It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, finally, back in print. This is a freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and gives you a short overview and insight of this work and the author's style: Soak and scald a pair of sweetbreads, cut into small bits; take liquor from three dozen large oysters; add to sweetbreads with 3 tablespoons of gravy from the roast beef, and 1/4 lb. of butter chopped and rolled in flour; cook until sweetbreads are tender; add oysters; cook 5 minutes; add 3/4 cup of cream; serve with or without toast. ...Lay in a layer of chicken; now potatoes, sprinkle with a little salt and pepper; now cut thin strips of dough, lay across; then a layer of chicken; then a layer of potatoes, and so on until the top of the pan is reached; pour over all the chicken, the gravy and put a crust over all the top and bake until well done and nicely browned. ...Brown a thick slice from a round of beef in a hot pan and season carefully, adding water to make a pan gravy; add also a pint of tomato juice and onion juice to taste; cover and simmer gently for at least an hour and a half; turn the meat frequently, keeping the gravy in sufficient quantity to insure that the meat shall be thoroughly moist and thoroughly seasoned. ...Cook two tablespoons of chopped onion in a tablespoon of butter and a little water until it is tender, then mix with it one cupful each of grated cheese, chopped English walnuts and bread crumbs, salt and pepper to taste and the juice of half a lemon; moisten with water, using that in which the onion has been cooked; put into a shallow baking dish and brown in the oven. ...Cut the tomatoes and onions and boil one hour with the sugar, vinegar and salt; at the end of an hour put it through a sieve; now return to the stove and add your red peppers, cut very fine, and cook one more hour.

Book excerpt: The Suffrage Cook Book: Compiled By Mrs. L. O. Kleber This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

You might follow that up with Parliament Gingerbread or Strawberry Shortcake á la Mode. To top it off, why not toast the Suffragettes’ success with a Peppermint Cup or an Albuminous Beverage? Originally published in 1915 to help raise funds for the campaign for the vote for women. History and fun all in one book! This new edition includes vintage illustrations and short biographies of many of the contributors as well as a new endnote by award-winning writer Cheryl Robson, which places the book both in its historical and contemporary contexts. Authors Mrs L.O.Kleber (compiler) Born in Freeport, Pa on April 4th,1867, she moved to Pittsburgh where she lived for 40 years and was often referred to as Pittsburg's 'most interesting woman'. She devoted herself to public works and was years ahead of her time, organising food relief and garden projects in the city's slum districts. Initially opposed to women having the vote, she was converted to the suffrage cause by Mrs Henry Villard, the daughter of William Lloyd Garrison, a famous slavery abolitionist. She wrote to many famous men and women to collect the recipes for The Suffrage Cookbook which she published in 1915 to raise funds for the suffrage cause. Theodore Roosevelt was the only man who failed to send a recipe, claiming that he was too busy to do so. Following the success of the campaign for the vote in 1920, she became the director of the Allegheny County League of Women Voters. She died on April 4, 1939, aged 72 at her home at 1135 Murrayhill Avenue, Pittsburgh. Cheryl Robson (editor of new edition and author of afterword) Cheryl is the founder of Aurora Metro Books. She has won numerous awards for her plays, books and films. She decided to revise and re-publish Kleber's 1915 Suffrage Cookbook to coincide with a touring exhibition that she had produced about the suffragists' campaign for the vote in the UK. Titled 'How the Vote was Won', the exhibition toured to libraries, museums and theatres in southeast England in 2018, the centenary of some women gaining the right to vote in the UK. You can watch a video about the project here. https://vimeo.com/276278481 Reviews “It’s a fabulous historical document of its time but also an interesting cook book to boot, interspersed as it is with line drawings and including letters to the editor – or Editress as she is described in the contents section of the book. Recipes aside this is a great gift idea. It’s both practical and fascinating on so many levels and I’ll be trying out more of the recipes over time. A unique way to celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote.” – Frost Magazine “Great fun for cooks.” ***** – Robert Armin, Amazon “The recipes in the compilation run the gamut from simple soups to fish (Virginia fried oysters and ‘shrimp wriggle’ both make the cut), meat (the baked ham à la Miller is described as “a dish fit for the greatest epicure”), breads and puddings, the latter section incorporating a series of “admonitions” directed at “those who would excel in cake making”. As the writer Cheryl Robson observes in her endnote, “most of the contributors to this cookbook are long-forgotten but their legacy survives today in the spirit of social activism that inspires others to work for a better, fairer world”. – Town and Country Magazine “Giving Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson a run for their money, the cookbook includes a wide range of soups, salads and casseroles. Drinks also feature, from the “Peppermint Cup” to a wide selection of “Albuminous Beverages” (“When a large amount of nutriment is required the albuminized drinks are valuable. The egg is a fluid food until its albumen is coagulated by heat.”) Kleber, however, writes in her foreword to the book that “as it is a serious matter what is put into the human stomach, I feel it incumbent to say that my readers may safely eat everything set down in this book”. She does add that, while she has tested most of the recipes herself, “it being a human Cook Book there will likely be some errors, but as correcting errors is the chief duty and occupation of Suffrage Women, I shall accept gratefully whatever criticisms these good women may have to offer”. – The Guardian

Kleber Introduction There are cook books and cook books, and their generation is not ended; a generation that began in the Garden of Eden, presumably, for if Mother Eve was not vastly different from her daughters she knew how to cook some things better than her neighbors, and they wanted to know how she made them and she wanted to tell them. Indeed, it has been stated that the very first book printed, a small affair, consisted mainly of recipes for "messes" of food, and for remedies for diseases common in growing families. Whether the very first book printed was a cook book or not, it is quite true that among the very oldest books extant are those telling how to prepare food, clothing and medicine. Some of these make mighty interesting reading, particularly the portions relating to cures for all sorts of ills, likewise of love when it seemed an ill, and of ill luck. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: The Cookbook that Fueled a Movement-in more ways than one. To all appearances the intent of this cookbook was to raise money for the Equal Franchise Federation of Western Pennsylvania; but there was more to it than that. A lot more. In order to get the 19th (Suffrage) Amendment passed, women had to win the support of a large number of male voters, as well as the support of other women. The first goal was not easy because, among other things, men were worried that women would lose sight of their traditional roles as homemakers. And the education of their fellow women was made difficult because, in many homes, suffrage literature was simply not allowed. So what could be more innocent and less threatening then to produce a cookbook filled with homey recipes? Yet it also contained on its pages messages of equality, and notes of support for universal suffrage. There were recipes for orange marmalade, but there were also recipes for a "Pie for a Suffragist's Doubting Husband." In effect, this book, and others like it, was both an exemplary demonstration of domesticity-and a Trojan Horse. To be sure, several of these recipes might give a modern day, health conscious, nutritionist a case of the vapors. Neverthe-less, they were among the best recipes these women had; and even by today's standards, they're still delicious! From its pages you can not only generate a great meal, but you can read a slice of history while you're at it.

Book Sourcebook of Family Theories and Methods

Download or read book Sourcebook of Family Theories and Methods written by Pauline Boss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins We call this book on theoretical orientations and methodological strategies in family studies a sourcebook because it details the social and personal roots (i.e., sources) from which these orientations and strategies flow. Thus, an appropriate way to preface this book is to talk first of its roots, its beginnings. In the mid 1980s there emerged in some quarters the sense that it was time for family studies to take stock of itself. A goal was thus set to write a book that, like Janus, would face both backward and forward a book that would give readers both a perspec tive on the past and a map for the future. There were precedents for such a project: The Handbook of Marriage and the Family edited by Harold Christensen and published in 1964; the two Contemporary Theories about theFamily volumes edited by Wesley Burr, Reuben Hill, F. Ivan Nye, and Ira Reiss, published in 1979; and the Handbook of Marriage and the Family edited by Marvin Sussman and Suzanne Steinmetz, then in production.
