Download or read book Cumbria s Prehistoric Monuments written by Adam Morgan Ibbotson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it is Hadrian's Wall, Kendal Castle or the beautiful fells of the Lake District – for thousands of years people have found a certain elegance and utility in stone. Nestled amongst these common relics are a multitude of massive stone monuments, built over 3,000 years before British shores were ever touched by Roman sandals. Cumbria's 'megalithic' monuments are among Europe's greatest and best-preserved ancient relics but are often poorly understood and rarely visited. Cumbria's Prehistoric Monuments aims to dispel the idea that these stones are merely 'mysterious'. Instead, within this book you will find credible answers, using up-to-date research, excavation notes, maps and diagrams to explore one of Britain's richest archaeological landscapes. Featuring stunning original photography and newly illustrated diagrams of every megalithic site in the county, Adam Morgan Ibbotson invites you to take a journey into a land sculpted by ancient hands.

Book The Bronze and Early Iron Ages in Estonia

Download or read book The Bronze and Early Iron Ages in Estonia written by V. Lang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses social, economic, and cultural processes during the Bronze and Early Iron Ages (18th century BC - 5th century AD) in what is today Estonia. The above period between the Stone Age (ca. 9000-1800 BC) and the Middle Iron Age (AD 450-800) was an era of significant and crucial developmental processes. The final transition from a foraging to a farming economy occurred during that time and resulted in an extensive settlement shift from suitable hunting and fishing places to agricultural lands. In relation to the above processes, the general settlement pattern changed, and the agricultural household as the main settlement unit became prevalent. Social relations also changed, which contributed to the development of stratified societies, at first mainly in coastal Estonia and later throughout continental Estonia. Significant developments took place both in material and intellectual culture. By the end of the period the Estonian areas had changed beyond recognition compared to what they had been at the beginning of the period.

Book Stone Vessels and Values in the Bronze Age Mediterranean

Download or read book Stone Vessels and Values in the Bronze Age Mediterranean written by Andrew Bevan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-08-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The societies that developed in the eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age produced the most prolific and diverse range of stone vessel traditions known at any time or anywhere in the world. Stone vessels are therefore a key class of artefact in the early history of this region. As a form of archaeological evidence, they offer important analytical advantages over other artefact types - virtual indestructibility, a wide range of functions and values, huge variety in manufacturing traditions, as well as the subtractive character of stone and its rich potential for geological provenancing. In this 2007 book, Andrew Bevan considers individual stone vessel industries in great detail. He also offers a highly comparative and value-led perspective on production, consumption and exchange logics throughout the eastern Mediterranean over a period of two millennia during the Bronze Age (ca.3000–1200 BC).

Book Bronze Age Metalworking in the Netherlands c 2000 800 BC

Download or read book Bronze Age Metalworking in the Netherlands c 2000 800 BC written by M. H. G. Kuijpers and published by Sidestone Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost fifty years ago J. J. Butler started his research to trace the possible remains of a Bronze Age metalworker's workshop in the Netherlands. Yet, while metalworking has been deduced on the ground of the existence of regional types of axes and some scarce finds related to metalworking, the smith's workplace has remained elusive. In this Research Master Thesis I have tried to tackle this problem. I have considered both the social as well as the technological aspects of metalworking to be able to determine conclusively whether metalworking took place in the Netherlands or not. The first part of the thesis revolves around the social position of the smith and the social organization of metalworking. My approach entails a re-evaluation of the current theories on metalworking, which I believe to be unfounded and one-sided. They tend to disregard production of everyday objects of which the most prominent example is the axe. The second part deals with the technological aspects of metalworking and how these processes are manifested in the archaeological record. Based on evidence from archaeological sites elsewhere in Europe and with the aid of experimental archaeology a metalworking toolkit is constructed. Finally, a method is presented which might help archaeologists recognize the workplace of a Bronze Age smith.

Book The History Detective Investigates Stone Age to Iron Age

Download or read book The History Detective Investigates Stone Age to Iron Age written by Clare Hibbert and published by Wayland. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find out all about the first Britons, nomadic hunter-gatherers who came from mainland Europe to settle in England bringing wooden spears, flint handaxes and animals with them. Stone Age to Iron Age tells the story of how these people settled and began farming the land. They built villages of timber and stone houses such as Skara Brae on Orkney. Stonehenge is perhaps the most famous monument of this period, a technological marvel of the time built by raising over 80 blue stones to create the 'henge'. The Bronze Age bought with it metalworking using copper, tin and gold to make tools and beautiful everyday objects. The Iron Age was known for its hill forts, farming and art and culture. Contains maps, paintings, artefacts and photographs to show how early Britons lived. Ideally suited for readers age 8+ or teachers who are looking for books to support the new curriculum for 2014.
