Book Caspian Energy Politics

Download or read book Caspian Energy Politics written by Indra Overland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caspian Energy Politics analyses the role of oil and gas in the development of the three main petroleum exporters in the Caspian region - Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan - and how energy resources influence interactions with semi-authoritarian Russia and China. Due to volatile commodity prices and competition for the resources in and around the Caspian Sea, the governments of these petroleum-exporters face a series of difficult decisions. These governments have sought to balance short-term incentives to spend oil revenues as a means to maintain power against the need for a long-term strategy for managing these assets, choices which have further implications for how these countries align themselves internationally. By illuminating important linkages between domestic and international dynamics in these states, the book provides a fresh perspective on energy politics and the impact of petroleum on the development of the Caspian petroleum producers. Expert contributors from Central Asia and the South Caucasus and international scholars provide context-specific insights into the incentives affecting decision-makers that can provide a foundation for strategies to help the countries in the region overcome the negative effects of reliance on oil and gas. As such, the book will be a valuable tool for business actors seeking to understand the role of Chinese and Russian companies in the region, as well as local and international policymakers and non-governmental organisations.

Book The Caspian Sea Chessboard

Download or read book The Caspian Sea Chessboard written by Carlo Frappi and published by EGEA spa. This book was released on 2014-10-02T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuck in the middle of different as well as relevant regional complexes, the Caspian Sea basin represents a critical geopolitical hub in the heart of Eurasia landmass. Political, economic as well as strategic considerations contribute to determine the systemic relevance of the Caspian Sea, whose reputation in the West is mainly linked to the vast availability of largely untapped oil and gas resources. However, behind the fierce competition aimed at the exploitation and transportation of the basin’s hydrocarbons lies a much more complex picture, consisting of interlinked legal, military and soft power issues and threats. Aim of the volume – result of a joint research project conducted by the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SAM, Baku) and the Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI, Milan) – is to address the relevance of the Caspian Sea in the post-bipolar international system, analyzing both soft and had security threats emerging form the basin, as well as the policies of littoral and extra-regional actors.

Book The Legal Status of the Caspian Sea

Download or read book The Legal Status of the Caspian Sea written by Barbara Janusz-Pawletta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the legal and economic situation concerning the removal and allocation of natural resources in the Caspian Sea – the largest enclosed body of salt water in the world, which not only constitutes a fragile ecosystem with tremendous fishery resources, but is also rich in oil and gas deposits. After more than 20 years of negotiations, the five littoral states signed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea in August 2018. This book investigates whether this long-awaited agreement may pave a way forward for the sustainable and peaceful development of the Caspian region. The newly introduced regulations on the delimitation of the boundaries, on the Caspian Sea’s natural resources (especially its fossil fuels) and on the transport of goods by shipping and submarine pipelines, are of utmost importance for the successful participation of the Caspian states in global markets. In addition to a detailed analysis of the Convention, the book offers an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the historical background and current status of issues that are of critical importance for the region’s development and security.

Book Constructive Competition in the Caspian Sea Region

Download or read book Constructive Competition in the Caspian Sea Region written by Agha Bayramov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caspian Sea region has hitherto largely been investigated from a `New Great Game’ perspective that depicts the region as a geopolitical battleground between regional and external great powers, where tensions have been exacerbated by the sea’s rich natural resources, strategic location, and legal disagreements over its status. This book, by contrast, portrays a new image of the region, which still acknowledges the difficulties and problematic starting situation of power politics there. It, however, seeks to show that there are ways forward by identifying mechanisms and means to transform the `New Great Game’ into processes of functional co-operation. Drawing on theoretical insights from a functionalist framework, this book examines three intertwined case studies, namely the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline (BTC), the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), and the Caspian Environmental Program (CEP). It shows that lessons learned from environmental co-operation have influenced the discussion over the uncertain legal status of the sea, which culminated in the signing in 2018 of the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea. This book analyzes the three phases of the BTC and the SGC projects: the planning of the pipeline, its construction, and its use, none of which have been adequately addressed yet. This book illustrates the increasing role of actors beyond and besides the states in the Caspian Sea region, such as transnational corporations, non-governmental organizations, and intergovernment organizations.

Book Pipeline Politics and Natural Gas Supply from Azerbaijan to Europe

This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sevinj Amirova-Mammadova explores pipeline dynamics and natural gas supply within the southern gas corridor and provides an analysis of how policy interests and decisions of the state actors affect the current energy politics in the Caspian region. The research period covers the second stage of the Caspian energy development determined by the production and export of natural gas to the European markets. The focal point of the policy analysis lies on the competition among the different pipeline projects, namely NABUCCO, ITGI, TAP, SEEP, and the decision‐making process of the export route selection. Energy interests of Turkey, Russia, and Azerbaijan elaborated in the research explain how and why certain decisions have been made by these major regional actors.

Book Oil and Geopolitics in the Caspian Sea Region

Download or read book Oil and Geopolitics in the Caspian Sea Region written by Bülent Aras and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-12-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opening of the Caspian Sea basin to Western investment following the breakup of the Soviet Union produced a major contest for access to the region's vast energy reserves on the part of powers as close as Russia, Turkey, and Iran, and as far away as Japan and the United States. Indeed, the struggle to exploit Caspian oil has been one of the most monumental geopolitical developments of the post-Cold War era as external powers vie for political, economic, and military influence in a region brimming not only with oil, but also with ethnic conflicts and historical animosities. The coming decade of rapidly increasing demand for energy will ensure the continued interest and engagement of external powers with often competing geopolitical agendas. Thus the geopolitical developments spawned by the opening of the Caspian Sea are likely to continue to far outweigh the actual impact of Caspian oil on world energy markets. This collection of essays by prominent scholars and international experts offers several important and often conflicting interpretations of the events unfolding along the shores of the world's oldest oil-producing region.
