Book The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States Classic Reprint written by Cajori and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States The paper used in the book is thick, the type large. Words and phrases to which the author desires to call special attention are printed in italic characters, and as more than half the book is, in the author's eyes, important, more than half the book is printed in italics. In 1788, when Nicholas Pike published his arithmetic, Greenwood's book was entirely unknown, and Pike's was believed to be the first arith metic written and printed in America. The first arithmetic which enjoyed general popularity and reached an extended circulation in the colonies was the School-master's Assistant, by Thomas Dilworth. The first edition of this was published in London in 1744 or '45. According to Wickersham, there appeared a reprint of this in Philadelphia in 1769. Other American editions were brought out at Hartford in 1786, New York in 1793 and 1806, Brooklyn in 1807. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Elementary Mathematics: With Hints on Methods of Teaching In the preparation of this history, I have made extensive use of the works of Cantor, Hankel, Unger, De Morgan, Pea cock, Gow, Allman, Loria, and of other prominent writers On the history of mathematics. Original sources have been consulted, whenever opportunity has presented itself. It gives me much pleasure to acknowledge the assistance ren dered by the United States Bureau of Education, in. For warding for examination a number of old text-books which otherwise would have been inaccessible to me. It should also be said that a large number of passages in this book are taken, with only slight alteration, from my History of Mathematics, Macmillan co., 1895. Some parts of the present work are, therefore, not independent of the earlier one. It has been my privilege to have my manuscript read by two scholars of well-known ability, - Dr. G. B. Halsted of the University of Texas, and Professor F. H. Loud of Colorado College. Through their suggestions and corrections many infelicities in language and several inaccuracies of statement have disappeared. Valuable assistance in proof-reading has been rendered by Professor Loud, by Mr. P. E. Doudna, formerly Fellow in Mathematics at the University of Wis consin, and by Mr. F. K. Bailey, a student in Colorado College. I extend to them my sincere thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Mathematics Perhaps no subject is so directly in the flux of the instability of things as mathematics. For cen turies this subject has held the unenviable reputa tion of being tortuous; yet man, because of his un ending need of the subject, has endured silently. It has been one of the necessary evils of life, yet, did man but know it, wonderfully full of beauty in its symmetry and exactness. Indispensible to the man who builds, to the man who barters, to the man who meditates, it has ever been shrouded with a mantle of mysticism. One might say with truth that they who have the greatest need of the find ings of mathematical investigation have the smallest Opportunity to acquire a knowledge of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Mathematical Education Including the Teaching of Arithmetic This study is based upon twenty years' experience Of school and college education ranging through all grades, including the very elements of counting and form in the kindergarten, the mathematics appropriate to the school, and the standard required Of students for an Honours Degree in our universities. Conclusions based on class-teaching and those arrived at by experiment and by a private study Of the individual have served both to correct and to supplement each other. The substance of the present volume has also formed the introductory part Of a course of lectures on the teaching of mathematics, which, for many years, I have given in various institutions to classes of teachers from almost all types and grades Of schools, elementary as well as secondary and tertiary. Book A Concise History of Mathematics

Download or read book A Concise History of Mathematics written by Dirk J. Struik and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compact, well-written history — first published in 1948, and now in its fourth revised edition — describes the main trends in the development of all fields of mathematics from the first available records to the middle of the 20th century. Students, researchers, historians, specialists — in short, everyone with an interest in mathematics — will find it engrossing and stimulating. Beginning with the ancient Near East, the author traces the ideas and techniques developed in Egypt, Babylonia, China, and Arabia, looking into such manuscripts as the Egyptian Papyrus Rhind, the Ten Classics of China, and the Siddhantas of India. He considers Greek and Roman developments from their beginnings in Ionian rationalism to the fall of Constantinople; covers medieval European ideas and Renaissance trends; analyzes 17th- and 18th-century contributions; and offers an illuminating exposition of 19th century concepts. Every important figure in mathematical history is dealt with — Euclid, Archimedes, Diophantus, Omar Khayyam, Boethius, Fermat, Pascal, Newton, Leibniz, Fourier, Gauss, Riemann, Cantor, and many others. For this latest edition, Dr. Struik has both revised and updated the existing text, and also added a new chapter on the mathematics of the first half of the 20th century. Concise coverage is given to set theory, the influence of relativity and quantum theory, tensor calculus, the Lebesgue integral, the calculus of variations, and other important ideas and concepts. The book concludes with the beginnings of the computer era and the seminal work of von Neumann, Turing, Wiener, and others. "The author's ability as a first-class historian as well as an able mathematician has enabled him to produce a work which is unquestionably one of the best." — Nature Magazine.

Book excerpt: "This textbook grew out of the conviction that both prospective school teachers of mathematics and prospective college teachers of mathematics need a background in history to teach the subject more effectively. It is therefore designed for junior or senior mathematics majors who intend to teach in college or high school, and it concentrates on the history of those topics typically covered in an undergraduate curriculum or in elementary or high school. Because the history of any given mathematical topic often provides excellent ideas for teaching the topic, there is sufficient detail in each explanation of a new concept for the future (or present) teacher of mathematics to develop a classroom lesson or series of lessons based on history. In fact, many of the problems ask readers to develop a particular lesson. My hope is that students and prospective teachers will gain from this book a knowledge of how we got here from there, a knowledge that will provide a deeper understanding of many of the important concepts of mathematics"--

Book Mathematical Teaching

Download or read book Mathematical Teaching written by Truman Henry Safford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematical Teaching: And Its Modern Methods The history of mathematical teaching in this country is yet to be written. It is necessary to pay some attention to this history in writing upon the theory; as the traditions of the elders have a great influence, partly good and partly injurious. If we find that a tradition in mathematical teaching arose from definite reasons still in force, we must be cautious about rejecting it as useless; but such are not all the methods which have been handed down. A few salient points of history may be useful to consider. About 1730 the Hollis professorship of mathematics and natural philosophy was founded at Harvard College; it goes back near enough to Newton's time to enable us to see the impulse which caused its establishment. Again, the successors of Winthrop, the first Hollis professor, taught by English methods and essentially English books, including Playfair's Euclid, till long after the Revolution. Webber's Mathematics, compiled from Hutton and the other English writers, and Hutton's own books, were the standard for many years. It was the military experience of the Revolution which led to the employment of French and Swiss professors in West Point Academy; and its reorganization under Thayer, shortly after the War of 1812, led to the production by Davies, Church, and Bartlett, of a series of text-books compiled from Lacroix, Legendre, and other writers of the same nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Mathematics in Secondary Schools In addition to the purely pedagogical discussions, this' volume contains certain topics in pure mathematics which, on account of their bearing upon teaching, should be familiar to every teacher. These topics re late principally to the modes of attack (chapter XV), but also to the foundations of mathematics (chapter V), to the division of the circle (chapter XVI), and to a few other subjects. These chapters may be omitted when a rapid survey of the purely pedagogic matters is desired. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
