Download or read book The Triumph of Odysseus written by Homer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-10-10 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triumph of Odysseus is part of the highly successful Reading Greek series. It presents the complete Greek text of Books 21 and 22 of Homer's Odyssey, faced with a running vocabulary with notes, and followed at the back of the book by a learning vocabulary. It is modelled on the two existing readers: A World of Heroes (1979) and The Intellectual Revolution (1980), and like them is fully illustrated. It makes an excellent introduction to Homer for those new to him, and provides accessible and confidence-building follow-up reading for others. The book can be used by anyone who has completed Reading Greek or is at an intermediate or advanced stage of ancient Greek, and it is ideal for use with students in the upper forms of schools, at university and in summer schools and weekend courses.

Download or read book Nursing before Nightingale 1815 1899 written by Carol Helmstadter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing Before Nightingale is a study of the transformation of nursing in England from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the emergence of the Nightingale nurse as the standard model in the 1890s. From the nineteenth century on historians have considered Florence Nightingale, with her training school established at St. Thomas's Hospital in 1860, the founder of modern nursing. This book investigates two major earlier reforms in nursing: a doctor-driven reform which came to be called the 'ward system,' and the reforms of the Anglican Sisters, known as the 'central system' of nursing. Rather than being the beginning of nursing reform, Nightingale nursing was the culmination of these two earlier reforms.

Download or read book Ordered to Care written by Susan M. Reverby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-08-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging study of the dilemmas faced by American nursing, which examines the ideology, practice, and efforts at reform of both trained and untrained nurses in the years between 1850 and 1945. Ordered to Care provides an overall history of nursing's development and places that growth within the context of topical questions raised by women's history and the social history of health care. Building upon extensive use of primary and quantitative data, the author creates a collective portrait of nursing, from the work of the individual nurse to the political efforts of its organizations. Dr Reverby contends that nursing's contemporary difficulties are caused by its historical obligation to care in a society that refuses to value caring. She examines the historical consequences of this critical dilemma and concludes with a discussion of why nursing will have to move beyond its obligation to care, and what the implications of this change would be for all of us.
