Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Subjective View of Landscape Painting: With Special Reference to J. H. Weissenbruch and Illustrations From Works of His in Canada The writer hopes that this little pamphlet may prove of some interest to lovers of art, and, perhaps, may bring some information that may be of use to those commencing to study pictures, and save them some time and trouble by bringing before them, in compact form, the opinions of critics and writers about painting. He has always, himself, been very much obliged to anyone who has helped to shorten the road for him. Regarding the opinions expressed about the seven Dutch artists spoken of in these pages as the great forces in modern Dutch art, he has made a study of their works for some years, and is firmly of the opinion that seldom in the world's history has a greater group of individual artists appeared. He believes that this will be the ultimate opinion of the public. The frontispiece, from a photograph taken in 1900, shows J. H. Weissenbruch and the picture he painted for the Paris Universal Exhibition. The other portrait is from a water colour drawing by Josef Israels, made some years ago. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Painting and Modern Dutch Artists The same scene might be painted by Ruys dael and Hobbema, by Constable and Turner, by Daubigny and Rousseau, and each pic ture would take on the spirit of the individual artist, and give the observer very different ideas of identical views. For if it is not the actual scene before him that is painted, but his idea of it, it is evident that the personality of the artist counts for a very great deal in pictures; and so it is the subjective view of art that is the all-important one. Download or read book Landscape Painting written by Mitchell Albala and published by Watson-Guptill. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because nature is so expansive and complex, so varied in its range of light, landscape painters often have to look further and more deeply to find form and structure, value patterns, and an organized arrangement of shapes. In Landscape Painting, Mitchell Albala shares his concepts and practices for translating nature's grandeur, complexity, and color dynamics into convincing representations of space and light. Concise, practical, and inspirational, Landscape Painting focuses on the greatest challenges for the landscape artist, such as: • Simplification and Massing: Learn to reduce nature's complexity by looking beneath the surface of a subject to discover the form's basic masses and shapes.• Color and Light: Explore color theory as it specifically applies to the landscape, and learn the various strategies painters use to capture the illusion of natural light.• Selection and Composition: Learn to select wisely from nature's vast panorama. Albala shows you the essential cues to look for and how to find the most promising subject from a world of possibilities. The lessons in Landscape Painting—based on observation rather than imitation and applicable to both plein air and studio practice—are accompanied by painting examples, demonstrations, photographs, and diagrams. Illustrations draw from the work of more than 40 contemporary artists and such masters of landscape painting as John Constable, Sanford Gifford, and Claude Monet. Based on Albala's 25 years of experience and the proven methods taught at his successful plein air workshops, this in-depth guide to all aspects of landscape painting is a must-have for anyone getting started in the genre, as well as more experienced practitioners who want to hone their skills or learn new perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notions of identity have long structured women’s art. Dynamics of race, class, and gender have shaped the production of artworks and oriented their subsequent reassessments. Arguably, this is especially true of art by women, and of the socially engaged criticism that addresses it. If identity has been a problem in women’s art, however, is more identity the solution? In this study of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art in Canada, Kristina Huneault offers a meditation on the strictures of identity and an exploration of forces that unsettle and realign the self. Looking closely at individual artists and works, Huneault combines formal analysis with archival research and philosophical inquiry, building nuanced readings of objects that range from the canonical to the largely unknown. Whether in miniature portraits or genre paintings, botanical drawings or baskets, women artists reckoned with constraints that limited understandings of themselves and others. They also forged creative alternatives. At times identity features in women’s artistic work as a failed project; at other times it marks a boundary beyond which they were able to expand, explore, and exult. Bringing together settler and indigenous forms of cultural expression and foregrounding the importance of colonialism within the development of art in Canada, I’m Not Myself at All observes and reactivates historical art by women and prompts readers to consider what a less restrictive conceptualization of selfhood might bring to current patterns of cultural analysis.
