Book excerpt: Indian Airlines Corporation is the second largest domestic airline in terms of passenges carried outside the United States. Though some studies on air transportationin India have been undertaken, they are neither comprehensive nor systematic. Besides, several problems faced by it are coming to surface in recent times. Frequent hikes in passenger fares without correspondign improvement of efficiency, unreliability of services owing mainly to delays and cancellations of flights, accidents and inadequate fleet due to resource constraints are some of the important problems which call for a searching enquiry into the performance of Indian Airlines. The present study is preceded by a brief review of the existing research and literature on different aspects of air transportationin India and the world witha focus on matters like evolution, history, costs and revenues, pattern of traffic, demand and supply, safety and allied matters. This is followed by the discussion tracing the history and trends of civil aviation in India and also gives an account of various institutions both Indian and non-Indian working towards its healthy growth.

Book The Aeroplane and the Making of Modern India

Download or read book The Aeroplane and the Making of Modern India written by Aashique Ahmed Iqbal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From airports crowded with refugees desperate to flee Partition violence to the mountainous battlefields of Kashmir, aircraft proved indispensable to newly independent India. The aeroplane played a small but significant role in India's transformation from a British colony to an independent republic. Through the prism of aviation, both civil and military, 'The Aeroplane and the Making of Modern India' charts India's journey from the Second World War to the nationalization of Indian airline companies in 1953. For independent India, the aeroplane represented not only a powerful means of projecting state power but also a symbol of what it meant to be modern. This was not lost on other contenders for sovereignty in South Asia. Both Pakistan and the Indian princes also invested extensively in aviation in the hopes of bolstering their power and legitimacy in South Asia. Drawing on numerous archives, untapped personal collections, and newspaper reports in India and the United Kingdom, Aashique Iqbal provides the first comprehensive history of the Indian state's engagement with aviation. Featuring a rich cast of characters including Indian maharajas, Polish pilots, American entrepreneurs, Australian adventurers, and British Air Force officers, this book tells the story of how the aeroplane helped make modern India.

Book The Principles and Practice of International Aviation Law

Download or read book The Principles and Practice of International Aviation Law written by Brian F. Havel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Principles and Practice of International Aviation Law provides an introduction to, and demystification of, the private and public dimensions of international aviation law. Unlike other global sectors, the air transport industry is not governed by a discrete area of the law, but by disparate transnational regulatory instruments. Everything from the routes that an international air carrier can serve to the acquisition of its fleet and its liability to passengers and shippers for incidents arising from its operations can be the object of bilateral and multilateral treaties that represent diverse and often contradictory interests. Beneath this are hundreds of domestic regulatory regimes that also apply national and international rules in disparate ways. The result is an agglomeration of legal cultures that can leave even experienced lawyers and academics perplexed. By combining classical doctrinal analysis with insights from newer disciplines such as international relations and economics, the book maps international aviation law's complex terrain for new and veteran observers alike.

Book Evolution of International Aviation

Download or read book Evolution of International Aviation written by Dawna L. Rhoades and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is twofold. First, it lays out the forces that shaped the international aviation industry and that changed all the rules in the drive for liberalization. Second, it looks at the many interesting and difficult choices ahead that the airline industry in general and the international aviation industry in particular face. These choices include many dichotomies: pulling back from the trend toward liberalization or embracing the liberalization trend, merging in search of profitability or fragmenting the industry in search of economies. These possible futures are explored including the pros and cons of each future from a national, consumer, employer, and employee perspective. As with the previous two editions, Evolution of International Aviation reviews the historical development of the international aviation system. From this foundation it then provides an updated and expanded account of the current state of the aviation and aerospace industry including profitability, consolidation, and merger activity. New to this edition, the book broadens the coverage of the industry segments - airlines, air cargo, and manufacturing - to include the emerging commercial space sector. It also emphasizes the relationship between aviation and the political process, exploring the sustainability of this mode of transportation in a world of climate change, high oil prices, and political instability. Because this book is intended for both the interested amateur and the more serious student, references are provided in the text and at the end of each chapter to allow for further in-depth study. The third edition also adds to each chapter a set of learning objectives and a concluding series of questions for discussion.

Designed for the next generation of aviation professionals, Fundamentals of International Aviation, second edition, flips the traditional approach to aviation education. Instead of focusing on one career in one country, it introduces readers to the air transport sector on a global scale with a broad view of all the interconnected professional groups. This text provides a foundation of ‘how aviation works’ in preparation for any career in the field (including regulators, maintenance engineers, pilots, flight attendants, airline and airport managers, dispatchers, and air traffic controllers, among many others). Each chapter introduces a different cross-section of the industry, from air law to operations, security to environmental impacts. A variety of learning tools are built into each chapter, including 24 case studies that describe an aviation accident related to each topic. This second edition adds new learning features, geographic representation from Africa, a new chapter on economics, full-color illustrations, and updated and enhanced online resources. This accessible and engaging textbook provides a foundation of industry awareness that will support a range of aviation careers. It also offers current air transport professionals an enriched understanding of the practices and challenges that make up the rich fabric of international aviation.
