Book Soviet Relations With South East

Download or read book Soviet Relations With South East written by R.A. Longmire and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1989 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorbachev’s major speech at Vladivostok on 28 July 1986 signalled an increased awareness by the Soviet Union of the importance of the Asia-Pacific region. Subsequently there have been significant changes in Soviet foreign policy, paralleling the programme of wide-ranging internal reform and imparting a new look to the USSR’s international image. The aim of the present work is to chart the development of Soviet policy towards the region since the start of the Bolshevik regime, with whether there was any pattern or consistency in that policy. Concentration on Soviet activity in a particular part of the world might also serve to throw further light on the much discussed question whether Moscow’s policies have in the past been conceived in ideological terms (and therefore in some measure pre-determined) or whether they were truly ad hoc, ideology being used merely as justification.

Book A U S Foreign Policy for Asia

Download or read book A U S Foreign Policy for Asia written by Ramon Hawley Myers and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current U.S. foreign policy in Asia. During the past three years, U.S. policies of giving top priority to Western Europe, relying on China to counterbalance the Soviet Union in Asia, rearming Japan and transferring modern weapons and economic aid to such states as Pakistan have not effectively dealt with threats of conflict. The foreign policy proposed focuses on the economic and political value of those key noncommunist nations encircling eastern and southern Asia and also India. The contributors agree that America needs a foreign policy that can counter Soviet expansionism and make recommendations toward this goal.

Book Communism and Reform in East Asia RLE Modern East and South East Asia

Download or read book Communism and Reform in East Asia RLE Modern East and South East Asia written by David S. G. Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West no longer regards communism in East Asia as a threat. On the contrary, because the communist party states of East Asia appear to be undergoing a process of reform directed primarily at economic modernization, it is now regarded as a potential market. The West’s attitude is reinforced by the recognition of East Asia’s economic importance more generally – a perception which in itself undoubtedly stimulated reform in the region’s communist party states. The causes, extent and consequences of reform in the East Asian communist party states are the concerns of the contributions to this volume, first published in 1988. It includes chapters on the reform process in China, North Korea, Vietnam and Mongolia; as well as examinations of the roles played by both China and the Soviet Union in the Asia-Pacific region. They demonstrate that a belief in a simple, single process of economic and political liberalization – brought about by the drive for economic modernization, the production imperative – is a misleading argument. Although the production imperative might act as a stimulus to reform, it is neither a sufficient nor even a necessary condition. In individual countries the communist party’s search for legitimacy, a change of leadership, or the relationship with the USSR have equally been the spur to reform. The drive for economic modernization may even be a consequence of the communist party’s desire to reform rather than a cause. The absence of a uniform pattern does not detract from the potential consequences of economic and political change. These challenge socialist thinking on the nature of collective life, ownership and rural society.
