Book The United States 15th Infantry Regiment in China 1912 1938

Download or read book The United States 15th Infantry Regiment in China 1912 1938 written by Alfred Emile Cornebise and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-11-03 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking up its position astride the Peking-Mukden [Beijing-Shenyang] railway beginning in January, 1912, the United States Fifteenth Infantry Regiment was engaged in protecting American interests in China. The 1000 man force was especially challenged during the 1920s, those tumultuous years when warlords struggled to gain ascendancy in the Chinese Republic. Although Chiang Kai-shek established a measure of control in China by 1928, the regiment remained in China--partially to counter Japan's increasingly aggressive actions--despite considerable misgivings within and outside of the United States Army as to the feasibility, desirability, and ethical appropriateness of the policy retaining it there. The success of the Japanese in conquering much of eastern China finally compelled Washington to withdraw the regiment on March 2, 1938. This work recounts and assesses some aspects of the involvement and service of the Fifteenth Infantry Regiment during its fateful quarter of a century in the Orient between the World Wars. Also detailed is the Army's service in those years in general. Many insights are provided regarding the self-perceptions of a key generation of U.S. military personnel deployed there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the Civil War, volunteers from six counties in southeastern Alabama formed the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment. As part of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia--and briefly serving with Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee--the 15th Alabama was one of the Confederacy's most active regiments and fought in many of the war's key battles. Based on firsthand accounts, this volume chronicles the regiment's experiences from its organization in July 1861 through its surrender at Appomattox. Detailed firsthand accounts are given of the 15th's action at Shenandoah, Gettysburg, Chickamauga and Spotsylvania, along with intimate descriptions of camp life. Service records of each member are provided, including enlistment, hometown, battle wounds and, where applicable, cause of death.

Download or read book The Story of the Fifteenth Regiment written by Andrew E. Ford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Fifteenth Regiment: Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry; Civil War, 1861-1864 The officers of the Fifteenth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry held reunions October 21, 1864 and 1865. October 22, 1866, the regimental association was definitely organized. At the annual meetings of this association, which have been held on the anniversary of the battle of Ball's Bluff, the question of preparing a regimental history has often been discussed. As no one was found ready to write such a history, it was many years before anything resulted from this discussion. During this time many of the members of the regiment most capable of telling its story, or furnishing material therefor, had passed away, and the prospects that this ever would be told, by any one who had served in the regiment, had grown exceedingly slight. Still there were many who believed some account of the services of the regiment should be handed down to coming generations. Book Harlem s Rattlers and the Great War

Download or read book Harlem s Rattlers and the Great War written by Jeffrey T. Sammons and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2015-09-26 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When on May 15, 1918 a French lieutenant warned Henry Johnson of the 369th to move back because of a possible enemy raid, Johnson reportedly replied: "I'm an American, and I never retreat." The story, even if apocryphal, captures the mythic status of the Harlem Rattlers, the African-American combat unit that grew out of the 15th New York National Guard, who were said to have never lost a man to capture or a foot of ground that had been taken. It also, in its insistence on American identity, points to a truth at the heart of this book--more than fighting to make the world safe for democracy, the black men of the 369th fought to convince America to live up to its democratic promise. It is this aspect of the storied regiment's history--its place within the larger movement of African Americans for full citizenship in the face of virulent racism--that Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War brings to the fore. With sweeping vision, historical precision, and unparalleled research, this book will stand as the definitive study of the 369th. Though discussed in numerous histories and featured in popular culture (most famously the film Stormy Weather and the novel Jazz), the 369th has become more a matter of mythology than grounded, factually accurate history--a situation that authors Jeffrey T. Sammons and John H. Morrow, Jr. set out to right. Their book--which eschews the regiment's famous nickname, the "Harlem Hellfighters," a name never embraced by the unit itself--tells the full story of the self-proclaimed Harlem Rattlers. Combining the "fighting focus" of military history with the insights of social commentary, Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War reveals the centrality of military service and war to the quest for equality as it details the origins, evolution, combat exploits, and postwar struggles of the 369th. The authors take up the internal dynamics of the regiment as well as external pressures, paying particular attention to the environment created by the presence of both black and white officers in the unit. They also explore the role of women--in particular, the Women's Auxiliary of the 369th--as partners in the struggle for full citizenship. From its beginnings in the 15th New York National Guard through its training in the explosive atmosphere in the South, its singular performance in the French army during World War I, and the pathos of postwar adjustment--this book reveals as never before the details of the Harlem Rattlers' experience, the poignant history of some of its heroes, its place in the story of both World War I and the African American campaign for equality--and its full i

Those on duty who escaped capture June 22, and the few who returned from the hospitals, or from detached service, were assigned temporarily to another command. The members of Company I as a whole, since their term of service did not expire until August 5, and all those who had enlisted later than July 12, 1861, except under General Order 28, and those who had reiinlisted were for some two weeks following July 12, 1864, set apart as the Fifteenth Battallion, and as soon as arrangements could be perfected, transferred to the Twentieth. The story of their service in that regiment is briefly told after the Individual Record. From the various hospitals, from different points of detached service and to some slight extent from the field, all those who remained members of the Fifteenth on the 12th of July, 1864, and were not kept back by captivity or physical inability, joyfully prepared to return to their homes. Some eighty-five men were all that could be gathered at this time. This was only about five per cent. of the total number who had belonged to the regiment. Perhaps as many more were mustered out during the following year, individually or in squads, as their condition enabled them to leave the hospitals, as they were released from prison or as their term of service in the Twentieth and other organizations to which they had been transferred, ..
