Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. T. Russell Originally published in the journal Space Science Reviews, Volume 136, Nos 1–4. DOI: 10. 1007/s11214-008-9344-1 © Springer Science+Business Media B. V. 2008 The Sun-Earth Connection is now an accepted fact. It has a signi cant impact on our daily lives, and its underpinnings are being pursued vigorously with missions such as the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory, commonly known as STEREO. This was not always so. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that Edward Sabine connected the 11-year geomagnetic cycle with Heinrich Schwabe’s deduction of a like periodicity in the sunspot record. The clincher for many was Richard Carrington’s sighting of a great whi- light are on the Sun, on September 1, 1859, followed by a great geomagnetic storm 18 hours later. But was the Sun-Earth Connection signi cant to terrestrial denizens? Perhaps in 1859 it was not, but a century later it became so. Beginning in the 1930’s, as electrical powergrids grew in size, powercompanies began to realize that they occasionally had power blackouts during periods of intense geomagnetic activity. This correlation did not appear to be suf ciently signi cant to bring to the attention of the public but during the International Geophysical Year (IGY), when geomagnetic activity was being scrutinized intensely, the occurrence of a large North American power blackout during a great magnetic storm was impossible to ignore.

Book The STEREO Mission A Three Dimensional View of the Sun and Heliosphere

Download or read book The STEREO Mission A Three Dimensional View of the Sun and Heliosphere written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are massive outflows of material from the Sun's corona, traveling into the surrounding heliosphere at speeds up to 1000-2000 kilometers per second. When directed toward the Earth, CMEs can result in damage to satellites, enhanced auroral displays, blackouts of power grids on Earth, and interference with surface radio communications. The first CME detected from space was observed by an NRL coronagraph onboard the Seventh Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO-7) in December 1971. Much of our recent knowledge of CMEs has been obtained from an NRL visible-light coronagraph (LASCO, the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph(2)) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, launched in 1995. But SOHO observes from only one viewpoint, leaving three-dimensional structure ambiguous for individual CMEs. The next step beyond SOHO is the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission, consisting of two spacecraft observing the Sun from two different viewpoints, allowing a three-dimensional view of the initiation of CMEs and their propagation outwards. In addition, STEREO will carry a new type of heliospheric coronagraph that is off-pointed from the solar disk, and can observe from the side the Sun-Earth line all the way out to Earth. The STEREO mission is meant to increase our understanding of such topics as solar structures and their properties involved in CME initiation; threedimensional structure and kinematics of CMEs; three-dimensional structure of active regions, coronal loops, and streamers; propagation of CMEs into the corona and interplanetary medium; and the effects of CMEs through the heliosphere to the Earth.

Download or read book Mission Moon 3 D written by David J. Eicher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the lunar landing and the events that led up to it, told in text and visually stunning 3-D images. July 2019 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Apollo 11's epochal lunar landing, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon. This visually rich book offers a new perspective on that historic accomplishment, telling the story of the lunar landing and the events that led up to it with text and 3-D images. A 3D viewer, designed by astrophysicist (and lead guitarist with the rock group Queen) Brian May is included with the book. Mission Moon 3-D offers unique access to the Apollo astronauts and what they saw. It tells the story of the US-Soviet space race, from Sputnik and the space dog Laika to Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy declared that America would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong guided the Eagle to a safe landing on the edge of the moon's Sea of Tranquility. President Richard Nixon told the astronauts, and the nation, that it was “the greatest week in the history of the world since the Creation.” Mission Moon 3-D recounts all this and more in memorable and visually stunning fashion.

Book Principles of Timekeeping for the Near and Stereo Spacecraft

Download or read book Principles of Timekeeping for the Near and Stereo Spacecraft written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the details of the inherently different timekeeping systems for two interplanetary missions, the NEAR Shoemaker mission to orbit the near-Earth asteroid 433 Eros and the STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) mission to study and characterize solar coronal mass ejections. It also reveals the surprising dichotomy between two major categories of spacecraft timekeeping systems with respect to the relationship between spacecraft clock resolution and accuracy. The paper is written in a tutorial style so that it can be easily used as a reference for designing or analyzing spacecraft timekeeping systems. Cooper, Stanley B. and Wolff, J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Edition of The Sun from Space, completed in 1999, focused on the early accomplishments of three solar spacecraft, SOHO, Ulysses, and Yohkoh, primarily during a minimum in the Sun’s 11-year cycle of magnetic activity. The comp- hensive Second Edition includes the main ndings of these three spacecraft over an entire activity cycle, including two minima and a maximum, and discusses the signi cant results of six more solar missions. Four of these, the Hinode, RHESSI, STEREO, and TRACE missions were launched after the First Edition was either nished or nearly so, and the other two, the ACE and Wind spacecraft, extend our investigations from the Sun to its varying input to the Earth. The Second Edition does not contain simple updates or cosmetic patch ups to the material in the First Edition. It instead contains the relevant discoveries of the past decade, integrated into chapters completely rewritten for the purpose. This provides a fresh perspective to the major topics of solar enquiry, written in an enjoyable, easily understood text accessible to all readers, from the interested layperson to the student or professional.
