Book Naked Statistics Stripping the Dread from the Data

Download or read book Naked Statistics Stripping the Dread from the Data written by Charles Wheelan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller "Brilliant, funny…the best math teacher you never had." —San Francisco Chronicle Once considered tedious, the field of statistics is rapidly evolving into a discipline Hal Varian, chief economist at Google, has actually called "sexy." From batting averages and political polls to game shows and medical research, the real-world application of statistics continues to grow by leaps and bounds. How can we catch schools that cheat on standardized tests? How does Netflix know which movies you’ll like? What is causing the rising incidence of autism? As best-selling author Charles Wheelan shows us in Naked Statistics, the right data and a few well-chosen statistical tools can help us answer these questions and more. For those who slept through Stats 101, this book is a lifesaver. Wheelan strips away the arcane and technical details and focuses on the underlying intuition that drives statistical analysis. He clarifies key concepts such as inference, correlation, and regression analysis, reveals how biased or careless parties can manipulate or misrepresent data, and shows us how brilliant and creative researchers are exploiting the valuable data from natural experiments to tackle thorny questions. And in Wheelan’s trademark style, there’s not a dull page in sight. You’ll encounter clever Schlitz Beer marketers leveraging basic probability, an International Sausage Festival illuminating the tenets of the central limit theorem, and a head-scratching choice from the famous game show Let’s Make a Deal—and you’ll come away with insights each time. With the wit, accessibility, and sheer fun that turned Naked Economics into a bestseller, Wheelan defies the odds yet again by bringing another essential, formerly unglamorous discipline to life.

Book Dress Code

  • Author : Mari Grinde Arntzen
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2015-02-15
  • ISBN : 1780234627

Download or read book Dress Code written by Mari Grinde Arntzen and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Fashion is a form of ugliness so absolutely unbearable that we have to alter it every six months.” And yet it serves to make us beautiful, or at least make us feel beautiful. In this book, Mari Grinde Arntzen asks how and why this is—how can fashion simultaneously attract us to its glamour and repel us with its superficiality and how being called “fashionable” can be at once a compliment and an insult. Arntzen guides us through the major figures and brands of today’s fashion industry, showing how they shape us and in turn why we love to be shaped by them. She examines both everyday, affordable “fast fashion” brands, as well as the luxury market, to show how fashion commands a powerful influence on every socioeconomic level of our society. Stepping into our closets with us, she thinks about what happens when we get dressed: why fashion can make us feel powerful, beautiful, and original at the same time that it forces us into conformity. Stripping off the layers of the world’s fifth largest industry, garment by garment, she holds fashion up as a phenomenon, business, and art, exploring the questions it forces us to ask about the body, image, celebrity, and self-obsession. Ultimately, Arntzen asks the most direct question: what is fashion? How has it taken such a powerful hold on the world, forever propelling us toward its concepts of beauty?

Book Paying for Sex

Download or read book Paying for Sex written by Kerr Fuffle and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for - and by - horny males who are just too chicken to figure this stuff out for themselves. Commercial sex isn't exactly hard to find no matter where you live, so the main reason why guys who are otherwise interested in this sort of thing haven't managed to indulge in a fully satisfying way is that something - fear - is holding them back. So even if you're a total wuss, we'll show you how easy it is to buy sexual gratification with complete confidence. And if you've dabbled in some kinds of low risk sex-for-pay, such as Internet porn, we'll show you how to safely indulge in more adventurous amusements, such as strip clubs, brothels and escort services - legal ones, that is. If you just want to find some great online porn, have a naked stripper gyrating in your lap or getting laid by an erotic professional without putting your life, health, wallet or reputation at risk, we'll show you how. Here's a review of Paying for Sex by Doxy, who operates the popular web site Phone Slut Diary. "Next things second -- Phone Slut Diary had been featured in another independent publication and I promised to mention it here. Paying For Sex is a fabulous little "gentleman's guide to web porn, strip clubs, prostitutes & escorts without humiliation, job loss, bankruptcy, infection, bloodshed or incarceration." Because it does not address phone sex, but refers readers to my site (bless), authors Kerr Fuffle & Roscoe Spanks (it cannot possibly be their real names, can it?) decided to put in a few blurbs about me and some other net sites. Although I'm not a guy looking to hire an escort (and don't expect to be) I found many of the details and hints fascinating. The chapters on throwing brothel parties were absorbing. If you're a gentleman (or not so gentle man) that spends money on websites, strippers, or other such diversions this is a really handy little manual to getting the biggest bang for your buck without getting ripped off or in trouble. They explain etiquette, precautions, approximate pricing, common (and not so common) practices. Want to find out how to encourage a stripper to give you a little better than the regular treatment? It's in there. So, I'm going to be adding it to my Store shopping section because it's just awesome. And I'm quoted in very cute passages. And, you know, I'm an egomaniacal slut. No, really. Okay, well sometimes."

  • Author : Meggan Watterson
  • Publisher : Hay House, Inc
  • Release : 2013-04-03
  • ISBN : 1401938213
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Reveal written by Meggan Watterson and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Mary Magdalene Revealed Even as a little girl, Harvard-trained theologian Meggan Watterson knew something was missing from traditional religion – the voices of women. She knew these voices had never been silenced, just buried, so she began a pilgrimage to uncover the presence of the Divine Feminine. What she discovered along the way were not only the many stories, images, and voices of the Divine Feminine in world religions – Christianity’s Mary Magdalene, Hinduism’s Kali Ma, Buddhism’s Green Tara – but also her own spiritual voice, the one veiled beneath years of fear and self-doubt. After a revelation at a sacred site of the Black Madonna in Europe, Meggan realized that being spiritual for her was intricately tied to her view of her body. Rather than transcending the body, denying or ignoring it, she found that she must accept her body as sacred. Only then could she truly hear the voice of unfaltering love inside her – the voice of her soul. Watterson soon found that she was not alone, that there are countless women who long for a spirituality that encourages embodiment, that inspires them to abandon their fears but never themselves, and that shows them how to be led by the audacious and fiercely loving voice of truth inside them. No matter where you rest on the spectrum of spirituality – religious or secular, devout believer or chronic doubter, freelance mystic or borderline agnostic – this story is about the desire to shed what’s holding you back. With passion, humor, poetry, and raw honesty, Meggan provides what religion has left out – a way to lift the veils of your own fear and self-doubt to reveal your soul and find the Divine within.
