Book excerpt: "Never before, in the entire history of the American theater, has so much of the truth of Black people's lives been seen on the stage," observed James Baldwin shortly before A Raisin in the Sun opened on Broadway in 1959. This edition presents the fully restored, uncut version of Hansberry's landmark work with an introduction by Robert Nemiroff. Lorraine Hansberry's award-winning drama about the hopes and aspirations of a struggling, working-class family living on the South Side of Chicago connected profoundly with the psyche of Black America—and changed American theater forever. The play's title comes from a line in Langston Hughes's poem "Harlem," which warns that a dream deferred might "dry up/like a raisin in the sun." "The events of every passing year add resonance to A Raisin in the Sun," said The New York Times. "It is as if history is conspiring to make the play a classic."

Book A Raisin in the Sun Is working hard enough to achieve one s American Dream

Download or read book A Raisin in the Sun Is working hard enough to achieve one s American Dream written by Kathrin Unglaub and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Duisburg-Essen, course: A Survey of American Literature, language: English, abstract: This term paper deals with the play "A Raisin in the Sun" and how the concept of the American Dream appears in the play. It will be discussed if working hard is enough to reach one’s American Dream. The play is written by Lorraine Hansberry and published in 1958. It takes place in the south of Chicago where the Younger family lives and consists of five people from three different generations. Head of the family is Lena, who is mostly called Mama, right after her we got her son Walter Lee, who will be presented in the main part of this term paper. Besides, there is Walter’s wife Ruth and their son Travis. The last member of the Youngers is Walter’s sister Beneatha. Mama embodies the first generation and is quite traditional. Ruth, Walter and “Bennie” represent the second generation, whereas Travis is the only child in the third generation. The family has been living in America in the fifth generation and has got African roots. It can be said though that Walter, Bennie, Ruth and Travis are less traditional than Mama and identify with the American way of life. The whole family shares a small apartment in a ghetto and living together is difficult as everybody has got his or her own desire, Dream and point of view about certain topics. Especially Walter Lee expects a lot from life and the reader sympathizes with him. Misunderstood by his family Walter wants to live a better life and represents the concept of the American Dream of a person wanting to “rise from rags to riches”. Walter dreams of an office job and really dislikes being a chauffeur for a white person. He wants his son to go to the best schools and to get the best education as possible. Furthermore, he also wants to spoil his wife and get himself a nice car. But why does he fail? Why does nobody in his family support his idea of raising an own business, namely opening a liquor store? Beneatha is not even surprised about Walter’s failure. These questions shall be answered in the main part of this paper. Moreover, I quickly want to present the concept of the American Dream, especially focusing on the Dream of “Upward Mobility”.

Book The Option of Urbanism

Download or read book The Option of Urbanism written by Christopher B. Leinberger and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are voting with their feet to abandon strip malls and suburban sprawl, embracing instead a new type of community where they can live, work, shop, and play within easy walking distance. In The Option of Urbanism visionary developer and strategist Christopher B. Leinberger explains why government policies have tilted the playing field toward one form of development over the last sixty years: the drivable suburb. Rooted in the driving forces of the economy—car manufacturing and the oil industry—this type of growth has fostered the decline of community, contributed to urban decay, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and contributed to the rise in obesity and asthma. Highlighting both the challenges and the opportunities for this type of development, The Option of Urbanism shows how the American Dream is shifting to include cities as well as suburbs and how the financial and real estate communities need to respond to build communities that are more environmentally, socially, and financially sustainable.

Book Once the American Dream

Download or read book Once the American Dream written by Bernadette Hanlon and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time, a move to the suburbs was the American Dream for many families. However, despite the success of Levittown, NY,impoverished “inner-ring” suburbs—those closest to the urban core of metropolitan cities—like Lansdowne, MD, are in decline. As aging housing stock, foreclosures, severe fiscal problems, slow population growth, increasing poverty, and struggling local economies affect inner-ring suburbs, what can be done to save them? Once the American Dream analyzes this downward trend, examining 5,000 suburbs across 100 different metropolitan areas and census regions in 1980 and 2000. Hanlon defines the suburbs’ geographic boundaries and provides a ranking system for assessing and acting upon inner-ring suburban decline. She also illuminates her detailed statistical analysis with vivid case studies. She demonstrates how other suburbs, particularly those in the outer reaches of cities, flourished during the 1980s and 1990s. Once the American Dream closes with a discussion of policy implications and recommendations for policymakers and planners who deal with suburbs of various stripes.

Book Data and the American Dream

Download or read book Data and the American Dream written by Matthew J. Holian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book paints a portrait of social life in America by providing an accessible discussion of empirical economics research on issues such as illegal immigration, health care and climate change. All the studies in this book use the same data source: individual responses to the American Community Survey (ACS), the nation's largest household survey. The author identifies studies that clearly illustrate core econometric methods (such as regression control and difference-in-differences), replicates key statistics from the studies, and helps the reader to carefully interpret the statistics. This book has a companion website with replication files in R and Stata format. The Appendix to this book contains a guide to using the free R software, downloading the ACS and other public-use microdata, and running the replication files, which assumes no background knowledge on the part of the reader beyond introductory statistics. By opening up the hood on how top scholars use core econometric methods to analyze large data sets, a motivated reader with a decent computer and Internet connection can use this book to learn not only how to replicate published research, but also to extend the analysis to create new knowledge about important social phenomena. A more casual reader can skip the online supplements and still gain data-driven insights into social and economic behavior. The book concludes by describing how careful empirical estimates can guide decision making, through cost-benefit analysis, to find public policies that lead to greater happiness while accounting for environmental, public health and other impacts. With its accessible discussion, glossary, detailed learning goals, end of chapter review questions and companion resources, this book is ideal for use as a supplementary volume in introductory econometrics or research methods courses.

Book Route to Success

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Route to Success: An American Dream Tale is an autobiography of an African child who grew up in a small village in Cote d’Ivoire. Unlike his own children, he was born under banana trees. Before and after his birth, no medical attention was ever given to his mother or to him. Despite the limited opportunities for a child during the postcolonial years, his parents thought that the future of their child was to be assimilated to Western culture. Hence, at six years old, the child was sent to school away from his native and natural environment. This early decision of his parents enrolling him in school led him to successfully complete his education in Cote d’Ivoire and later in North America. This book is divided in five chapters as follows: 1. Building a foundation for success 2. Brief transition 3. Cultural transformation and determination to acquire higher education 4. Drive to pursue higher education in USA 5. Inspirational career The lectures of the aforementioned five chapters present the challenges and the success story of the author. This autobiography shares the author’s lifetime experience and sends a message to the future generation that hard work, courage, determination, perseverance, and strong desire to succeed can always lead to fulfillment of better life and accomplishment. Many challenges, strains, and pain have often left the author of this memoir physically and emotionally exhausted as he has gone through his academic and/or professional life. However, his self-confidence, self-esteem, pride, values, commitment to edification, and devotion to hard work are the major forces to successfully reach his goals and be able to share his legacy of success in this manuscript today.

Book The American Dream Comes True

Download or read book The American Dream Comes True written by Manfred Brecker and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Dream Comes True By Manfred Brecker The American Dream Comes True was written to introduce Manfred Brecker’s father to his siblings. It is a story that takes into account a history of their family, which spans almost one hundred years. It is a story of how an ordinary man achieved the highest awards a soldier can attain in the Kaiser’s army during World War I. Max Brecker was decorated with two Iron Crosses. These awards were earned on the battlefield. The story portrays his experiences during the war and into the post-World War I years in Germany, living through the transition from a monarchy to a republic into a dictatorship and finally the hardship of surviving during the Hitler years. Even though having amassed a great fortune and a national reputation, conditions enforced by the Nazis made living in Germany for a Jew very dangerous. Leaving Germany was the only option. Leaving behind his wealth and power, the patriarch of the family has to start life anew. This story shows us his courage and great wisdom, which has assured that there would be siblings on this earth today.

Book The American Dream

Download or read book The American Dream written by Joseph L. Daleiden and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can each of us achieve our own American dream while recognizing needs of other individuals, society, and future generations? Not if our present national policies continue, warns long term planning expert Joseph L. Daleiden. He persuasively argues that if present socioeconomic trends remain, our nation faces social disaster before the middle of the 21st century. These trends can be reversed, he insists, but only if we are willing to (1) reject failed policies both liberal and conservative directed at population growth, the environment, the national debt, trade, poverty, crime, race relations, education, healthcare, social security, and tax reform; (2) accept that all of these areas of concern are intertwined; and (3) take responsibility for our decisions.Avoiding ideology and platitudes, Daleiden's pragmatic approach relies on actual evidence of how prospective policies will influence human behavior and whether their outcomes will increase or decrease human happiness in the long run.Joseph L. Daleiden (Evanston, IL) is also the author of The Final Superstition: A Critical Evaluation of the Judeo-Christian Legacy, and The Science of Morality: The Individual, Community, and Future Generations.
