Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Counties of Ontario The story of the countries of Ontario is a story of conquest - not of men against men - but of men, with little resource save their own strong arms, iron wills and alert intelligence, pitted against wild, beautiful, prolific Nature, and prevailing to subdue the earth. Carving their little farms from "the forest primeval," planting their own towns and cities at the meeting-places of mighty waters, making highways of every lake and river and streamlet deep enough to bear up a birch-bark canoe, our Loyalist "Pilgrim Fathers," many of whom I had been cast out as unworthy by the land of their birth, were privileged, as has often happened with outcasts, to found a new order of things and a new nation. This Province had not, of course, a monopoly of all the Loyalist settlers who came northwards after the revolution, but it had enough to bring it into being with a distinctive character of its own, enough, exclusive of other brave and useful pioneers, to furnish it with heroes - and heroines - for the early days of stress and strain and struggle - those days over which for us hangs the fairy glamour of romance, though few of us would have 5 discovered it had we had to live through them. This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ontario County, New York and Its People, Vol. 1 Whether through some fortuitous but beneficent combination of soil and water and climate, or on account of an advantage of location, or in furtherance of a Divine plan, the people who have possessed Western New York have had a large and important influence on the country as a whole. This was true when Columbus discovered the continent, and a handful of Iroquois savages dominated the whole vast wilderness. It was true during the three centuries that followed when not even the valor of the French at the North, the enterprise of the Dutch at New York, or the chivalry of the Spaniards at the South, with sword, or cross, or coin, could make, progress toward the conquest of the coveted land. It was true when at last New England soldiery, opening the way for New England thrift and New England culture, broke the proud spirit of the Indian confederacy, and when New England from its new vantage ground in the Genesee Country diffused its tongue, its political principles, and its religious faith to the uttermost parts of the land. It is true today, even if what some of the New York papers used to call the "Canandaigua rule" in politics is broken, when a Western New York Congressman makes the tariff law for the country, when the State governs its elections and controls and taxes the liquor traffic under the laws drafted by an Ontario county legislator, when the preachers in famous pulpits, the editors of great metropolitan newspapers, and world-eminent scientists claim Western New York as their birthplace, and when its sons and grandsons, its daughters and granddaughters, it may truthfully be said, play a not insignificant part in shaping the destinies of the Great West. The author of this History of Ontario County has made no attempt to glean the fields which have been covered by preceding writers, or to repeat in detail the story of discovery, settlement, and development. Many others have kindly volunteered their aid, to all of whom we return sincere thanks. When it is known that time, equal to nearly three years' labor, if done by one man, has been devoted to the canvass, and the great difficulty many times experienced by the agents in collecting the necessary information, it is believed the patrons of the work willwillingly excuse any seemingly short-comings in the complete ness of the work. The advertisers in this work represent many of the leading busi ness men of the County, and we most cheerfully commend them all to the patronage of those under whose observation these pages may come. So complete a canvass of a county for a Business Directory, and the additions of farmers' names, together with the number of acres owned or leased by each, the whole arranged alphabetically, after their appropriate post office addresses, we believe has never been attempted by any other publisher. That errors may have occurred in so great a number of names and dates as are here given, is probable. The indulgence of the reader is solicited in marking such as had been observed in the sub sequent reading of the proofs, and which are noted in the Errata, following the Introduction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of Ontario This was the commencement of a friendship which was only closed by his death some years ago. After this chance meeting it was always pleasant to meet dear old Dick in the show ring, at the International, or under the shadow of the Rockies when we made a trip to the Colorado sheep feeding grounds. Among other qualities, he had a facile pen and it ran riot when he got on old days, among English villages, or simple homesteads, with cows that were rich at the pail, or towering castles, forhe was born under the walls of Belvoir where horse, hound and huntsman went merrily forth on winter morn ings to pursue the fox. It is well that he lived in those days; that the glamor hanging round, festooned by gar lands and fairy-like in its rich colors, should have guarded his life from these sad scenes which to-day are written deep in blood on the fields of Flanders or pierce the quiet of some little thatched cottage with its latticed windows and trailing roses amid English meadow lands from whence father or son responded to the call of his country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game Fields of Ontario For a moment I was amazed at the idea of any white citizen ofthe continent grown to years of maturity being so ignorant as not to know that that cereal was one of out staple productions. But on second thought the idea struck home that this was only one incident of many, which goes to show how close neighbours people can be. In fact, be associated to a certain extent in business and other rela tions. Be each persons ot' importance in their own sphere.
