Book The Student s Handbook of Stratigraphical Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Student s Handbook of Stratigraphical Geology Classic Reprint written by A. J. Jukes-Browne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Handbook of Stratigraphical Geology Scope of the Subject - In most manuals of Geology this branch of the subject is called Stratigraphical Geology because it chiefly consists in the description of the great stratified series of rocks which make up the mass of the earth's crust. It is some times called Historical Geology, because it should comprise not only a description of the various rocks which were formed during each period of the world's history, but also some account of the forms of life which are entombed in these rocks, with a sketch of the physical geography of the earth during each period, and a notice of the changes in the relative position of land and sea which took place from time to time all this should be made as complete as the imperfection of the geological documents will allow. Neither designation is quite satisfactory, but either of them may be used so long as it is understood to mean a geological history - a collation of the knowledge acquired in all the other depart ments of the Science, and its application to elucidate the history of the earth, or of a portion of the earth, from the earliest time of which any records exist down to the time of human history. At present there are only a few limited areas of the earth's surface about which we have anything like a full stratigraphical knowledge, and much remains to be learnt even in the areas about which we know most. Geological History, therefore, is yet in its infancy; but enough is now known of the stratigraphical geology of Europe to make it possible to give an outline of its geological history, and American geologists are rapidly making it possible to do the same for North America. In this volume, however, we shall not travel beyond the limits of the British Islands, except where our own records are deficient, or where some knowledge of continental geology is necessary to the proper understanding of the changes that took place in Britain. Book The Student s Manual of Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Student s Manual of Geology Classic Reprint written by J. Beete Jukes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Manual of Geology The Author of this work had made some progress in the preparation of the present edition before the illness seized him by which he was removed from among us. Finding the task to be greater than, with his impaired health, he could accomplish, he asked me to relieve him of it; and I accord ingly undertook to prepare this re-issue. My labours, how ever, were unfortunately suspended for nearly a year in consequence of a fever caught among the volcanic islands of the Liparis. Hence the delay in the appearance of the work. The reader will observe, on comparing the present with former editions, that so many changes have been made that it may in some respects be regarded as a new book. A large mass of additional material has been added; but, by adopting a different mode of printing, this has been effected without adding to the bulk of the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology With this keynote in mind, the attempt is made throughout the book to keep to matters that have a direct bearing on geologic history. The authors consider it a mistake to use the limited space in an ele mentary text for the exposition of scientific matters not directly a part of geology, however interesting they may be in themselves. For this reason the discussion of weather, of which at best only a smattering can be given in a geologic text, has been abandoned. Similarly a detailed discussion of the mechanics of glacier motion, which has inherent inter est but is not essential to an understanding of land sculpture by glaciers, is dispensed with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology Mineralogy, Petrology, Stratigraphical Geology, Terrestrial Cosmogony, Palaeontology, and other lines of research, though they may fairly be looked upon as subdivisions of Geology, are fast becoming separate Sciences. But while it has become almost an absolute necessity for most Geologists to concentrate their attention on some one department of the science and be content with a less perfect grasp of the rest, there is yet a certain basis or groundwork, with which every one who meddles with Geology, whatever be the branch to which he specially devotes himself, must be acquainted if his work is to be sound. For want of a knowledge of this groundwork the Petrologist, looking merely to chemical and mineralogical composition, classes together rocks which differ totally in their origin or manner of occurrence the Palaeontologist pure and simple is apt to force into an unnatural connection, on account of similarity in fossils, formations which physical evidence shows ought to be kept widely apart; the Field Geologist is content with tracing boundaries on his map, and forgets to ask himself how his lines were produced and what they mean.
