Book African American Theater Buildings

Download or read book African American Theater Buildings written by Eric Ledell Smith and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American theater buildings were theaters owned or managed by blacks or whites and serving an African American audience. Nearly 2,000 such theaters, including nickelodeons, vaudeville houses, storefronts, drive-ins, opera houses and neighborhood movie theaters, existed in the 20th century, yet very little has been written about them. In this book the African American theater buildings from 1900 through 1955 are arranged by state, then by city, and then alphabetically under the name by which they were known. The street address, dates of operation, number of seats, architect, whether it was a member of TOBA (Theater Owners Booking Association), type of theater (nickelodeon, vaudeville, musical, drama or picture), alternate name(s), race and name of manager or owner, whether the audience was mixed, and the fate of the theater are given where known. Commentary by theater historians is also provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Sampson Noll, a desperate run-away slave who hit his master over the head with a wagon stave have in common with Charlotte Preston, a young woman, who was in the first graduating class at Northern State Normal School? The first part of the answer is that both of these individuals lived in a region known as the U.P., the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The second part is that both these individuals were Americans of African descent. What would bring Mr. Noll, Ms. Preston, and other individuals of African descent to an isolated area of the United States where winter snowfalls can reach 200 inches and temperatures can be so cold that they can cause fog to freeze? Can you imagine entering an unfamiliar isolated region during a May passage riding in a steamboat across the choppy waters of the Straits of Mackinac to get to the land mass known as the Upper Peninsula? And once you managed to cross into this region of the United States, enduring early spring to falls end, you now have to deal with mosquitoes, no-see-ums,deer flies, stable flies, black flies, wood ticks, and deer ticks. As the months progress, you have to face bitter cold winters with no kinship support(unless your family came with you) to comfort you, and with only your hopes, dreams, and self reliance to sustain you. A variety of individuals of African descent did just that and settled in the Upper Peninsula. Coming from a perspective of the main opportunities that drew most people to the area, this book discusses people from their areas of interest and employment: lumber, mining, hunting, fishing, education, and sports. In the end, the book reveals what these individuals have inspired by their incredible tenacity.

Book excerpt: "This book tells the story of American education by examining this unique element of student life. The author shows the evolution of how teachers, students, parents, and administrators responded to report cards. Report cards, he shows, were more than just a means by which a school documented each student's deportment, academic standing, and attendance. They were a tool of control, a microcosm for the changing power dynamics between teachers, parents, and students"--

Book Modernism and Modernity in British Women s Magazines

Download or read book Modernism and Modernity in British Women s Magazines written by Alice Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores responses to the strangeness and pleasures of modernism and modernity in four commercial British women’s magazines of the interwar period. Through extensive study of interwar Vogue (UK), Eve, Good Housekeeping (UK), and Harper’s Bazaar (UK), Wood uncovers how modernism was received and disseminated by these fashion and domestic periodicals and recovers experimental journalism and fiction within them by an array of canonical and marginalized writers, including Storm Jameson, Rose Macaulay, Gertrude Stein, and Virginia Woolf. The book’s analysis is attentive to text and image and to interactions between editorial, feature, and advertising material. Its detailed survey of these largely neglected magazines reveals how they situated radical aesthetics in relation to modernity’s broader new challenges, diversions, and opportunities for women, and how they approached high modernist art and literature through discourses of fashion and celebrity. Modernism and Modernity in British Women’s Magazines extends recent research into modernism’s circulation through diverse markets and publication outlets and adds to the substantial body of scholarship concerned with the relationship between modernism and popular culture. It demonstrates that commercial women’s magazines subversively disrupted and sustained contemporary hierarchies of high and low culture as well as actively participating in the construction of modernism’s public profile.
