Book Stress corrosion Cracking and Hydrogen stress Cracking of High strength Steel

Download or read book Stress corrosion Cracking and Hydrogen stress Cracking of High strength Steel written by Ellis E. Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-strength steels are susceptible to delayed cracking under suitable conditions. Frequently such a brittle failure occurs at a stress that is only a fraction of the nominal yield strength. Considerable controversy exists over whether such failures result from two separate and distinct phenomena or whether there is but one mechanism called by two different names. Stress-corrosion cracking is the process in which a crack propagates, at least partially, by the stress induced corrosion of a susceptible metal at the advancing tip of the stress-corrosion crack. There is considerable evidence that this cracking results from the electrtrochemical corrosion of a metal subjected to tensile stresses, either residual or externally applied. Hydrogen-stress cracking is cracking which occurs as the result of hydrogen in the metal lattice in combination with tensile stresses. Hydrogen-stress cracking cannot occur if hydrogen is prevented from entering the steel, or if hydrogen that has entered during processing or service is removed before permanent damage has occurred. It is generally agreed that corrosion plays no part in the actual fracture mechanism. This report was prepared to point out wherein the two fracture mechanisms under consideration are similar and wherein they differ. From the evidence available today, the present authors have concluded that there are two distinct mechansims of delayed failure. (Author).

Book Comparative Stress Corrosion Cracking and General Corrosion Resistance of Annealed and Hardened 440C Stainless Steel

Download or read book Comparative Stress Corrosion Cracking and General Corrosion Resistance of Annealed and Hardened 440C Stainless Steel written by M. J. Mendreck and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) characteristics of annealed and hardened 440C stainless steel were evaluated in high humidity and 3.5-percent NaCl solution. Corrosion testing consisted of an evaluation of flat plates, with and without grease, in high humidity, as well as electrochemical testing in 3.5-percent NaCl. Stress corrosion testing consisted of conventional, constant strain, smooth bar testing in high humidity in addition to two relatively new techniques under evaluation at MSFC. These techniques involve either incremental or constant rate increases in the load applied to a precracked SE(B) specimen, monitoring the crack-opening-displacement reponse for indications of crack growth. The electrochemical corrosion testing demonstrated an order of magnitude greater general corrosion rate in the annealed 440C. All techniques for stress corrosion testing showed substantially better SCC resistance in the annealed material. The efficacy of the new techniques for stress corrosion testing was demonstrated both by the savings in time and the ability to better quantify SCC data.

Book The Stress Corrosion Resistance and Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of a High Strength Martensitic Stainless Steel Afc 77

Download or read book The Stress Corrosion Resistance and Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of a High Strength Martensitic Stainless Steel Afc 77 written by Donald Webster and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plane-strain corrosion threshold K sub(Iscc) and fatigue crack growth rate have been determined for a high strength martensitic stainless steel, AFC 77, in both conventionally processed and strain-aged conditions. The K sub(Iscc) (in 3.5-percent sodium chloride solution) is markedly affected by both the tempering temperature and the degree of strain aging. The highest K sub(Iscc) of 105 ksi square root of in. was obtained by tempering at 500F and the lowest K sub (Iscc) of 10 ksi square root of in. by tempering at 1100F. Retained austenite raised K sub(Iscc) at tempering temperatures up to 1000F, which was the highest tempering temperature at which austenite could be maintained. Fatigue crack growth rates in both dry air (
