Excerpt: ...says of the valley under consideration, 'The ravine is now itself quite filled up, but nevertheless shows signs of its former concavity.' Brocardus had visited Jerusalem, and possibly was aware of the existence of the great tanks subsequently filled up. His description, at all events, now proves to be absolutely correct. By denying the existence of this valley, it became possible for the apologists of the traditional site of the Holy Sepulchre so to draw the line of the second wall as to pass entirely clear of the church on the east. It can hardly be now supposed that the city wall can have crossed the bed of so deep and wide a valley, leaving ground at an elevation 80 feet higher, and only 100 yards to the west, on the outside. The determination of the contour of the valley thus forces us to remove the line of the second wall further west, where a saddle of higher ground forms the head of the great valley. The tracing of the rock also throws light on the description which Josephus gives of the ancient city, which was rendered obscure by reason of the filling up of the valley. Josephus (5 Wars, iv. 1) speaks of the Tyropoeon Valley as dividing the hill Akra from that of the Upper City, ' and describes Akra (which was separated from the Temple Hill by another valley) as being 'gibbous' in shape (apqfitxoprog), or like the moon in the third quarter. Nearly all authorities agree in placing Akra near the present church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the gibbous shape of the spur, on which that church stands, is rendered conspicuous by the rock contours, but is not apparent from the surface contours. It will also be observed that a Hat terrace is here formed with a steep slope on both the east and west (see section, A, ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Survey of Western Palestine, Vol. 2: Memoirs of the Topography, Orography, Hydrography, and Archaeology The present Sheet contains 38 square miles of the sea-coast near Caesarea. It is divided into four districts by three perennial streams. Orography. - The slopes of Mount Carmel are immediately east of this Sheet. (See Sheet VIII.) The northern district of the Sheet is a narrow plain, cultivated, and having olive groves near the foot of the hills. It is bounded on the west by a low range of rocks, averaging 60 feet above the sea. The stony sides of this wall of rock separating the plain from the beach are extensively quarried. The shore itself is rocky from Tanturah as far north as the Jeziret el M kr; south of Tanturah is a fine, open sandy beach. A larger bay to the south and a smaller one to the north of this village break the shore-line. The second district south of Nahr ed Dufleh consists of marshy ground extending east to the foot of the hills, which are here bounded by the steep cliff of el Khashm, about 450 feet above the sea. From the south side of this promontory the plain suddenly widens. (See Sheet VIII.) The marsh is bounded by a dam on the north (see Kebarah, Section B.), and on the west the low range of rocks still separates the plain from the beach. The rocks are here covered with low brushwood. The beach is sandy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Survey of Western Palestine: Its Waterways, Plains,& Highlands The first instalment of the Survey of the Holy Land, which the Committees and Subscribers of the Palestine Exploration Fund have for so many years persevered in producing, is at length published, and together with the work at Jerusalem and minor results, it may well be offered as a justification of all the exertions, and outlay, which have been expended. This portion of the Survey of Palestine is bounded by the Nahr el Kasimiyeh or Litany River on the North, and by the Wady es, Seba on the South; with as much of the Jordan and the Dead Sea on the east, and of the Mediterranean Coast on the west, as the northern and southern limits admit. Within this extent are - the southern part of Ph nicia including Tyre but omitting Sidon; nearly the whole of Galilee; all Samaria; and the greater part of Judaea; - indeed from Dan to Beersheba. The whole of the surveyed area covers more than 6,000 square miles. The survey occupied seven years in the field, and more than two years in addition were spent in the preparation of the work for publication. The immediate results of this survey in particular include: 1. A large map on the scale of one mile to an inch, reproduced and published in 26 sheets, each of which measures 22 inches by 18, the whole when joined together extending to 13 feet by 7.2. A reduction of the large map for general purposes, on the scale of about 2 5/7 miles to an inch, in six sheets, the size when joined together being 5 by 3 feet. 3. Numerous special plans on large scales of towns, buildings, and ruins. 4. Memoirs composed from the field notes of the surveyors, and from abstracts of authentic works.
