Three out of the five chapters have been read as lectures and one of the others was meant for delivery at Oxford, though it was replaced, in fact, by a different discourse. Since the latest in date, chapter IV., was written, the Author has not Spoken in public but this paper, Candida Casa, is sufficiently like the rest in form, and closely enough connected with the course on The Pleasures of England, to justify the general title of the volume Verona, and other Lectures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Congress of Verona, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising a Portion of Memoirs of His Own Times The following work must not lie confounded with the Memoirs that are intended to appear only after my death. I now put forth that which I may utter while living; the rest will be revealed from the tomb. My literary life is pretty well known; but I have hitherto never alluded to my political career. I speak of it here for the first and last time; referring to my administration for the rest. While narrating as a public man, the most striking event of the Restoration, I have been compelled to introduce rather prominently, those public men with whom I came into contact. I jet not this, however, create alarm. It is myself only that I have not spared. If I have suffered to remain in certain documents, the unmerited encomiums which w'ere bestowed upon me, I have also carefully, and without abatement, recorded the censure I received. I have used towards myself, while writing history, the impartiality of the historian. Should this work succeed, it will effect a revolution in the opinions held with regard to a memorable epoch in our annals. The task is irksome, and I ought perhaps not to reckon upon success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narcissa or the Road to Rome: In Verona The turkeys seemed to approve of her appearance, for they gathered eagerly round her, trying to get their beaks into the dish she held, gobbling and fluttering, and making a great commotion. Narcissa was fond of the turkeys, and had names for all her favorites. The finest young gobbler was called Black Diamond, and he was apt to take unfair advantage of his mistress's partiality, and to get more than his Share. So noisy they all were, that Narcissa did not hear the sound of approaching footsteps, nor know that some one had spoken to her twice in vain, and was now standing in silent amusement, watching the struggle for food. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Gentlemen of Verona: A Comedy, in Five Acts We cannot part with Launce and his dog without noticing a little omission or inconsistency, which appears to have escaped the scrutiny of commentators. After making unheard-of sacri fices for his ungrateful cur through the strength of his attach ment, the clown seems to have gone to deliver him as a pre sent to mistress Silvia without any show of compunction or grief whatever. We cannot but think that Launce would have shed a few tears on the occasion. Unhandsomely as Crab had behaved, it could not have been without a struggle, that his mas ter would have summoned up resolution enough to abandon him to another. We look in vain for some manifestation of these re morseful feelings on the part of Launce. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Two Gentlemen of Verona Classic Reprint

Download or read book Two Gentlemen of Verona Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love. Friendship. Betrayal. Those are the themes of The Two Gentlemen of Verona, one of Shakespeare's earliest comedies. Critics tend to portray the play as a workshop effort that laid the groundwork for his later, more mature plays like As You Like It and Twelfth Night. The play is definitely a forerunner to those more sophisticated works, yet The Two Gentlemen of Verona stands on its own merit. The Two Gentlemen of Verona follows young Valentine and his best friend Proteus, as they take off on adventures beyond their home. The two come to conflict over the affections of beautiful Silvia, who happens to be betrothed to another guy. The two men jockey for position, forgetting their personal histories and prior loves. One of them commits a stunning betrayal, setting the stage for lessons about the nature of true friendship and true love. The Two Gentlemen of Verona may at times seem farcical, but it certainly is in keeping with the preoccupations of the then-young Bard. It will resonate with young people as well as those who remember how difficult it is to come of age with one's sanity intact. The Two Gentlemen of Verona echoes future Shakespearean developments, and one can find hints of characters to come, such as Twelfth Night's Viola. It is easy to see how the play could work on stage. Surprisingly there is even a role for a patient dog (named Crab). The Two Gentlemen of Verona is a true comedy that is not meant to be taken seriously. The invocation of both courtly love and romantic love adds emotional significance to the play. This edition gives a good introduction with plenty of notes about the proper stage direction. Readers who want something light but not frivolous will really enjoy the early Shakespeare. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
