Book Mackinac Island and Sault Ste Marie Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mackinac Island and Sault Ste Marie Classic Reprint written by Stanley Newton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mackinac Island and Sault Ste Marie Concerning this fair North of ours, many books have been written. Its annals have been set down by Carver, LaHontan, Schoolcraft, Jameson, Henry, Perrot, Charlevoix, Joliet, Marquette, and others whose work is shrouded in the mists of time. It has been the scene of self-abnegation such as the world has seldom witnessed; courage almost beyond the ken of mankind; cruelty to chill the soul with horror. It has experienced strange vicissitudes of fortune. It has sustained one of the world's most remarkable and interesting peoples. Its destinies have hung upon threads so slight as to be now almost forgotten. It has known totems innumerable and three mighty nation's flags. Shall we consecrate our lines and compilations to these worthies of old? It is little they care for our words of praise. Or to the Judge, who has gathered their works with loving care, and who every good citizen of the North hopes will be spared for many years, to a life of usefulness and uprightness? Other and better books have been inscribed to him. Or to our next Governor? But he is a writer of books. Sit you down with comfort, my friend, on the shady side of the deck, or wherever you happen to be, and learn of the North. If we diverge from the beaten path here and there, remember that our text is a large one; and that precious stones are sometimes found in the most out of the way places. Fall to, then, with all the anticipation in the world, and may you read with pleasure and profit, for these pages are dedicated to You. Book excerpt: Sault Ste. Marie was destined to be a gathering place. Native Americans relied on the rapids of the St. Mary's River, which links two Great Lakes, Superior and Huron, for a year-round supply of fish. Its population swelled in the summer--a tradition that continued as French traders came to turn in their pelts and celebrate the end of another long, hard winter. After the Revolutionary War, the Sault, as it is called, became a community divided on national lines, with the United States holding one shore and Canada the other. Eventually man conquered the rapids, and today the Soo Locks transport millions of tons of freight annually to ports all over the world. Tourists are drawn by the cool breezes off the lake and the sight of steel behemoths passing almost close enough to touch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pageant of Saint Lusson, Sault Ste, Marie, 1671: An Address Delivered at the Annual Commencement of the University of Michigan, Thursday, June 30, 1892 Men now asked themselves if there might not be at the north some compensating passage. The Span iards had already tracked the northern Shore of the Gulf of Mexico, and though they had noticed the out flow of a great river, there was no lure of gold in that direction, and they left the secret of the Missis sippi to be unfolded by the French from the north a hundred and fifty years later. Book The Silver Island of the Chippewa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Silver Island of the Chippewa Classic Reprint written by D. Lange and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silver Island of the Chippewa Some years ago, as I sailed along the rugged North Shore of Lake Superior, I had my first glimpse of Silver Island. The Duluth and Isle Royale boat had just left Port Arthur on Thunder Bay and was headed for the distant blue ridge of Isle Royale, Michigan, when I sighted an islet a few miles to the left of our course. There it lay, like a fortress guarding the entrance to Thunder Bay, out of which flows the golden stream of Canadian wheat to the markets of far-away lands. No man-of-war and no buccaneer ever tried to capture the great wheat-loading vessels at Fort William and Port Arthur, so why should our peaceful Canadian neighbors build a sea fort under the picturesque wooded rocks of Thunder Cape? An old trapper, who was also going to Isle Royale, knew something about that fortress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
