Book excerpt: Biological Chirality describes this occurrence, its history, and early research around the topic. The work covers analytical methods for observing the phenomenon, providing current techniques and practice and discussing the asymmetric morphology of certain living organisms, such as the position of the heart and liver in humans and the exceptions to biological homochirality seen in D-Amino Acids. In addition, it explores the requirement of enantioselectivity prepared pharmaceuticals to address enantioselectivities biomolecules, a major challenge in today's organic chemistry. Finally, the work considers the possible origin of biological homochirality, as well as the outlook for future research in this area. - Describes the history of biological chirality research, its possible origins, and future exploration areas - Discusses asymmetric exceptions in morphology and D-Amino Acids - Explores the critical implications of enantioselective biomolecules for preparative organic chemistry with a goal of developing effective pharmaceuticals

Book Metabolism and Bacterial Pathogenesis

Download or read book Metabolism and Bacterial Pathogenesis written by Tyrrell Conway and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundbreaking thinking on how bacterial metabolism is foundational to pathogenesis For too long, bacterial metabolism and bacterial pathogenesis have been studied as separate entities. However, the scientific community is beginning to realize that not only are bacterial nutrient acquisition and utilization essential for pathogenesis, but that interfering with the pathogen-specific metabolic pathways used during infection can regulate virulence factor expression and might lead to effective breakthroughs in a variety of treatments. Editors Paul Cohen and Tyrrell Conway, who pioneered the use of metabolic mutants in competitive colonization assays, an approach now widely used to investigate the nutrition of pathogens in vivo, are uniquely qualified to advance our knowledge of this integrative field of research. They convened a group of contributors who are breaking new ground in understanding how bacterial metabolism is foundational to pathogenesis to share their expert perspectives and outlook for the future. Beginning with overviews, Metabolism and Bacterial Pathogenesis covers a wide range of diseases and both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria that serve as model systems for in vitro and in vivo investigations intracellular, respiratory, and enteric pathogens pathogen-specific nutrient acquisition in hosts mechanisms of host-driven metabolic adaptation by pathogens metabolic regulation of virulence gene expression Useful for specialists in bacterial pathogenesis and specialists in metabolism as well as molecular biologists, physicians, veterinarians, dentists, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory technicians, Metabolism and Bacterial Pathogenesis is also essential reading for scientists studying the microbiome.

Book Handbook of Genetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert C. King
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 1489917101
  • Pages : 668 pages

Download or read book Handbook of Genetics written by Robert C. King and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this and future volumes of the Handbook of Genetics is to bring together a collection of relatively short, authoritative essays or annotated compilations of data on topics of significance to geneticists. Many of the essays will deal with various aspects of the biology of certain species selected because they are favorite subjects for genetic investigation in nature or the laboratory. Often there will be an encyclopedic amount of information available on such a species, with new papers appearing daily. Most of these will be written for specialists in a jargon that is be wildering to a novice, and sometimes even to a veteran geneticist working with evolutionarily distant organisms. For such readers what is needed is a written introduction to the morphology, life cycle, reproductive be havior, and culture methods for the species in question. What are its par ticular advantages (and disadvantages) for genetic study, and what have we learned from it? Where are the classic papers, the key bibliographies, and how does one get stocks of wild type or mutant strains? The chapters devoted to different species will contain information of this sort. Only a few hundreds of the millions of species available to biologists have been subjected to detailed genetic study. However, those that have make up a very heterogeneous sample of the living world.

Book Bacillus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Colin R. Harwood
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 1489935029
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Bacillus written by Colin R. Harwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Bacillw; has a long history of importance, both from an economic point of view and as a source of experimental microorganisms. This volume critically reviews aspects of identification, molecular biology, and growth that are of impor tance for the current and anticipated future exploitation of members of this group. In addition, the volume includes a chapter on taxonomy, as the importance of good taxonomy is often not fully appreciated; on sporulation, since so many important products are produced concomitantly with this process and we are beginning to understand the mechanisms by which the process is controlled; and, finally, on the cell envelope, as we are only just beginning to appreciate the significance of dif ferences between the cell walls of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria for productivity and processing. The commercial importance of Bacillus lies mainly in the area of enzyme pro duction for the food, drink, and detergent markets. Increasingly, however, the ability of Bacillus to secrete proteins, coupled with its regulatory acceptability, has resulted in strenuous efforts to develop species of Bacillus as hosts for the produc tion of value-added heterologous proteins. Difficulties have often been encoun tered, indicating a need to divert more resources to improving our understanding of the molecular biology of members of this grou p. Experience with Escherichia coli, a far from ideal organism from a commercial point of view, suggests that an in creased investment in Bacillus is likely ultimately to be productive.

Book Economic Microbiology Primary Products of Metabolism

Download or read book Economic Microbiology Primary Products of Metabolism written by A.H. Rose and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Microbiology, Volume 2: Primary Products of Metabolism is part of a multi-volume series that aims to provide authoritative accounts of the many facets of exploitation and control of microbial activity. It discusses the production of industrially important chemicals by microbiological processes, specifically the production of primary products of metabolism. This volume includes accounts of the production of organic acids, nucleotides, and amino acids which form large and stable sectors of the microbiological industries. It also provides information on polysaccharide fermentations, which are currently undergoing extensive development. Further, there are discussions of the production of lipids and polyhydroxy alcohols, which have yet to be introduced on a commercial scale but could well become economically viable in the near future. Finally, there is also an account of the production of acetone and butanol by bacteria. This fermentation process featured significantly in the career of Chaim Weizmann, the first President of the State of Israel, and it is still operated in some countries.
