Book The Status of Women in Utah Politics

Download or read book The Status of Women in Utah Politics written by Susan Madsen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for American Progress recently released a report titled, "The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation."1 This September 2013 document ranked Utah last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. The focus was on both the percentage of women in elected office (state and national levels) and also women holding private sector management positions, but it did not provide the depth needed to fully understand the issue. To provide leaders and residents with more detailed research, four 2014 briefs will be released that compare Utah with national data on the status of women and leadership in politics, education, nonprofit, and business. This first brief will focus on the status of women in Utah politics and will provide data for the following five areas: Congress, Statewide Executive Offices, State Legislatures, Mayors, and Voter Participation. It will conclude with a discussion focused on understanding why more women do not run for public office and offer suggestions on how Utah can move the needle in future years.

Book The Status of Women in Utah Business

Download or read book The Status of Women in Utah Business written by Susan Madsen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2013, the Center for American Progress re-leased a report titled "The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Na-tion."1 This report ranks Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women holding positions of decision making and leadership. The report focuses solely on the percentage of women in elected office and private sector management positions. To promote understanding and action, we provide a more de-tailed look at the status of women in leadership in various sectors in Utah. This is the last of four 2014 briefs, each of which compares national data with Utah data and provides a pertinent literature review. The first three provide data on women leaders in Utah politics, nonprofit organizations, and higher and public education institutions. This brief focuses on the status of women leaders in Utah business. More specifi-cally, it provides data regarding the gender of top company leaders (e.g., CEOs, presidents, or lead managers) and the corporate board chair and members. But first we highlight details about the Utah study we conducted.

Book The Status of Women and Entrepreneurship in Utah

Download or read book The Status of Women and Entrepreneurship in Utah written by Susan R. Madsen and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Utah a good place for women to start and run businesses? You may be misled if you rely on what the media has been reporting the past few years about women in Utah. A host of state rankings has continually put Utah as one of the worst states in the nation for women. For example, Utah did not fare well in the WalletHub's recent "2015's Best and Worst States for Women's Equality."1 Utah was also included in the New York Post's "5 Places Women Shouldn't Spend Their Travel Dollars,"2 and in 2014 Utah was ranked as the worst state for women on the "10 Worst States for Women" list at 24/7Wallst.com.3 In addition, Utah did poorly in the Center for American Progress report, "The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women are Faring Across the Nation."4 Although it is clear that we need to improve the representation of women in leadership and decision-making roles, in the gender wage gap, and in funding for programs and efforts that support the well-being of Utah women, 5 these rankings were based on limited criteria. However, one area not included in these criteria that would have strengthened Utah rankings is women and entrepreneurship

Book The Socioeconomic Status of Women in Utah

Download or read book The Socioeconomic Status of Women in Utah written by Eva Rinaldi and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The socioeconomic status of women in Utah and the complexities of the culture in which they live were examined to provide a theoretical understanding of issues impacting a woman's ability to be self-sufficient. Areas of focus included delving into women's education and poverty levels, wage disparities, women's physical safety, and retirement status. Ideology within the conservative LDS religious community was studied to develop an understanding of the political and cultural environment that in which Utah women live. Data was collected through statistical data, interviews with community leaders, observations of the Utah legislature, and by attending events related to women's issues. Findings indicate that there is no progressive feminist group in Utah advocating for broad based issues pertaining directly to women, and that the conservative, patriarchal culture is reflected in policies and attitudes within the legislative body. Themes in the data identified the importance of women's education and financial health to obtaining socioeconomic well-being and security throughout all stages of life. Implications of findings highlight the need for a progressive organization to champion the need for women to be highly educated, to have the ability to be financially independent whether they work outside the home or stay home to raise a family, to become educated about their sexuality and to have the freedom to choose their reproductive destiny, to be politically active, and to expect equality in the home and the workplace."--author's abstract.

Book The Status of Women Leaders in Utah Education

Download or read book The Status of Women Leaders in Utah Education written by Susan Madsen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September of 2013, the Center for American Progress re-leased a report titled "The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Na-tion."1 The report ranked Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women holding positions of decision making and leadership. Because the focus was solely on the percentage of women in elected office and private sector management positions, we determined that a more detailed look at the status of women and leadership in various sectors within the state would be useful. This is the third of four 2014 briefs, and it focuses on the status of women leaders in Utah education (higher and public K-12). The previous briefs highlighted data on women in Utah politics and nonprofit organizations, and the remain-ing one will focus on business. Each compares Utah data with national data and reviews applicable literature.
