Book Methods and Mechanisms for Producing Ions from Large Molecules

Download or read book Methods and Mechanisms for Producing Ions from Large Molecules written by K.G. Standing and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Methods and Mechanisms for Producing Ions from Large Molecules was held at Minaki Lodge, Minaki, Ontario, Canada, from 24 to 28 June 1990. The workshop was hosted by the time-of-flight group of the Department of Physics at the University of Manitoba, and was attended by 64 invited participants from around the world. Twenty-nine invited talks were given and 19 papers were presented as posters. Of the 48 contributions, 38 are included in these proceedings. The conference was organized to study the rapidly changing field of mass spectrometry of biomolecules. Particle-induced desorption (especially with MeV particles) has been the most effective method of producing molecular ions from biomolecules. An important part of the workshop was devoted to recent developments in this field, particularly to progress in understanding the fundamentals of the desorption process. In this respect, the meeting was similar to previous conferences in Marburg, FRG (1978); Paris, F (1980); Uppsala, S (1981); College Station, USA (1983,1984); Wangerooge, FRG (1986); Orsay, F (1988); Spiekeroog, FRG (1989); and to the IFOS series of meetings at Munster, FRG (1981,1983,1985,1987) and L6vAnger, S (1989). As in the most recent of these meetings, there was some emphasis on new developments, particularly cluster bombardment. A departure from the concentration on particle bombardment processes at this conference was inspired by the dramatic results obtained with two new methods for producing molecular ions from large molecules: matrix-assisted laser desorption and electrospray.

Book Lasers and Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Lasers and Mass Spectrometry written by David M. Lubman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990-04-12 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors to this volume focus on the fundamentals of the technique of analyzing material based on the atomic weight of the species, using the power and definition of lasers to enable measurement of smaller quantities and more finely localized particles. Each chapter deals with a particular application area and should be sufficient to form an entry point for the utilization of mass spectrometry by graduate students and researchers. The book provides the first full discussion of the new techniques of laser applications in the field.

Book Rarefied Gas Dynamics

Download or read book Rarefied Gas Dynamics written by Alfred E. Beylich and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 1638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the most recent international research in the field of rarefied gas dynamics (RGD). Unique in the depth and scope of its presentation, it considers progress made in the treatment of non-equilibrium phenomena in such fields as aerospace, vacuum technology, isotope separation and gas dynamic lasers. Due to the broad range of RGD applications, the volume will appeal to readers from numerous fields (e.g. physics, engineering, mathematics, chemistry).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles and updates the best articles to date from the eleven-year history of Spectroscopy magazine's successful "Molecular Spectroscopy Workbench" column. From the fundamentals of important techniques to novel time- and money-saving ideas, it draws from a broad spectrum of recent developments in the field of molecular spectroscopy, including information on near and midrange infrared techniques, optical rotation/circular dichroism, UV/Vis and fluorescence, mass spectrometry, acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs), fiber optics, and miscellaneous techniques and new hardware.

Book The Encyclopedia of Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Mass Spectrometry written by Michael L. Gross and published by Elsevier Science. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 6: Ionization Methods captures the story of molecular ionization and its phenomenal evolution that makes mass spectrometry the powerful method it is today. Chapters 1 and 2 cover fundamentals and various issues that are common to all ionization (e.g., accurate mass, isotope clusters, and derivatization). Chapters 3-9 acknowledge that some ionization methods are appropriate for gas-phase molecules and others for molecules that are in the solid or liquid states. Chapters 3-6 cover gas-phase molecules, dividing the subject into: (1) ionization of gas-phase molecules by particles (e.g., EI), (2) ionization by photons, (3) ionization by ion-molecule and molecule-molecule reactions (e.g., APCI and DART), and ionization in Strong electric fields (i.e., Electrohydrodynamic and Field Ionization/Desorption). "Ionization in a Strong Electric Field" illustrates the transition to ionization of molecules in the solid or liquid states, covered in Chapters 7-9: (1) spray methods for ionization (e.g., electrospray), (2) desorption ionization by particle bombardment (e.g., FAB), and (3) desorption by photons (e.g., MALDI). Electrospray and MALDI also lead to applications in biophysical chemistry, the theme of Chapter 10. Chapter 11 reconsiders ionization from the view of choosing an ionization method. The range of subjects is from ionization of organic and biomolecules to the study of microorganisms.
