Soon after that, he was a competent surveyor, and had been elected over popular and cultured men to a seat in the legislature. After but a short service there, he became the leader of the Sangamon delegation and of his party in the State; was envied by his associates for his political acumen, his resourcefulness, and his genius for leadership.
