Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Hilton's The Scale of Perfection maintains a secure place among the major religious treatises composed in fourteenth-century England. This guide to the contemplative life, written in two books of more than 40,000 words each, is notable for its careful explorations of its religious themes and also as a monument of Middle English prose. Its popularity is attested by the fact that some forty-two manuscripts containing one or both of the books survive, with a relatively large number of manuscipts with Book I alone, which suggests it may have been the more popular of the two. Hilton (born c. 1343) was a member of the religious order known as the Augustinian Canons. There is reason to believe that be was trained in canon law and studied at the University of Cambridge. He was the author of a number of works in English and Latin, all much shorter than The Scale. He died at the Augustinian Priory of Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire in 1396. On the basis of the content of certain of his works it can be safely inferred that he was actively involved in some of the religious controversies current in England in the 1380s and 1390s, and his principal concern, evident in The Scale , is to defend orthodox belief, especially in the conduct of the contemplative life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Thérèse of Lisieux sought a new way to Heaven: “a little way that is quite straight, quite short: a completely new little way.” Blessed with personal limitations that might have discouraged another, Thérèse believed God would not have given her a desire for holiness if He did not intend for her to achieve it. She learned to humbly accept herself as she was and trust completely in God’s love. First given as a retreat by renowned author Father Jacques Philippe, The Way of Trust and Love navigates excerpts of St. Thérèse’s writings phrase by phrase, extracting powerful, resonating insights. To Thérèse, the journey seemed “little” as she traveled it. A hundred and fifteen years after her death, the message of the young saint and Doctor of the Church has traveled around the world inspiring millions. With this newly translated study of her spirituality, many today will rediscover—or find for the first time—the relevance of “the little way,” in all seasons of life. Fr. Jacques Philippe is well-known for his books on prayer and spirituality. A member of the Community of the Beatitudes, he regularly preaches retreats in France and abroad. He also spends much of his time giving spiritual direction and working for the development of the Community in Asia and Oceania where he travels frequently. View Fr. Book excerpt: Spontaneous generation of living organisms-life arising without progenitor or seed-was a common belief in the time of Aristotle. Over the next two thousand years, support for spontaneous generation slowly retreated to its final stronghold: spontaneous formation of the first living organism. From recently acquired insights into the complexity of the simplest organisms, Tan and Stadler specify requirements for spontaneous formation of life and evaluate the prospects for natural processes to satisfy these requirements. The Stairway to Life is a thought-provoking inquiry that breaches the final stronghold of spontaneous generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thérèse of Lisieux has been called the greatest saint of modern times, but some view her spirituality as sentimental and syrupy. Joseph F. Schmidt, FSC, dispels that notion by contending that Thérèse’s “little way” is really the gospel message—a message that can best be understood in the context of her life. Schmidt does a masterful job of weaving together biographical details with Thérèse’s profound insights on God’s love and mercy. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants an introduction to Thérèse’s spirituality as well as for those who desire a deeper appreciation of her “little way”—a way that continues to speak to Catholics today. Includes photographs of Thérèse as a young girl and throughout her life.

Book The Stairway To Freedom

Download or read book The Stairway To Freedom written by Bob Sanders and published by Geared2U. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, The Stairway To Freedom, was dictated from the spirit world by The Great White Brotherhood and is a complete primer of esoteric knowledge covering virtually every aspect of a human being’s development whilst here in incarnation and also will see ones life into in the spiritual realms as one progresses towards God. It covers a large gamut of seemingly unrelated topics covering: • Sexuality, • The birth process, • How life develops and is controlled by archangels, • What is God and what God’s Power is, • What our auras are, • How we can develop spirituality, • Diet, • Organising one’s daily routine and a host of other topics. The book cleverly weaves all these, apparently, disparate elements into a cohesive whole so that the student can have a firm grasp on the way that life operates whilst incarnate here on Earth and will help guide one through that life, and also what awaits someone when this incarnation is finished and they return to their true home, the spirit realms. There are also a couple of prayers that were dictated from the spirit world, some guided meditations and, lastly, a number of questions and answers that were asked of the Great White Brotherhood on a variety of topics. Although it is a book on spirituality, it offers a lot of practical information relevant to the problems that people face in their daily lives. The Brotherhood all had incarnations here on Earth at some stage and so have first hand knowledge of the difficulties that we face. It is not a remote, academic book just dealing with what is God. It is written in simple, if precise, language and all people will find that they can connect to the information presented in the various chapters. As a last point, a great deal of love was put in by the Great White Brotherhood to give us this book and a great deal of hard work was put in by various people to present this to you. It is hoped that the information will change your life.

Book Stairway to Heaven

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Levenda
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 2008-06-01
  • ISBN : 0826428509
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Stairway to Heaven written by Peter Levenda and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of heavenly ascent, while popularized in Jewish mysticism, is neither a unique nor recent one. Expertly tracing its origins back to the ancient Middle East, Levenda unearths ascent literature in Africa, India, and China, discerns a common connection in the heavens themselves, and determines that this connection has been sorely neglected in contemporary scholarship. Because scholars treat the "heavens" as metaphorical, it is necessary to recreate the physical context of the culture under discussion in order to better understand it. For the benefit of the reader, Levenda offers two useful concepts for his investigative journey: a "map," whereby he means the cosmological system to better understand the mystical technologies of each culture investigated, and a "vehicle," the method by which the individual equipped with special knowledge is able to navigate the culture's particular cosmology. With these two tools, Levenda travels from the worlds of ancient Egypt and Babylon to the Hebrew Bible, to Jewish and Christian kabbalists, to Daoists in ancient China, to Hindu Tantra and Haitian Vodoun, and, finally, to nineteenth and twentieth century European occult societies.

Book Wandering Begging Monks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Folger Caner
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2020-05-12
  • ISBN : 0520344561

Download or read book Wandering Begging Monks written by Daniel Folger Caner and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apostolic lifestyle characterized by total material renunciation, homelessness, and begging was practiced by monks throughout the Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries. Such monks often served as spiritual advisors to urban aristocrats whose patronage gave them considerable authority and independence from episcopal control. This book is the first comprehensive study of this type of Christian poverty and the challenge it posed for episcopal authority and the promotion of monasticism in late antiquity. Focusing on devotional practices, Daniel Caner draws together diverse testimony from Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, and elsewhere—including the Pseudo-Clementine Letters to Virgins, Augustine's On the Work of Monks, John Chrysostom's homilies, legal codes—to reveal gospel-inspired patterns of ascetic dependency and teaching from the third to the fifth centuries. Throughout, his point of departure is social and cultural history, especially the urban social history of the late Roman empire. He also introduces many charismatic individuals whose struggle to persist against church suppression of their chosen way of imitating Christ was fought with defiant conviction, and the book includes the first annotated English translation of the biography of Alexander Akoimetos (Alexander the Sleepless). Wandering, Begging Monks allows us to understand these fascinating figures of early Christianity in the full context of late Roman society.

Book Being Human and a Buddha Too

Download or read book Being Human and a Buddha Too written by Anne Klein and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing that sparkles and inspires, Anne Klein (Lama Rigzin Drolma) shows us how to liberate our buddha nature to be both human and a buddha too. This first volume in the House of Adzom series centers on Longchenpa’s seven trainings in bodhicitta, our awakened mind, the ultimate purpose of our practice and training. Anne Klein’s original composition masterfully weaves in Adzom Paylo Rinpoche’s commentary and Jigme Lingpa’s five pith practices and commentary on the trainings, in keeping with Longchenpa’s skillful integration of sutra, tantra, and Dzogchen, to resolve our most challenging questions about what awakening involves and how it relates to the truth of our human situation right now. As foundational teachings for Dzogchen practitioners, the seven trainings are framed as contemplations on impermanence, the adventitiousness of happiness and its short duration, the multiple causes of death, the meaninglessness of our worldly activities, reliance on the Buddha’s good qualities, the teacher’s pith instructions, and, ultimately, nonconceptual meditation on bliss and emptiness, clarity and emptiness, and reality itself.
