Book The Shame that Lingers

Download or read book The Shame that Lingers written by A. Denise Starkey and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Shame That Lingers: A Survivor-Centered Critique of Catholic Sin-Talk, A. Denise Starkey argues that the dominant legal model of sin in the Catholic Church is inadequate for hearing the experience of sin for survivors of childhood and domestic violence because it functions to shame rather than to heal. A universal understanding of the sinner, as found in mainstream Catholic sin-talk and confession, impedes human flourishing by silencing radical suffering in ways that make survivors complicit for the harm done to them. Starkey argues that a shame-free theology of sin is necessary if survivors are to encounter the profound love of God. Understanding sin from the perspective of the sinned-against makes possible a transformative solidarity with the other by reinvisioning the roles of speaker and listener.

But with an ex-wife determined to keep him from his daughter and a pile of regrets from a failed marriage, can he really dive into something new without it blowing up? Grace is stuck on the fact that Brent is an older man, their age gap and her trust issues clouding her deepening attraction. And though Brent is caught in Grace’s gravitational pull, his insecurities and a bitter custody battle might be all it takes to tear them apart. Can their unexpected bond survive while shadows of the past linger? Everything That Lingers is a reverse gumpy/sunshine romance that’s perfect for fans of Lucy Score and Mariana Zapata. Expect plenty of endearing clumsiness, heated glances by the pool, and an emotional story that will leave you cheering for love. TW for abuse (not depicted; talked about in one scene).

Book excerpt: From Sharon and Tom Curtis, one of the most celebrated writing duos in romance, comes a sizzling story of unexpected attraction—as sparks fly between a shy librarian and a sexy dancer. Philip Brooks is a man with a passion for biology, wildlife, and restoring his old family home—all of which add up to a pile of bills that require attention. Moonlighting as the Cougar Club’s hottest dancer is a job, nothing more, nothing less—until lovely Jennifer Hamilton nearly faints during one of his shows. Her sweet innocence tugs at his heart and makes him painfully aware of his longing for the kind of love a woman as perfect and real as Jennifer can offer. Watching her most secret fantasy come to life on the dance floor is almost more than Jennifer can bear. Now, the sexiest man she’s ever met is near enough to hold. Book On Lingering and Literature

Download or read book On Lingering and Literature written by Harold Schweizer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lingering and its decried equivalents, such as dawdling, idling, loafing, or lolling about, are both shunned and coveted in our culture where time is money and where there is never quite enough of either. Is lingering lazy? Is it childish? Boring? Do poets linger? (Is that why poetry is boring?) Is it therapeutic? Should we linger more? Less? What happens when we linger? Harold Schweizer here examines an experience of time that, though common, usually passes unnoticed. Drawing on a wide range of philosophic and literary texts and examples, On Lingering and Literature exemplifies in its style and accessible argumentation the new genre of post-criticism, and aims to reward anyone interested in slow reading, daydreaming, or resisting our culture of speed and consumption.

Book Lingering Bilingualism

Download or read book Lingering Bilingualism written by Naomi Brenner and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a famous comment made by the poet Chayim Nachman Bialik, Hebrew—the language of the Jewish religious and intellectual tradition—and Yiddish—the East European Jewish vernacular—were “a match made in heaven that cannot be separated.” That marriage, so the story goes, collapsed in the years immediately preceding and following World War I. But did the “exes” really go their separate ways? Lingering Bilingualism argues that the interwar period represents not an endpoint but rather a new phase in Hebrew-Yiddish linguistic and literary contact. Though the literatures followed different geographic and ideological paths, their writers and readers continued to interact in places like Berlin, Tel Aviv, and New York—and imagined new paradigms for cultural production in Jewish languages. Brenner traces a shift from traditional bilingualism to a new translingualism in response to profound changes in Jewish life and culture. By foregrounding questions of language, she examines both the unique literary-linguistic circumstances of Ashkenazi Jewish writing and the multilingualism that can lurk within national literary canons.
