Book The State and Charity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The State and Charity Classic Reprint written by Thomas Macky and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State and Charity At this point the narrative pauses, and, in Chapters VIII. And IX., an attempt is made to exhibit, so to speak, a section of the sphere of action covered by the charitable instincts of mankind. As a practical man, the English citizen must realise that in this country there exist, side by side, legal and voluntary agencies for relief, and he is called on to regulate this co-ordinate jurisdiction in the light of sound theory and experience. Apart from the statement of fact contained in these two chapters, it has been the object of the Author to set out rather than decide the issues of a controversy which branches out into almost every phase of human activity. Judgment cannot be passed by this genera tion on constructive experiments which it has itself devised: if the Author has succeeded in suggesting the points on which the verdict must turn, he has realised the limit of his ambition. Book The Faith of Charity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Faith of Charity Classic Reprint written by Charles C. Everett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Charity Charity believeth all things. A dupe, is it? I ask you which is the greater dupe, the charity that believes all things, or the selfishness that believes nothing? There are knaves in the world, there are superstitions in the world, there are deceivers and deceived; but one who lives as if these were all loses the good and invites the evil. Before the cold gaze of suspicion, hearts close them selves as the sensitive ower closes beneath the cloud. What a bright, pleasant world it is, quoth the sun. What a dark, cold world it is, answered the cloud. Men, to a large extent, make their own world, as the sun and the cloud make theirs. The over-suspiclous man in the world is like a man who in a crowd keeps clapping his hand on his pocketbook to see if it is safe he invites the pickpockets. Over-suspicion stimulates fraud; it invites neglect and injury. Over-suspicion in religion invites delusion, - either the delusion of superstition, which is often a repressed religious instinct claiming its rights, or the delusion of materialism. Many of them he has known per sonally. Conferences are held with applicants both at the oflice of the society and in their own homes. The necessity for aiding agents and visitors to reach practical conclusions on the more serious questions arising in their treatment of families, such as the initiation of proceedings on grounds of insanity, the commitment of children to institutions because of the destitution of parents, or the provision of a pension for aged persons, have given a 'familiarity with details which will often correct or modify con clusions based upon written records and statistics of a general nature. Book How to Help

Download or read book How to Help written by Mary Conyngton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Help: A Manual of Practical Charity In the three years since this book was first offered to the public, there has been a little change in the principles and methods of organized charity. More and more the emphasis has been laid on preventive work. The provision of large funds for purposes of investigation has made it possible to learn where prevention is needed and how it can be effected, while the growing closeness of cooperation between the different forces of philanthropy and reform has rendered practicable large social movements which ten years ago would have been regarded as purely chimerical. There has been a general and most desirable forward movement, but the stress has been laid rather on social justice than on philanthropy or charity. Hence it has not been necessary to make material changes in the subject matter of this book. Some chapters have received considerable additions; wherever the point of view has changed the latest opinions have been given; and the book as a whole has been carefully revised. Its general character, however, has been preserved unaltered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
