Download or read book The Underground Railroad in DeKalb County Illinois written by Nancy M. Beasley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about previously unidentified people who became Abolitionists involved in the antislavery movement from about 1840 to 1860. Although arrests were made in nearby counties, not one person was prosecuted for aiding a fugitive slave in DeKalb County, Illinois. First, the area Congregationalist, Universalist, Presbyterian and Wesleyan Methodist churches all had compelling antislavery beliefs. Church members, county elected officials, and the Underground Railroad conductors and stationmasters were all one and the same. Additionally, DeKalb County had the highest concentration of subscriptions to the Chicago-based Western Citizen antislavery newspaper. It was an accepted local activity to help escaped slaves. A biographical dictionary includes evidence and personal information for more than 600 men and women, and their families, who defied the prevailing Fugitive Slave Law, and helped the anti-slavery movement in this one Northern Illinois County. Unique photographs and illustrations are included along with notes, bibliography and index.

Download or read book Hidden Histories in the United Church of Christ written by Barbara Brown Zikmund and published by The Pilgrim Press. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a denomination that reflects the pluralistic story of American Protestantism. Created in 1957, the UCC has brought together ecclesiastical bodies rooted in English Puritanism, American frontier revivalism, and German religious history. In this book, the contributors attempt to move beyond the four main streams of the UCC—the UCC "historical orthodoxy." This collection of essays expands knowledge about the diversity of the UCC, and connects the UCC with many significant developments in American religious and ethnic history. It explores such areas as: Native American Protestantism; black Christian churches; a schism in the German Reformed Church; Armenian congregationalism's missionary beginnings; German congregationalism; blacks and the American Missionary Association; Deaconess ministries; the Schwenkfelders; the Calvin Synod (Hungarian); women's work and women's boards; and Japanese-American Congregationalists. Contributors include Clifford Alika, Percel O. Alston, John Butosi, William G. Chrystal, Clara Merritt DeBoer, Sally A. Dries, Serge F. Hummon, Martha B. Kriebel, Miya Okawara, Ruth W. Rasche, John C. Shetler, Vahan H. Tootikian, and Barbara Brown Zikmund.

Book excerpt: DeKalb was originally known as Huntley's Grove, named after Russell Huntley, an early settler who was one of its founders. The area had also been known as Buena Vista and DeKalb Center, before settling on the name DeKalb in 1881. The name was derived from Baron Johann DeKalb (1721-1780), a German soldier who served under Washington at Valley Forge and died a Revolutionary War hero. Three august DeKalb men are credited with the invention of barbed wire and began manufacturing it in 1873. Today DeKalb is a world leader in hybrid seed development and genetic research, as well as the home of Northern Illinois University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the district conferences of the Mennonite Church have published a history of the beginning and the development of the congregations in their area. Until this work was finished, the South Central Mennonite Conference had not done so. Melvin Gingerich, of the Mennonite General Conference Historical Committee, urged the conference to consider the preparation of a conference history.... This task has been for me a labor of love - telling the story of the people, the places, the churches that I have been interested in throughout the years. My prayer is that this history may be both a memorial to the past and a guide and inspiration to the present and the future. From the Preface by author Paul Erb
