Book Musical Form Forms Formenlehre

Download or read book Musical Form Forms Formenlehre written by William Earl Caplin and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tone of the debates among Caplin, Hepokoski, and Webster (in the form of comments on each author''s essay and then responses to the comments), though tactful, is obliquely blunt and tendentious; like the best of tennis pros, each author strives to serve an ace and defends the net against a passing shot (with Caplin, the ace is for formal function; with Hepokoski for Sonata Theory and dialogic form; with Webster for multivalent analysis). But we can trust that this provocative exchange will thoroughly invigorate discussions about classical form and encourage diverse approaches to its analys.

Download or read book The Story of Music written by Paul Bekker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Music: An Historical Sketch of the Changes in Musical Form I freely confess that I have chosen the second course, not from any lack of modesty, but because I believe that the presentation of history is a matter less of knowledge than of point of view. For this reason the invitation of the Radio Corporation attracted me particularly, as it gave me the opportunity of testing the soundness of the ideas developed in my book on Wagner and my pamphlet on The Nature of Tone in the larger field of music history as a whole. These lectures, which were given under the title of The History of Change in Music, are here presented in book form. While the title has been changed, the lec ture form has been retained because it gives the original layout of the material. Book The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures

Download or read book The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures written by David Temperley and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, David Temperley addresses a fundamental question about music cognition: how do we extract basic kinds of musical information, such as meter, phrase structure, counterpoint, pitch spelling, harmony, and key from music as we hear it? Taking a computational approach, Temperley develops models for generating these aspects of musical structure. The models he proposes are based on preference rules, which are criteria for evaluating a possible structural analysis of a piece of music. A preference rule system evaluates many possible interpretations and chooses the one that best satisfies the rules. After an introductory chapter, Temperley presents preference rule systems for generating six basic kinds of musical structure: meter, phrase structure, contrapuntal structure, harmony, and key, as well as pitch spelling (the labeling of pitch events with spellings such as A flat or G sharp). He suggests that preference rule systems not only show how musical structures are inferred, but also shed light on other aspects of music. He substantiates this claim with discussions of musical ambiguity, retrospective revision, expectation, and music outside the Western canon (rock and traditional African music). He proposes a framework for the description of musical styles based on preference rule systems and explores the relevance of preference rule systems to higher-level aspects of music, such as musical schemata, narrative and drama, and musical tension.
