Book The Story of Maryland Politics Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Maryland Politics This book does not profess to be a wholly complete political history of Maryland. The data for such a volume cannot be obtained because it does not exist. What I have attempted to do is to tell the political story of the State from the close of the Civil War to the present time, as accurately as possible and without bias. I have tried to give the facts about every political struggle worth telling about; to trace the rise and fall of the political factors in each; to show their relations to each other, the way they played politics and the kind of men they were. I have sought to picture every campaign made in the State since 1864, to give the names of the men nominated for the principal offices and those elected, to show the political causes that swept them in and out of office, the source from which they arrived their power and the way in which they used it. The "inside" and unpublished politics of the many notable fights that have been waged in this State is here given and it has also seemed worth while to compile the names of the men who have represented Maryland in the Legislature and in Congress since 1880, in that there exists no other record of these men, and unless put in a form where they can be preserved, all recollection of them is bound to fade. It has taken nearly two years to gather the data upon which this book is based. In that time I have sought and obtained from men who were in the thick of the fights the information necessary to write the real story of the times. As the political reporter of the Baltimore Sun from 1900 to 1910, I had unusual opportunities for knowing the real politics played between those years. Prior to 1900, my information had to come from others and from the files of the Baltimore newspapers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Maryland Politics and Government

Download or read book Maryland Politics and Government written by Herbert Charles Smith and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tucked between the larger commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia and overshadowed by the political maneuverings of its neighbor, Washington, D.C., Maryland has often been overlooked and neglected in studies of state governmental systems. With the publication of Maryland Politics and Government, the challenging demographic diversity, geographic variety, and dynamic Democratic pragmatism of Maryland finally get their due. Two longtime political analysts, Herbert C. Smith and John T. Willis, conduct a sustained inquiry into topics including the Maryland identity, political history, and interest groups; the three branches of state government; and policy areas such as taxation, spending, transportation, and the environment. Smith and Willis also establish a –Two Marylands” model that explains the dominance of the Maryland Democratic Party, established in the post_Civil War era, that persists to this day even in a time of political polarization. Unique in its scope, detail, and coverage, Maryland Politics and Government sets the standard for understanding the politics of the Free State (or, alternately, the Old Line State) for years to come.

Book Maryland in National Politics

Download or read book Maryland in National Politics written by Jesse Frederick Essary and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland in National Politics This book was written with.the idea of recording in some permanent form the splendid achievements of that group of Maryland patriots, statesmen, diplomatists and jurists who have contributed most to the greatness of the Republic, men whose public services established them as national characters, as contra-distinguished from purely State figures. In no sense is this a history of Maryland, nor is it a history of the United States. It is, however, a faithful presentation of the parts played in the nation's history by those distinguished Marylanders of the past century who helped lay the foundation of this government, who have builded upon that foundation, who have made their country's laws and have had a potential influence in shaping its destiny. In dealing with the careers of these men the hard-and-fast lines of stereotyped biography have, in a measure, been abandoned. Book Sprawl Politics

Download or read book Sprawl Politics written by John W. Frece and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sprawl and Politics is a political history of the origin, enactment, and implementation of Maryland s well-known Smart Growth and Neighborhood Conservation initiative. It is an insider s look at the political pressures and decisions made by Parris N. Glendening, the former governor of Maryland, and his top staff as they worked to enact and implement a new program to manage growth and curtail sprawl. The book traces the evolution of the Smart Growth program from its substantive underpinnings to the political and public relations strategies needed to assure the program s adoption. Known around the country almost immediately after it was enacted, the program s incentive-based approach served as a model for other states struggling with growth pressures but reluctant to regulate land use. With a perspective only a participant could provide, John W. Frece examines the incidents, issues, pressures, and personalities responsible for shaping the program as well as the challenges faced putting the ideas into practice.

Book Political Problems and Personalities in Contemporary Maryland

Download or read book Political Problems and Personalities in Contemporary Maryland written by Theodore F. Sheckels and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Problems and Personalities in Contemporary Maryland provides a comprehensive rhetorical analysis of contemporary politics and political communication in Maryland at both the state and local levels. Theodore F. Sheckels and Carl Hyden approach rhetoric in a broader sense, arguing that actions by political players – including decisions on housing policy, urban redevelopment policy, and transportation policy—are not in a separate category from their messages. In many cases, they argue, actions are messages, often with important material consequences. Rather than focusing solely on previous or upcoming elections, as political communication has traditionally been examined, Sheckels and Hyden give considerable space to non-election topics, responding to current shifts in political communication scholarship and encouraging others to examine political communication at the local and state levels elsewhere in the United States. Scholars of communication, political science, rhetoric, and history will find this book of particular interest.
