Download or read book Medical Insects and Arachnids written by R.P. Lane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprising though it seems, the world faces almost as great a threat today from arthropod-borne diseases as it did in the heady days of the 1950s when global eradication of such diseases by eliminating their vectors with synthetic insecticides, particularly DDT, seemed a real possibility. Malaria, for example, still causes tremendous morbidity and mortality throughout the world, especially in Africa. Knowledge of the biology of insect and arachnid disease vectors is arguably more important now than it has ever been. Biological research directed at the development of better methods of control becomes even more important in the light of the partial failure of many control schemes that are based on insecticide- although not all is gloom, since basic biological studies have contributed enormously to the outstanding success of international control programmes such as the vast Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. It is a sine qua non for proper understanding of the epidemiology and successful vector control of any human disease transmitted by an arthropod that all concerned with the problem - medical entomologist, parasitologist, field technician - have a good basic understanding of the arthropod's biology. Knowledge will be needed not only of its direct relationship to any parasite or pathogen that it transmits but also of its structure, its life history and its behaviour - in short, its natural history. Above all, it will be necessary to be sure that it is correctly identified.

Download or read book Medical Entomology written by B.F. Eldridge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed primarily as a textbook for graduate and postgraduate courses in Medical, Public Health and Veterinary Entomology. Its uniqueness is that its emphasis is on disease as opposed to arthropods. It includes general discussions of epidemiology, transmission, disease control, vector control and disease surveillance. In addition, it contains chapters oriented towards the many specific arthropod-borne diseases. Furthermore, the book discusses the many direct impacts that parasitic insects have on human and animal health. The arthropods themselves are dealt with in two introductory chapters.
Download or read book The Flat Footed Flies written by Peter J. Chandler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Flat-footed Flies (Diptera: Opetiidae and Platypezidae) of Europe" presents a detailed account of the taxonomy, biology and distribution of the 44 European species of Opetiidae and Platypezidae. Two of these are here described as new to science. Known larvae develop in the larger fungi; adults are honey-dew feeders on broad leaves. Both families are characterised and proposals on their relationships and phylogeny are discussed. All European species are keyed and described in detail. Adult and larval biology are reviewed. The provincial distribution of 35 species occurring in Fennoscandia and Denmark is listed in a detailed catalogue. The work presents identification keys to genera and species and for each species descriptions and accounts of its nomenclature, biology and distribution. Known early stages are keyed to genera and described under each species. Altogether 427 line drawings and 6 beautiful colour illustrations accompany the text.
Download or read book Estimation of the Time Since Death written by Jarvis Hayman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimation of the Time Since Death is a current comprehensive work on the methods and research advances into the time since death and human decomposition. This work provides practitioners a starting point for research and practice to assist with the identification and analysis of human remains. It contains a collection of the latest scientific research, various estimation methods, and includes case studies, to highlight methodological application to real cases. This reference first provides an introduction, including the early post-mortem period, biochemical methods, and the value of entomology in estimating the time since death, along with other factors affecting the decomposition process. Further coverage explores importance of microbial communities in estimating time since death. Separate chapters on aquatic environments, carbon 14 dating and amino acid racemization, and total body scoring will round out the reference. A concluding chapter summarizes research and outline the direction it should follow. Chapters are written by practicing physical anthropologists and also include their latest research on the topics, as well as, relevant case studies. Estimation of the Estimation of the Time Since Death Current Research and Future Trends is a one of a kind resource for those involved in determining the time since death in decomposing human remains. The first comprehensive reference bringing together all aspects of knowledge relating to the estimation of the post-mortem interval in decomposed human bodies Contains real case studies to underscore key estimation concepts Demonstrates the changing role of technology and advances in the estimation of time since death

Download or read book From Venus to Antarctic written by John Dunmore and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-11-07 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High adventure, drama, discovery, science and map making. This is the first-ever full-length English language biography of D'Urville - one of the nineteenth century's great explorers. Bad-tempered and irreverent, D'Urville was loved by his men but hated by his superiors. He didn't care either way. His passion for science drove him forward as he explored the Pacific - from Guam to Antarctica and from New Guinea to Chile, collecting a vast number of natural history specimens and recording extensive hydrographical information. Hobart was frequently a base and D'Urville is credited with making the single greatest contribution to perfecting the map of the Pacific. He was not consumed with French colonial arrogance, often preferring the societies he visited to his own. He was however given the prestigious French Legion of Honour. He is often remembered for arranging the purchase of the famous statue Venus De Milo (whose arms were broken off in the battle to get her to Paris). His life ended in a railway accident in 1842.
Download or read book Bovine Trypanosomosis in Tsetse Free Adamawa Plateau of Cameroon written by Mamoudou Abdoulmoumini and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bovine trypanosomosis remains an important cattle disease in the major cattle rearing Adamawa plateau of Cameroon. The Adamawa plateau harbors huge tsetse infested foci that are trypanosomosis endemic as well as some tsetse free belts (example in Ngaoundere), some of which are trypanosomosis hypoendemic. The major question is that what are the vectors transmitting trypanosomosis in the absence of tsetse in Ngaoundere? we conducted a parasitological, molecular and entomological survey at the abattoir and pasture areas to answer this key epidemiological question. Our parasitological survey at the abattoir resulted in the identification of Trypanosoma congolense, Trypanosoma brucei brucei and Trypanosoma vivax with highest infection prevalence recorded in cattle from the tsetse infested Mayo Rey division than in those from Vina Division. Regarding the molecular test results we identified Trypanosoma vivax, Trypanosoma Theileri, and Trypanosoma evansi in tabanids and Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma theileri in cattle. The present findings indicates the important role of tabanids in the epizootiology of bovine trypanosomosis in the tsetse free zone of Ngaoundere. We recommend that tabanids should be included in the ongoing fly control operations in the Adamawa plateau.
