Book The Origin of the Earth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin of the Earth Classic Reprint written by Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the Earth In telling the story of this search for the mode by which the earth came into being, we have let the Inci dents that led the Inquiry on from one stage to another fall in with the steps of the inquiry itself. It is in keeping with the purposes of this series of booklets that the motives which set researches a-going should have their place with the quests that arose from them. At any rate, it is clear that the reader will be at some advantage in forming his own judgment of the value of what is offered for his acceptance, if the lines along which the inquiry was approached, the conditions that afi'ected the mental attitude Of the inquirer, and the considerations that weighed in reaching conclusions are laid as frankly before him as the conclusions them selves. The reader will of course choose his own pace, but it were well if it were deliberate. Pictures Of nebulae and nebulous pictures rise slowly into good definition. Besides, the interpretations we ofi'er are tentative; it were well to detain them a little for scrutiny as they pass under review. The final story of the birth of the earth will come only after a time when the vestiges of creation have been more keenly discerned and more faithfully rendered than is possible now. Book One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe

Download or read book One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe written by William Carpenter and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much may be gathered, indirectly, from the arguments in these pages, as to the real nature of the Earth on which we live and of the heavenly bodies which were created for us. The reader is requested to be patient in this matter and not expect a whole flood of light to burst in upon him at once, through the dense clouds of opposition and prejudice which hang all around. Old ideas have to be gotten rid of, by some people, before they can entertain the new; and this will especially be the case in the matter of the Sun, about which we are taught, by Mr. Proctor, as follows: “The globe of the Sun is so much larger than that of the Earth that no less than 1,250,000 globes as large as the Earth would be wanted to make up together a globe as large as the Sun.” Whereas, we know that, as it is demonstrated that the Sun moves round over the Earth, its size is proportionately less. We can then easily understand that Day and Night, and the Seasons are brought about by his daily circuits round in a course concentric with the North, diminishing in their extent to the end of June, and increasing until the end of December, the equatorial region being the area covered by the Sun’s mean motion. If, then, these pages serve but to arouse the spirit of enquiry, the author will be satisfied.

Book The Making of the Earth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Making of the Earth Classic Reprint written by J. W. Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the Earth The origin of the earth deals with events of primeval antiquity and with conditions very different from those of the present time. Hence it is not surprising that we find the problem attended by many uncertainties, for we only know the earth after it has waxed old and we only look upon the earth's cold outer surface. Of one fact we can, however, be sure; the earth was originally part of a much larger and less compact mass, from which came all the other members of the Solar System. The earth is not unique in structure or material. Many of the heavenly bodies that we see in the sky at night are similar to the earth; for the spectroscope shows that some of them are composed of similar materials; some also of the fragments of shooting stars that fall upon the earth consist of the same minerals as the rocks of the earth's crust. Book The Story of Earth and Sky Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Earth and Sky Classic Reprint written by Carleton Washburne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Earth and Sky Studies of children's spontaneous questions show that beginning at about the age of nine and lasting at least until early adolescence, there is a keen interest in the origin of things, in the whys of natural phenomena, and in the stars. Schools nowadays adjust their curricula to such interests, and try to give children that mental food and those activities which are suitable to their stage of development. Hence the story of the earth - its probable origin, its evolution, and its place in the solar system - and the story of the imagination-stretching starry universe are becoming important parts of the course of study in elementary schools and junior high schools. Download or read book The Story of Our Planet Classic Reprint written by T. G. Bonney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Planet IN writing this volume I have not had any intention of attempt ing to add another to the text-books of geology in the English language. Of these there is already an ample supply. Sir A. Geikie's Text-book of Geology, Professor Prestwich's Geology, and the edition of Phillips' Manual of Geology by Professor H. G. Seeley and Mr. R. Etheridge leave no gap to be filled among works of larger size, while a student not yet ripe for these has ample choice among books on smaller scale, which can be arranged in a graduated series from Mr. Jukes-browne's Handbook to the most elementary Primer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Earth's Atmosphere I have desired in the present little work to put forward the main features of our knowledge of the conditions which prevail in our atmosphere as they are interpreted through the science of to day. The Atmosphere, unlike its solid partner, contains no gold or coal mines with which to stimulate scientific research. Its study has con sequently been somewhat neglected until of late years, and is even now only just emerging from the stage of myth and speculation into that of fact and certainty. Download or read book The Romance of the Earth Classic Reprint written by Alexander William Bickerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of the Earth In calling this little reading book a romance it must not be supposed that facts are ignored. I have used all the facts I found available. Most of the statements are the accepted truths, many of them the commonplaces, of science. Where I could not obtain facts, I have permitted myself to speculate, to make deductions from the accepted laws of nature. When I have thus soared on the wings of the imagi nation I hope the flight has not been unscientific, nor the views presented unsound. When I have used those Wings I have kept well Within sight of the reader; he can see every movement that has led me to these conclusions. Sometimes where no path existed I have not dared to soar; I have merely roughed out tracks that I hope will be straightened and metalled and become paths of progress. Where two opposing schools have suggested opposite ways I have not hesitated to use the clue given me by codified science, and have followed fearlessly where the accepted laws of matter and energy have led me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ice Ages: The Story of the Earth's Revolutions IN two earlier little works (the A B C of Evolution and The Evolution of Civilization), of the same very modest proportions as this, I have given an outline of the story of Evolution. It is clear from the large circulation of these simple manuals that they have met a very real want. A good proportion of the workers, for whom in particular I write, feel that science means a new and mighty mental power in the world. They are asking if its broad teaching about man and the universe cannot be made plain to them without the use of learned words which they have not time to study, and without masses of detail which only tire them. Both of these are beautifully modified, so as to suit the different habits of the several species, and adapt them to the climates and the ele ments in which they find their food.
