Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Storm Birds "Proceed Venice immediately report commanding officer Louisville." The young man in the first-class compartment of the afternoon train from Udine had already committed the words to memory; their first perusal had fixed them indelibly in his mind. But he spread out the slip of paper on which they had been hurriedly scrawled and examined it with an intensity of interest which would have betrayed at once to any onlooker that the message held some hidden meaning which he was striving in vain to penetrate. There were no curious eyes to observe him, however. He was the only passenger in the only firstclass compartment in the train, one of those delightfully inconsequential, dawdling affairs which, in this country, would be labeled "accommodation," or "mixed freight," in the schedules of the railroad, and which, in Europe, not being rated officially as "express," never ruffle the serenity of their slumbrous dignity by moving faster than an excited small dog can run. The solitary first-class passenger was not disturbed, however, by the speed, - or lack of it, - of this train. Very likely you have often seen eagles in the Zoological Gardens, and, if so, you know what noble looking birds they are. But they seem very sad in their prison-houses, to which no kindness can ever attach them. They are formed to soar boldly to the top of some lonely mountain height. Book excerpt: One of the most beloved novels of all time, Colleen McCullough's magnificent saga of dreams, struggles, dark passions, and forbidden love in the Australian outback has enthralled readers the world over. The Thorn Birds is a chronicle of three generations of Clearys—an indomitable clan of ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys' only daughter, Meggie, and the haunted priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart—and the intense joining of two hearts and souls over a lifetime, a relationship that dangerously oversteps sacred boundaries of ethics and dogma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Time of Swallows: 52 American Birds Usually introductions are written to point out to readers the merits of the work they are about to read. Often, however, the merits are more obvious in themselves than they appear in dis cussion. In reading one of these poems you will see a living bird flashing before your eyes among green leaves, hopping delicately on a lawn, or looking out warily from a secret nest - you will hear his call or song and feel you know him intimately. What could I add to this? Only that I am proud to have had something to do with the making of this book. I chose many of these poems for The Washington Post while I was its poetry editor; I encouraged Mae Winkler Goodman to expand a group of a few bird portraits to the considerable series you see here; and then suggested she secure an illustrator and make a book of it. I had not dreamed, I admit, that she would find such an illustrator as William Scheele, at once an ornithologist of distinction and an artist - able, without compromise, to combine scientific accuracy with the intangibles of omission and suggestion and atmosphere that make a picture not merely exact, but real and living. Book Birds of a Feather Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of a Feather Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of a Feather You remember the old proverb, "Birds of a feather flock together"? These stories of the faults and confessions, the lessons and rewards, the mistakes and amendments of children like yourselves, are "birds of a feather" in many respects, and so "flock together" naturally in this little book which I have the pleasure of presenting to you. In respect of age and relationship, and affection for one another, in love of fun, and faculty for mischief, - and also, I think, in many higher and holier faculties, - you are yourselves "birds of a feather." May you always "flock together" for all good and beautiful purposes; encouraging each other's efforts, avoiding each other's faults, sympathizing tenderly in each other's joy and sorrow, until you plume your wings to those upper spheres where "birds of a feather flock together" with endless song and rejoicing. Book Hill Birds of Scotland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hill Birds of Scotland Classic Reprint written by Seton Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hill Birds of Scotland IT must ever be the case that those birds living their quiet lives on the remote and inaccessible hillsides take from their surroundings a certain charm and distinction. It is this charm which renders the studying of these mountain dwellers a pursuit of exceptional interest. Many difficulties are set in the way: the hills do not yield the store of their knowledge easily it is only to him who knows them in storm as in fine weather, and in the dead of winter as well as during long days of June sun light, that they give a measure of their wisdom. The difficulty of investigating bird life on the highest hills is largely due to the absence of any suitable base in their vicinity; thus I would strongly advise any ornithologist who decides on studying the habits of hill birds to procure a good strong tent, which at the same time is not too heavy to be carried to the high corries. At elevations of between three and four thousand feet the main inconvenience to the camper is the low tempera tures which are experienced after sunset, and a plentiful supply of rugs are a necessity if a night's rest is sought for. During the months of June and July brilliant weather frequently prevails on the high tops, and even at mid night the afterglow in the north is sufficiently strong to render impossible the changing of photographic plates unless the operator first covers himself with rugs. These days of early summer, spent at the homes of the Snow Bunting and the Ptarmigan, are retained in the mind's eye for long. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Months With the Birds and Poets This study of birds and poets is divided into twelve chapters, one for each month of the year, beginning with April, the opening of the birds' year. The birds are discussed in the month most appropriate to them by reason of habits of nesting, migration or other distinguishing characteristics. This plan enables the reader to live through the year with the birds, and to learn when to look for them. The observations were made in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, and the book may be used as a safe guide for the study of the more common birds of this latitude from the Rocky Mountains east to the Atlantic seaboard.
