Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spouse Stealer's crux investigates the social and psychological relevance of its characters as they intertwine their lives and circles of friends and associates. Set during the height of Buffalo's Baby-Boomer's interaction with the last of its blue-blooded, gilded-class monies, The Spouse Stealer introduces Jonathon Spector, a man living comfortably on the fringes of wealth, among very wealthy friends. His new "dating search" leads him through another gambit after his last divorce, and he engages in a series of debauchery. In his attempt to achieve a religiously felt "true love" again, he tries to qualify women for their true meaning, beyond mutually engaged sexual pleasures. Just as he finally settles down once more, a serial spouse stealer in the form of a filthy rich and intriguing woman emerges. Their country clubs, tennis courts, private beaches and sand dunes, and their yacht clubs accessible only to them accentuate their decadent life style and cross all borders. Jonathon's gatherings with friends become pointedly selective as the antagonist hosts everything at her Canadian beachfront estate. The dominance and self-serving attitude becomes clear as her veracity unfolds. Money, power, and deceit materialize into everyone's lives as a forced yet visible presence no one wants to see has become a reality, leaving an indelible mark on everyone. Marching an assemblage of unforgettable characters playing erratic twists and turns, The Spouse Stealer provides a candid and honest look into the world of lies, lust, and temptations in the eyes of God as it gives readers a taste of the supposedly sacred promise of marriage. Book Stealing Your Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank W. Abagnale
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2008-05-13
  • ISBN : 0767925874
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Stealing Your Life written by Frank W. Abagnale and published by Crown. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charismatic forger immortalized in Catch Me If You Can exposes the astonishing tactics of today’s identity theft criminals and offers powerful strategies to thwart them based on his second career as an acclaimed fraud-fighting consultant. When Frank Abagnale trains law enforcement officers around the country about identity theft, he asks officers for their names and addresses and nothing more. In a matter of hours he can obtain everything he would need to steal their lives: Social Security numbers, dates of birth, current salaries, checking account numbers, the names of everyone in their families, and more. This illustrates how easy it is for anyone from anywhere in the world to assume our identities and in a matter of hours devastate our lives in ways that can take years to recover from. Considering that a fresh victim is hit every four seconds, Stealing Your Life is the reference everyone needs by an unsurpassed authority on the latest identity theft schemes. Consider these sobering facts: • Six out of ten American companies and government agencies have already been hacked. • An estimated 80 percent of birth certificate requests are fulfilled through the mail for people using only a name and a return address. • Americans write 39 billion checks a year, and half of them never reconcile their bank statements. • A Social Security number costs $49 on the black market. A driver’s license goes for $90. A birth certificate will set you back $79. Abagnale offers dozens of concrete steps to transform anyone from an easy mark into a hard case that criminals are likely to bypass: • Don’t allow your kids to use the computer on which you do online banking and store financial records (children are apt to download games and attachments that host damaging viruses or attract spyware). • Beware of offers that appeal to greed or fear in exchange for personal data. • Monitor your credit report regularly and know if anyone’s been “knocking on your door.” • Read privacy statements carefully and choose to opt out of sharing information whenever possible. Brimming with anecdotes of creative criminality that are as entertaining as they are enlightening, Stealing Your Life is the practical way to shield yourself from one of today’s most nefarious and common crimes.

Book Stealing Obedience

  • ISBN : 1442662581
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Stealing Obedience written by Katherine O'Brien O'Keeffe and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-04-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of monastic life in Anglo-Saxon England depict individuals as responsible agents in the assumption and performance of religious identities. To modern eyes, however, many of the ‘choices’ they make would actually appear to be compulsory. Stealing Obedience explores how a Christian notion of agent action – where freedom incurs responsibility – was a component of identity in the last hundred years of Anglo-Saxon England, and investigates where agency (in the modern sense) might be sought in these narratives. Katherine O'Brien O'Keeffe looks at Benedictine monasticism through the writings of Ælfric, Anselm, Osbern of Canterbury, and Goscelin of Saint-Bertin, as well as liturgy, canon and civil law, chronicle, dialogue, and hagiography, to analyse the practice of obedience in the monastic context. Stealing Obedience brings a highly original approach to the study of Anglo-Saxon narratives of obedience in the adoption of religious identity.

Book Stealing Helen

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lowell Edmunds
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-04-28
  • ISBN : 0691202338
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Stealing Helen written by Lowell Edmunds and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a familiar story: a beautiful woman is abducted and her husband journeys to recover her. This story’s best-known incarnation is also a central Greek myth—the abduction of Helen that led to the Trojan War. Stealing Helen surveys a vast range of folktales and texts exhibiting the story pattern of the abducted beautiful wife and makes a detailed comparison with the Helen of Troy myth. Lowell Edmunds shows that certain Sanskrit, Welsh, and Old Irish texts suggest there was an Indo-European story of the abducted wife before the Helen myth of the Iliad became known. Investigating Helen’s status in ancient Greek sources, Edmunds argues that if Helen was just one trope of the abducted wife, the quest for Helen’s origin in Spartan cult can be abandoned, as can the quest for an Indo-European goddess who grew into the Helen myth. He explains that Helen was not a divine essence but a narrative figure that could replicate itself as needed, at various times or places in ancient Greece. Edmunds recovers some of these narrative Helens, such as those of the Pythagoreans and of Simon Magus, which then inspired the Helens of the Faust legend and Goethe. Stealing Helen offers a detailed critique of prevailing views behind the "real" Helen and presents an eye-opening exploration of the many sources for this international mythical and literary icon.

  • Author : Shauna Shanks
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2017-06-27
  • ISBN : 0310348463
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book A Fierce Love written by Shauna Shanks and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love is easy to give when you are getting it back. Are we still called to God’s plan of how to love when we are getting none in return? Shauna Shanks’s brave journey through obedience reveals the outcome of when we dare to follow God’s ludicrous outline for love as described in 1 Corinthians 13. Wrecked with news of her husband’s affair and his request for a divorce, Shauna finds herself urgently faced with a decision. Does she give up and divorce her husband and move on, or does she try to fight for her marriage? The former choice seems to contradict God’s plan for how to love, such as “love never gives up,” “love is patient,” and “love is kind.” Taking God at His word and assuming the love chapter was really meant to be followed literally word by word, she not only finds herself falling in love with her spouse again, but also falling in love with Jesus, which changes everything. First Corinthians 13 presents an audacious, illogical, and irrational context of how to love, meant to be applied to every marital context not just the fairytale marriage. If God’s instructions seem illogical and audacious, you might just expect the same kind of results in return! This book is not air-brushed. It was written in the midst of the author’s deepest trauma, and she purposefully did not edit out her mistakes and failures during that season. This book will resonate with women who do not feel like the picture-perfect Christian woman with the fairytale life and marriage. A Fierce Love is the story of a train wreck and reaching out to God not in the calm but in the chaos and finding hope for the future.

  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book Stealing Home written by Shannon Lee Fogg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1942 and 1944 the Germans sealed and completely emptied at least 38,000 Parisian apartments. The majority of the furnishings and other household items came from 'abandoned' Jewish apartments and were shipped to Germany. After the war, Holocaust survivors returned to Paris to discover their homes completely stripped of all personal possessions or occupied by new inhabitants. In 1945, the French provisional government established a Restitution Service to facilitate the return of goods to wartime looting victims. Though time-consuming, difficult, and often futile, thousands of people took part in these early restitution efforts. Stealing Home demonstrates that attempts to reclaim one's furnishings and personal possessions were key in efforts to rebuild Jewish political and social inclusion in the war's wake. Far from remaining silent, Jewish survivors sought recognition of their losses, played an active role in politics, and turned to both the government and each other for aid. Drawing on memoirs, oral histories, restitution claims, social workers' reports, newspapers, and government documents, Stealing Home provides a social history of the period that focuses on Jewish survivors' everyday lives during the lengthy process of restoring citizenship and property rights. It examines social rebirth through the prism of restitution and argues that the home was critical in shaping the postwar relationship between Jews and the state, and in the successes and failures associated with rebuilding Jewish lives in France after the Holocaust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony M. Amore and Tom Mashberg's Stealing Rembrandts is a spellbinding journey into the high-stakes world of art theft Today, art theft is one of the most profitable criminal enterprises in the world, exceeding $6 billion in losses to galleries and art collectors annually. And the masterpieces of Rembrandt van Rijn are some of the most frequently targeted. In Stealing Rembrandts, art security expert Anthony M. Amore and award-winning investigative reporter Tom Mashberg reveal the actors behind the major Rembrandt heists in the last century. Through thefts around the world - from Stockholm to Boston, Worcester to Ohio - the authors track daring entries and escapes from the world's most renowned museums. There are robbers who coolly walk off with multimillion dollar paintings; self-styled art experts who fall in love with the Dutch master and desire to own his art at all costs; and international criminal masterminds who don't hesitate to resort to violence. They also show how museums are thwarted in their ability to pursue the thieves - even going so far as to conduct investigations on their own, far away from the maddening crowd of police intervention, sparing no expense to save the priceless masterpieces. Stealing Rembrandts is an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind look at the black market of art theft, and how it compromises some of the greatest treasures the world has ever known.
