Download or read book The Tatler Vol 1 4 written by Joseph Addison and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 1435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tatler is the iconic literary and society journal founded in 1709. It was issued three times a week for two years and aimed to inform its readers about the latest trends and events in social life. To make sure the editors are aware of all the news in society, they sent their secret reporters to the four most famous coffee houses of the time. Those were White's, Will's, Grecian Coffee House, St. James's Coffee House. The stories were written and edited by Richard Steel, who worked under the pseudonym, Isaac Bickerstaff. Yet later, this name was coverage for other contributors like the famous writer Jonathan Swift and Joseph Addison. After two years of life, Tatler left a deep trace in Britain's cultural and literary life. Numerous subsequent incarnations like Tatler in Edinburgh, Female Tatler, the Northern Tatler, and London Tatler continued for decades. Even nowadays, there is an eponymous British magazine of the same thematical direction. After the closure, all Tatler editions were issued as several volumes of collected works, presented here.

He is notable both for the indirect propaganda he developed with Addison and for the open partisanship of his own periodicals. He wrote extensively about responsible economics but was famously irresponsible in his own affairs.

This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In American Little Magazines of the Fin de Siecle, Kirsten MacLeod examines the rise of a new print media form – the little magazine – and its relationship to the transformation of American cultural life at the turn of the twentieth century. Though the little magazine has long been regarded as the preserve of modernist avant-gardes and elite artistic coteries, for whom it served as a form of resistance to mass media, MacLeod’s detailed study of its origins paints a different picture. Combining cultural, textual, literary, and media studies criticism, MacLeod demonstrates how the little magazine was deeply connected to the artistic, social, political, and cultural interests of a rising professional-managerial class. She offers a richly contextualized analysis of the little magazine’s position in the broader media landscape: namely, its relationship to old and new media, including pre-industrial print forms, newspapers, mass-market magazines, fine press books, and posters. MacLeod’s study challenges conventional understandings of the little magazine as a genre and emphasizes the power of “little” media in a mass-market context.

Download or read book Mapping the Bones written by Jane Yolen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the best-selling and award-winning author of The Devil's Arithmetic, Jane Yolen, comes her first Holocaust novel in nearly thirty years. Influenced by Dr. Mengele's sadistic experimentations, this story follows twins as they travel from the Lodz ghetto, to the partisans in the forest, to a horrific concentration camp where they lose everything but each other. It's 1942 in Poland, and the world is coming to pieces. At least that's how it seems to Chaim and Gittel, twins whose lives feel like a fairy tale torn apart, with evil witches, forbidden forests, and dangerous ovens looming on the horizon. But in all darkness there is light, and the twins find it through Chaim's poetry and the love they have for each other. Like the bright flame of a Yahrzeit candle, his words become a beacon of memory so that the children and grandchildren of survivors will never forget the atrocities that happened during the Holocaust. Filled with brutality and despair, this is also a story of poetry and strength, in which a brother and sister lose everything but each other. Nearly thirty years after the publication of her award-winning and bestselling The Devil's Arithmetic and Briar Rose, Yolen once again returns to World War II and captivates her readers with the authenticity and power of her words. Praise for Mapping the Bones: "Jane Yolen's Mapping the Bones is a swift and deadly drama with overtones of dark fable we all wish we could forget. But this book, a shining star held in a trembling palm, requires us to remember." --Gregory Maguire, internationally bestselling author of Wicked "Mapping the Bones is spare and beautiful and haunting.
