Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an edition of the six complete pageants which together form the major part of the Wakefield Group in the Towneley cycle. Although they were probably written by the same playwright and are certainly among the best pageants written for the religious stage in medieval England, they have not been edited before as a group. Two, Magnus Herodes and the Coliphizacio, have not been reprinted since 1897, except by the Early English Text Society in its reprints of the Towneley Plays which it first published in that year. Furthermore, every edition of a Towneley pageant published since 1897 has been based on the EETS text, without reference to the manuscript itself which is in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. The text of the edition presented here is newly transcribed from photographs of the manuscripts, and this transcription has resulted in several improved readings. This is the first book in the Series of Old and Middle English Texts under

Download or read book Stages and Playgoers written by Janet Hill and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stages and Playgoers demonstrates the long, vital tradition of dialogue between stage and audience from medieval, through Tudor, to Jacobean drama. Janet Hill offers new insights into techniques of addressing playgoers from the stage and how they might have operated under particular staging conditions. Hill calls this dialogue "open address," a term that takes in a range of speeches often called "asides," "monologues," and "soliloquies." She argues that open address is a strategy that challenges playgoers, asking for answers that lie outside the stage in the playgoer/playhouse world.

Download or read book The Practicalities of Early English Performance Manuscripts Records and Staging written by Peter Meredith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected Studies CS1069 The essays selected for this volume reflect Peter Meredith’s major contribution to the revival and revision of academic and public interest in medieval English drama and theatre. A number of coinciding factors in the last quarter of the twentieth century brought together a group of scholars, represented here in the Shifting Paradigms series, determined to place the study of medieval drama in a broader context than that of solely reading texts. The publication of Records of Early English Drama, the University of Leeds facsimiles of medieval drama manuscripts, the establishment of the journal and annual meetings of Medieval English Theatre, brought a wider perspective to the discipline. And, by no means least, the bringing to bear of all these ground-breaking developments to the mammoth tasks of recreating in the public domain the original-staging of medieval plays. Peter Meredith had a hand in the formation and lasting influence of all these crucial innovations. The variety and depth of his comprehensive approach to the study of medieval drama and theatre is clearly evinced in each of the essays chosen for this volume.

Download or read book Staging Scripture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a background which included revolutionary changes in religious belief, extensive enlargement of dramatic styles and the technological innovation of printing, this collection of essays about biblical drama offers innovative approaches to text and performance, while reviewing some well-established critical issues. The Bible in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries appears in a complex of roles in relation to the drama: as an authority and centre of belief, a place of controversy, an emotional experience and, at times, a weapon. This collection brings into focus the new biblical learning, including the re-editing of biblical texts, as well as classical influences, and it gives a unique view of the relationship between the Bible and the drama at a critical time for both. Contributors are: Stephanie Allen, David Bevington, Philip Butterworth, Sarah Carpenter, Philip Crispin, Clifford Davidson, Elisabeth Dutton, Garrett P. J. Epp, Bob Godfrey, Peter Happé, James McBain, Roberta Mullini, Katie Normington, Margaret Rogerson, Charlotte Steenbrugge, Greg Walker, and Diana Wyatt.
