Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Ashantee Campaign As five other books on the Ashantee War have been announced or have already ap peared, the preface to a work on that subject ought to be apologetic and my apology for writing on an over-written subject is this, that it was my fortune to see more fighting than any one else in the Expedition, excepting a few officers in the native regiments. More over no other writer, military or civil, witnessed either of these three events - the storming of Amoaful by the Black Watch the storming of Ordahsu by the Ri e Brigade; or the taking of Coomassie by Sir Archibald Alison and. Book Through Three Campaigns

Download or read book Through Three Campaigns written by G. A. Henty and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Three Campaigns: A Story of Chitral, Tirah, and Ashanti Our little wars attract far less attention among the people of this country than they deserve. They are frequently carried out in circumstances of the most adverse kind. Our enemies, although ignorant of military discipline, are, as a rule, extremely brave, and are thoroughly capable of using the natural advantages of their country. Our men are called upon to bear enormous fatigue and endure extremes in climate; the fighting is incessant, the peril constant. Nevertheless they show a magnificent contempt for danger and difficulty, and fight with a valour and determination worthy of the highest praise. I have chosen as an illustration of this, three campaigns, namely, the relief of Chitral, the Tirah campaign, and the relief of Coomassie. The first two were conducted in a mountainous country affording every advantage to the enemy, where passes had to be scaled, torrents to be forded, and deep snow to be crossed. In the other, the country was a combination of morass and thick forest, frequently intersected by wide and deep rivers. The work, moreover, had to be done in a tropical climate during the rainy season. The conditions, therefore, were much more trying than in the case of former expeditions which had crossed the same ground, and in addition the enemy were vastly more numerous and more determined, and had in recent years mastered the art of building extremely formidable stockades. It was on a cold blustering day in the middle of December, 1894, that, under orders from the Daily T elegrapk, I left Southampton for Madagascar, to go by the Cape of Good Hope route. War had then in effect been declared by the French against the Malagasy. For some occult reason, our Gallic neighbours decided that no Press Correspondents should be permitted to accompany their troops. To be just With them, an excuse for their early reserve was to be found in the darkling hints publicly circulated that the savage character of the enemy and the nature of the enter prise rendered it unwise to have the expeditionary force burdened with non-combatants. It was further given out that even the medical branches of their service would perform their offices of alleviating suffer ing and saving life armed to the teeth. Subsequently, and possibly on the receipt of better information, those fearsome views of the barbarous (p) enemy were con. I had seen Americans fight; I had seen Indians fight. I was glad to have the Opportunity of seeing how Englishmen fought. In Abys sinia I first saw English soldiers prepared for war.
