Book Treasures of the Spanish Main

Download or read book Treasures of the Spanish Main written by John Christopher Fine and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about the lust for gold and treasure," Fine writes. In the 1600s and 1700s, Spain dominated the oceans with its fleet of galleons. Coming to the New World, these ships filled their holds with gold and silver and treasures beyond imagining. The seaway between Spain and the New World was dubbed The Golden Highway. On their journeys back across the seas, many were wrecked on reefs or destroyed by hurricanes. The watery depths now hold their treasures. Today, treasure divers seek their fortunes by attempting--sometimes successfully, sometimes fatally--to retrieve these hordes of riches. In Treasures of the Spanish Main, readers relive each voyage of long ago as well as witness the modern wreck diver's efforts to extract their secrets. Included are: The 1622 fleet * The Concepcion * The Maravillas * The Shipwreck off Jupiter Beach * The San Jose * the 1715 Fleet * and the 1733 Fleet The voyages of centuries ago come alive with Fine's excellent historical detail. Readers will experience the wild storms and the results of unfortunate choices made by long-ago sailors. The eccentric treasure hunters of today, along with those of the past, create a mosaic of suspense and drama on the high seas. A must for everyone interested in pirates, treasure, sailing, history, or just plain fun.

Book Treasure of the Spanish Civil War

Download or read book Treasure of the Spanish Civil War written by Serge Pey and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate portrait of childhood during Spain's violent fascist regime, rendered in a surreal kaleidoscope of linked stories. Serge Pey's stories are lyrical, vivid vignettes of life during and directly following Spain's violent fascist regime of the thirties and forties. The collection is a defiant ode to the resilience of the human spirit, each story depicting a small act of human resistance: a man plants a fruit tree for each of his assassinated comrades; a professor hides a secret library of banned books in plain sight. Many of the stories are surreal, fable-like impressions from the perspective of children caught in the midst of the political violence. Pey's understated yet unusual prose renders a brutal landscape with childlike wonder. The Treasure of the Spanish Civil War and Other Tales is a strikingly original meditation on courage, survival, and hope in the face of oppression.

Book excerpt: Twentieth-century sleuthing methods are linked with the romance and mystery of the past in this true story of a treasure hunt that has yielded millions. Over 250 years ago a Spanish treasure armada was wrecked on the Florida reefs, and ten richly laden vessels were sunk. In time they were forgotten. In the l 940's Kip Wagner, then a Florida construction man, picked up the first clues to the location of the wrecked ships. They were scarce: occasional blackened silver coins discovered here and there along the beach. But Kip Wagner's imagination was fired, and with the help of his friend and physician, Dr. Kelso, he began the long research and search operations that are described in this engrossing book. They were joined by a small group of other men and formed the Real Eight Corporationappropriately named for the Spanish ocho reales, or piece of eight. Most of the team had other jobs, some of them at nearby Cape Kennedy, and could hunt treasure only in their spare time. But they persisted. The work was arduous, at times dangerous. There were setbacks, disappointments, grueling underwater ordeals. But in time the rewards were sensational -thousands of silver pieces of eight and golden doubloons, silver bars and bullion, gold ingots, gold rings and pendants, priceless Chinese porcelain, a gold necklace appraised by a museum at $50,000, three million dollars in treasure recovered so far by this band of hard-working, adventurous, persistent men.

Book Imaginary Cities of Gold

Download or read book Imaginary Cities of Gold written by Peter O. Koch and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish conquistadors attempted to conquer the New World nearly a century before the English colonists established a permanent settlement at Jamestown. This book examines the unsuccessful elements of Spain's attempt at expanding its empire in the Americas, focusing particularly on the misadventures of three conquistadors. Part One tells the story of Cabeza de Vaca who, along with three other survivors of the ill-fated Panfilo de Narvaez expedition to Florida, spent nearly eight years among the various tribes that wandered across Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico before finding his way back to civilization. Their tales of lands rich with earthly delights served as inspiration for two epic but failed expeditions that make up the second and third parts of the book: Francisco de Coronado's quest to find the golden cities of Cibola and Hernando de Soto's efforts to find the rich kingdoms of Florida.

Book A Fool s Gold

Download or read book A Fool s Gold written by William E. Merritt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a few months out of law school, Bill Merritt takes a job working for a slightly shady but charismatic lawyer named Thaddeus Silk. Only months later, Thaddeus drops dead of a heart attack, and Bill is left to pick up the pieces of his chaotic and poorly managed practice. Before he can even start to make sense of the mess that was Thaddeus's legal life, the police are knocking at his door, and Bill is being accused of fencing stolen treasure. Enter Abby Birdsong and Grady Jackson, two clients of Thaddeus's whose files are among the boxes and papers and bourbon bottles that litter his office. Drug charges had been brought against Abby for carrying two pounds of pot in her bag; and Grady seeks a permit from the state of Oregon to dig for treasure on a local beach. Bill takes on both of their cases, which, on the face of it, aren't related. When the two cases collide in ways that seem too fantastic to be true, Bill finds himself caught in the middle. How Thaddeus and Bill, Abby and Grady, assorted law enforcement officials and colorful hangers-on overlap and interconnect took Bill another nineteen years to puzzle out. The result is an intricate and original legal yarn with a cast of provincial misfits so peculiar and charming it reads like fiction.

Book Treasure of the Sangre de Cristos

Download or read book Treasure of the Sangre de Cristos written by Arthur Leon Campa and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of tales and traditions from the Southwest includes stories of lost mines stacked with bars of gold, mule loads of silver cached away in outlaw hoards, and fabulous Jesuit treasures buried when that order was expelled from New Spain. Some treasure locations would be rediscovered by chance or by an old map-and somehow always lost again. But not all these folk teasures are of material wealth. There is the story of a nun who loved a soldier and repented, and whose kneeling figure may still be seen as a mountain rock formation. There is the Hermit of Las Vegas, an actual person who, after traveling between Argentina and Quebec, settled in New Mexico, where he became the subject of affectionate legends.

Download or read book The Practical Book of Cobs written by Daniel Sedwick and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular book has been out of print since 1995 and unavailable for a number of years now, so this [fourth] edition should be a most welcome addition to the market! Greatly expanded from the previous edition (more than 100 pages longer!), this 20th Anniversary Edition contains a long new section on the shipwrecks that have yielded cobs over the years, complete with a foldout map and specified bibliographies for each wreck. Also, the assayer section incorporates the latest research information, with specimen photos of most of the assayers (not separated into a photo section as before). The values in the back, of course, have been updated. What has not changed, however, is the appeal to both beginners and advanced collectors alike, as well as dealers and jewelers who work with cobs. The Practical Book of Cobs offers readers a look at the following topics:Historical background / Elements of design / Market values / Extensive bibliography / Complete ID of mint marks, assayers, and period / How cobs were made and used / Treasure Fleets and other shipwrecks that produced cobs / How to buy and sell, and how to spot counterfeits.

Book In Search of Spanish Treasure

Download or read book In Search of Spanish Treasure written by Sydney Wignall and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search of Spanish Treasure includes the stories of the excavations of ships ranging from a second-century Roman ship off Sicily to a nineteenth-century steamer off the North Wales coast, but most of the expeditions described were in search of some of the most important and historic ships of the Elizabethan era. in 1968/9, one of the flagships of the Spanish Armada, the Santa Maria de la Rosa, was excavated, and in 1970 another flagship, the Gran Griffin, was the subject of an expedition off Fair Isle, Scotland. The conclusions drawn from these excavations have substantiated the author's hypothesis that the inability of the Armada to inflict hull damage on any of Queen Elizabeth's ships was due to the poor quality of Spanish cast-iron shot. He also casts doubt upon Drake's almost legendary reputation as a captain and leader of men, comparing him unfavourably with Sir John Hawkins and Sir Richard Grenville. The excavations have generally been preceded by research in archives at home and abroad, and the lively accounts of the ships and their career reflect the thorough scholarship that accompanies underwater archaeology at its best. This research is often necessary to locate the approximate position of the wreaks in the first place, but it is equally important in enabling divers to interpret and piece together what they find. The accounts of the expeditions convey their excitement and frustration: how a fortune in gold bars was covered by shifting sands between dives; how Sir Richard Grenville's famous ship, Revenge, eluded the expedition after six months of intensive diving and a number of false discoveries; and of the long search for Drake's coffin off Porto Bello, where he died of dysentery in 1596. -- Inside jacket flap.
