Book The Structure of World History

Download or read book The Structure of World History written by Kojin Karatani and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major, paradigm-shifting work, Kojin Karatani systematically re-reads Marx's version of world history, shifting the focus of critique from modes of production to modes of exchange. Karatani seeks to understand both Capital-Nation-State, the interlocking system that is the dominant form of modern global society, and the possibilities for superseding it. In The Structure of World History, he traces different modes of exchange, including the pooling of resources that characterizes nomadic tribes, the gift exchange systems developed after the adoption of fixed-settlement agriculture, the exchange of obedience for protection that arises with the emergence of the state, the commodity exchanges that characterize capitalism, and, finally, a future mode of exchange based on the return of gift exchange, albeit modified for the contemporary moment. He argues that this final stage—marking the overcoming of capital, nation, and state—is best understood in light of Kant's writings on eternal peace. The Structure of World History is in many ways the capstone of Karatani's brilliant career, yet it also signals new directions in his thought.

Book Geopolitics of the World System

Download or read book Geopolitics of the World System written by Saul Bernard Cohen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cohen argues that the emergence of the United States as the world's sole superpower and the process of globalization have failed to remove the importance of geography as a political and strategic factor of great import. After laying out the structural basis for his theory of geopolitical theory, he launches into an examination of how geopolitical realities have developed since World War II, a period that witnessed greater change than the preceding two and a half centuries. He then turns his attention to the meat of the book, separate examinations of the each of the major world regions, including examinations of the important countries and their individual geopolitical realities.

Book excerpt: Tracking Capital introduces new ways to understand the entanglement of cultural forms and practices in economic, social, and ecological crises and struggles. Building on the fundamental insights of world-systems analysis, the book offers readers a series of rubrics, keywords, and concepts—such as zemiperiphery, registration, and commodity chains—to enable more integrated, transdisciplinary methods of literary and cultural study. Throughout, Sharae Deckard, Michael Niblett, and Stephen Shapiro foreground the role of culture in both consolidating and contesting the classism, racism, sexism, and ecocide constitutive of the modern world-system. In the context of capitalism's ongoing bloody war against the poor, the powerless, and the planet, Tracking Capital provides tools with which to diagnose the morbid symptoms of the present, as well as to plot possible steps on the road to a better future.

Download or read book The World System in 2025 written by Michael Ferendinos and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - Political Theory and the History of Ideas Journal, grade: A, Stellenbosch Universitiy, course: Comparative Political Economy, 20 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The primary aim of this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of the manner in which important current trends will shape the future of the division of labour and the world system as a whole. The implications of the major political (loss of sovereignty), technological, cultural (globalisation vs. identity), environmental (population growth) and economic trends that the current generation faces will be considered; thereafter looking at its impact on the global division of labour. This will be followed by a thorough analysis of what the nature and structure of the world system will look like in 2025. The paper will end off with a prediction of what the balance of power in the system will be around this time, looking at several candidates for possible hegemony. The argument posed in this essay is that the world system is undergoing a transitional phase, whereby the system could potentially collapse and be replaced by another one, although this is not likely to occur as early as 2025. The other argument is that the ushering in of a new hegemon is a lengthy process, one that will probably not have taken root by this time; thus 2025 will almost certainly be characterized by a multipolar system. ...]

Book Action and Reaction in the World System

Download or read book Action and Reaction in the World System written by Thierry de Montbrial and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book occupies the same niche as Raymond Aron’s 1962 classic, Peace and War. While Aron wrote during the Cold War, Thierry de Montbrial writes about the post-Soviet international system, a system that is multipolar, ideologically heterogeneous, and thus highly unstable. In this book, he lays the foundation for a praxeology, or a “science of action,” to facilitate a better understanding of the dynamics of international problems and a more systematic approach to policy making. A major contribution to international relations theory and winner of the 2002 Georges Pompidou Prize, this book offers the necessary keys to decrypt the international system in the 21st century.
