustice that sought to keep the people silent. And today, this cultural revolution has left a living legacy of change, progress, and hope.
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Latin American Theater written by Eladio Cortes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-12-30 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American culture has given birth to numerous dramatic works, though it has often been difficult to locate information about these plays and playwrights. This volume traces the history of Latin American theater, including the Nuyorican and Chicano theaters of the United States, and surveys its history from the pre-Columbian period to the present. Sections cover individual Latin American countries. Each section features alphabetically arranged entries for playwrights, independent theaters, and cultural movements. The volume begins with an overview of the development of theater in Latin America. Each of the country sections begins with an introductory survey and concludes with copious bibliographical information. The entries for playwrights provide factual information about the dramatist's life and works and place the author within the larger context of international literature. Each entry closes with a list of works by and about the playwright. A selected, general bibliography appears at the end of the volume.
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Theatre of the Oppressed written by Kelly Howe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dynamic book offers a comprehensive companion to the theory and practice of Theatre of the Oppressed. Developed by Brazilian director and theorist Augusto Boal, these theatrical forms invite people to mobilize their knowledge and rehearse struggles against oppression. Featuring a diverse array of voices (many of them as yet unheard in the academic world), the book hosts dialogues on the following questions, among others: Why and how did Theatre of the Oppressed develop? What are the differences between the 1970s (when Theatre of the Oppressed began) and today? How has Theatre of the Oppressed been shaped by local and global shifts of the last 40-plus years? Why has Theatre of the Oppressed spread or "multiplied" across so many geographic, national, and cultural borders? How has Theatre of the Oppressed been shaped by globalization, "development," and neoliberalism? What are the stakes, challenges, and possibilities of Theatre of the Oppressed today? How can Theatre of the Oppressed balance practical analysis of what is with ambitious insistence on what could be? How can Theatre of the Oppressed hope, but concretely? Broad in scope yet rich in detail, The Routledge Companion to Theatre of the Oppressed contains practical and critical content relevant to artists, activists, teachers, students, and researchers.
Download or read book Guillermo Calles written by Rogelio Agrasánchez, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912, Guillermo Calles (1893-1958) became the first Mexican actor to appear in films made in California. Despite limited resources, he began directing and producing his own movies, and in 1929 pioneered production of Spanish-language sound films. His major works, among them the long-unavailable El indio yaqui and Raza de bronce (both 1927), represented Calles' tireless crusade to restore the image of Mexicans and Indians in an era dominated by Hollywood stereotypes. This biography traces Calles' career from his earliest Hollywood days through the 1950s. Included are the only surviving images of the filmmaker's silent productions, a closing commentary on his intimate circle of relatives, and an appendix featuring two fascinating letters written by Calles during a filming trip.
