Dr. Matthew Cameron travels to New Zealand to investigate a remarkable archaeological discovery. As he follows a trail of clues scattered throughout the country, Matt is thrust into the role of student and learns about trust, love and deception. But can he succeed in revising a nation's history when the Government will stop at nothing to hide the truth? Five centuries earlier, Francisco de Hoces is lost in the Pacific Ocean after his ship is separated from the rest of his fleet. Fate shipwrecks the San Lesmes on beautiful and mysterious shores. Can he and his crew survive amongst the natives in this extraordinary land? The Spanish Helmet weaves together the stories of two men whose destinies are set to collide. When they do, the explosive aftermath will change New Zealand's history forever. Greg Scowen's debut novel is a plot-driven tale of a modern-day treasure hunt and a meticulously researched conspiracy thriller which carefully blends fact and fiction.

Book excerpt: The Royal Armory in Madrid, assembled at a time when the Spanish Crown was at the height of its international power, is the oldest and one of the finest and largest armories in the world, imbued with great historical, artistic, and symbolic significance. Armor drawn from the unsurpassed holdings of the Spanish Royal Armory is shown in this exhibition alongside portraits of rulers dressed in the same armor, painted by such masters as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Diego Velázquez, and Alonso Sánchez Coello. Several large and magnificent tapestries from the royal collection also depict the armor in use. Together, some 75 works illustrate the use of luxurious armor in projecting an image of royal power in Imperial Spain. The exhibition includes several full suits of armor, helmets, shields, and equestrian armor--worn in battle but more often in Renaissance parades, pageants, and jousting tournaments. The works of art on view date from the reigns of the Holy Roman Emperors Maximilian I of Austria (1508-1519) and Emperor Charles V (1519-1558), to those of his successors, King Philip II (1556-1598), King Philip III (1598-1621), and King Philip IV (1621-1665). This is the first time that the armor has been exhibited together with the portraits in which it is depicted.

Book The Archaeology of the Spanish Civil War

Download or read book The Archaeology of the Spanish Civil War written by Alfredo González-Ruibal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archaeology of the Spanish Civil War offers the first comprehensive account of the Spanish Civil War from an archaeological perspective, providing an alternative narrative on one of the most important conflicts of the twentieth century, widely seen as a prelude to the Second World War. Between 1936 and 1939, totalitarianism and democracy, fascism and revolution clashed in Spain, while the latest military technologies were being tested, including strategic bombing and combined arms warfare, and violence against civilians became widespread. Archaeology, however, complicates the picture as it brings forgotten actors into play: obsolete weapons, vernacular architecture, ancient structures (from Iron Age hillforts to sheepfolds), peasant traditions, and makeshift arms. By looking at these things, another story of the war unfolds, one that pays more attention to intimate experiences and anonymous individuals. Archaeology also helps to clarify battles, which were often chaotic and only partially documented, and to understand better the patterns of political violence, whose effects were literally buried for over 70 years. The narrative starts with the coup against the Second Spanish Republic on 18 July 1936, follows the massacres and battles that marked the path of the war, and ends in the early 1950s, when the last forced labor camps were closed and the anti-Francoist guerrillas suppressed. The book draws on 20 years of research to bring together perspectives from battlefield archaeology, archaeologies of internment, and forensics. It will be of interest to anybody interested in historical and contemporary archaeology, human rights violations, modern military history, and negative heritage.
