Sultans and Spices, Guns and Greed, Race and Religion: The Story of Malacca will be valuable not only to a visitor to this historic city but will also inspire pride in Malaysians for it is also the story of the birth and growth of a nation. Allein takes the reader on a comprehensive but easy-to-read journey from its beginnings as a sleepy coastal fishing village on the west coast of Malaysia to its development into one of the most important trading centres in the world. The author brings to life the events and individuals who helped created Malacca in the long distant past and in more recent years. This book grew out of his own personal curiosity, and he writes not only to tell visitors more about his home town but also to inspire Malaccans to love and preserve their heritage.
Download or read book Asian Cinema and the Use of Space written by Lilian Chee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian cinemas are connected to global networks and participate in producing international film history while at the same time influenced and engaged by spatial, cultural, social and political transformations. This interdisciplinary study forwards a productive pairing of Asian cinemas and space, where space is used as a discursive tool to understand cinemas of Asia. Concentrating on the performative potential of cinematic space in Asian films, the contributors discuss how space (re)constructs forms of identities and meanings across a range of cinematic practices. Cities, landscapes, buildings and interiors actively shape cinematic performances of such identities and their significances. The essays are structured around the spatial themes of ephemeral, imagined and contested spaces. They deal with struggles for identity, belonging, autonomy and mobility within different national and transnational contexts across East, Southeast and parts of South Asia in particular, which are complicated by micropolitics and subcultures, and by the interventions and interests of global lobbies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Sounding the Indian Ocean is the first volume to integrate the fields of ethnomusicology and Indian Ocean studies. Drawing on historical and ethnographic approaches, the book explores what music reveals about mobility, diaspora, colonialism, religious networks, media, and performance. Collectively, the chapters examine different ways the Indian Ocean might be “heard” outside of a reliance on colonial archives and elite textual traditions, integrating methods from music and sound studies into the history and anthropology of the region. Challenging the area studies paradigm—which has long cast Africa, the Middle East, and Asia as separate musical cultures—the book shows how music both forms and crosses boundaries in the Indian Ocean world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten legendary princesses of Malaysia - some are mythical fairy princesses whose stories are as wonderful and romantic as any of the princess stories from around the world. One, Hang Li Po came from a far off land and her retinue of young beauties are believed to be the far distant mothers of the Nonya. Others were real historical figures although their stories have been embellished over the years as they were passed down from generation to generation. But all have fired our imagination with tales of their beauty, bravery, wisdom and spirit. Author Raman has done some serious research and Emila Yusof’s detailed illustrations are simply delightful.
